Yeah - dumb criticism Often food in the UK is bad. Overpriced and very unhealthy But London you have an amazing range of fantastic places. e.g. my fav Turkish restaurants outside of Istanbul are both in London. Ditto Vietnamese. I was only disappointed never to find an authentic Malaysian (much better in NZ) I can dream of that in Hamburg. Berlin has some decent stuff but nothing to rival london.
yep. When i lived there in the mid 00s i was always heading up kingsland road from old street. The Turkish up that way was to die for ...
I love a bit of pie/sausage and mash with gravy or a roast dinner Ethnic food is obviously more varied on the pallet but at winter time, nothing beats a roast covered in gravy
Meh the ethnic food isn't even that good. The Caribbean is pretty mediocre. I would have said the Turkish and such was good, but now I've been to Israel so in comparison it's pretty weak. Even Ozil's joint is only ok. Probably the best food I've had in London is the Thai, Peruvian, or Steakhouse.
Well we probably have to be more specific here 95% of Turkish places in London are shit - and almost 100% in Hamburg But in London you will find a few "to die for" places which change your life. My favourite was a very rough place - mainly frequented by cabbies and locals to Kingsland high road. But genuine ocakbaşı and the best I have had outside Istanbul But you know - also in Istanbul - many of the places are very ordinary.
Most celeb places are average and overpriced. The only one I frequent is Jamie's Italian airside at LGW or previously Ramsey's Plane food at LHR And that is literally because the options before were so terrible, and at least I can eat something tasty there.
All commercial centers are good places to get a steak, because a steak doesn't require the same authentic touch of magic that ethnic cuisine requires. It's all about getting the best ingredient, so as long as you can afford to buy good meat, it doesn't take much to turn it into good steak.
I went to this Malaysian place in Leicester square called Rasa Sayang last month. I thought it was really good, though other people may disagree. London also has some phenomenal Pakistani food. My favorite is Tayyab’s in whitechapel.
I have not been there but will check it out The best Malaysian i have ever had outside of Malaysia is in Wellington NZ. For some reason a cluster of restaurants developed and combined with excellent ingredients available the quality is superb. We also have superb "indian" for this reason - better than London IMO
Agreed - but in practice getting a decent steak in germany is quite difficult. Its one of the first things i order in the UK because i would never order it here
Maybe my palate isn't so fine-tuned since I've never been to the Middle East or Turkey itself, but I've had what I thought was really good Turkish food right in Islington. And look, I get it, Dishoom is a bit too trendy/hipster, but I love the mix of pretty decent Indian food and good cocktails.
In my experience it’s extremely difficult for middle eastern to be great: food has to be both the right temperature and the seasoning has to be perfect. Hard to do that. Pakistani food has much more margin for error, imo.
I didn't realize there was such a culinary conversation happing in the Newcastle thread, LOL!! Seriously though, my wife and I spent a week in Scotland in May and I was stunned by the number of really good meals we had across Oban, Edinburgh and St. Andrews. If we're talking UK, then don't sleep on Scotland. Haggis is delicious!
I’ve never been much of a curry fan, with the exception of nihari and haleem. Neither of which I can eat now bc health issues. Desi kabobs are legit. Afghan kabobs are even better though.
As I recall, quite a few "Indian" restaurants are actually Pakistani e.g my mates fav local was a typical suburban "indian" but actually my dudes were all from pakistan and there were quite a number of pakistani dishes But of course they had to offer the must have classics If you ordered anything spicy there the chef would come out for a detailed convo on whether you meant english "hot" or actually hot
The best kebab meat I have had is usually Pakistani ran places but in terms if sheesh meat on a stick, there is a Turkish resteraunt near where I lived in Birmingham which is amazing
Pakistani and mainly Bangladeshi English ‘curry’ houses generally make a British interpretation of a curry (balti/bhuna etc) I like a balti but love authentic asian food. There are loads of communities here to get authentic curry from. The main difference is thigh meat >> breast meat for me
Our local turkish kebap guy is actually Afghani - he has an amazing photo of his mum kneeling in the street selling dürüms somewhere back home
One of the best surprises of travelling in Malaysia was how amazing the indian food was - but nothing like England I agree the traditional curries are a bit boring
Just circling back to say that Steve Bruce PLAYED for Norwich for 3.5 seasons, directly before joining ManUre. I did not know this until just now, listening to a podcast. So @BIGHMW wasn't really off base with his reference after all. Credit where credit due.
After digging through Wikipedia of Norwich City managers, I was actually thinking of Alex Neil, who was Norwich's manager for two seasons, close but no cigar.
