They actually do pony up on the front line. They've just failed over and over again on their signings. Christian Colman was a big DP money move, and they grabbed him when some giants of South American football wanted him. He's on a huge salary. He's been a disaster, and then got hurt. Now he's playing in the USL for NOrth Texas.

They went out and signed "the Cobra" this past off-season, who was the leading scorer in the Polish league at the time. He's done squadoosh. Literally squadoosh.

I think everybody knows that if FCD signed a Chicharito, they'd be better on the field and sell a hell of a lot more tickets. That's not their "mission statement," though. They're not going to do it.

FCD has done a hell of a job developing midfielders from their academy. Have for a long time. And they're doing better developing defenders. But forwards and wingers aren't being produced yet that have been "difference makers." Ferreira looks like a good forward prospect and has had an impact this season. He's also versatile.

Ferreira's not going to be the starting #9 on an MLS-cup contending team, though.

Shrug. I see it as a lot of negotiating thru the media. The GM Zanotta has said some similar things. He knows how this game is played as he was previously the GM at Gremio and Santos. All of their comments can just be summed up by saying: "FCD has the player under contract for a couple more seasons. He's an important player for FCD, and if a club wants him...................they're going to have to pay a significant transfer fee."

We're not talking about the 1 million for Chris Richards here. Maybe not Alphonso Davies type of money (13.5 million), but certainly a significant pile of cash.

Zanotta has said they've received calls from clubs with "interest" in Pomykal. So he must be quoting a price. So far none of risen to the bait. Hence he can say "no offers have come in" and not be lying.

Carlos Gruezo will be an interesting data point for the clubs pursuing Pomykal. He struggled to start for Stuttgart at 20 and was taken up by FCD. After three years with FCD he was just recently sold to FC Augsburg. He plays a largely similar position to Pomykal.

More data points will be the other U20 standouts in MLS. No, not just the Americans. MLS has snapped up a good number of U20s from South America. Ezequiel Barco is the best known but they have also recently purchased Uruguayans Thomas Chacon and Brian Rodriguez as well as Ecuadorian Diego Palacios.

One of the challenges (from a USMNT perspective) is finding the sweet spot in value where it’s not only the “loan army” teams that will find it worth it to take an expensive flier on an unproven player.

Someone posted that many of the good developmental Dutch teams don’t usually pay large transfer fees. That shrinks the pool

I never thought of there being a "sweet spot" in relation to loan armies. (not disagreeing)

What would you consider to be a price tag (range) that would favor a team like Chelsea that is not really interested in the player for their team vs a team that is actually interested in the playing the player? Matt Miazga went for $5M (raise that for inflation now). Are you saying that if Pomykal went for approx $5M (adjust up for today's price), he would likely only have Chelsea type suitors but if the price were different (I assume lower?) that other teams might be interested?

I am sure that Miazga had other offers. I wonder what price range they were and what types of teams were in the bidding? I also wonder how that might have changed in today's market since it seems that US players are being looked at in a different light than they were previously. When Miazga went, Europe didn't have the same interest in Americans that they seem to have now.

Edit: Many teams (other than Chelsea) paid the around $5M, more than $5M and less $5M than (Miazga's price tag). If you do think there is a "sweet spot", what other factors do you think play into it (player's nationality, league of origin, age, perceived potential etc.)

I think that there is a price above which mid-level teams that play young players are looking for more of a “sure-thing” than a developmental player. I’m not sure what that number is but I’d guess somewhere between $5-10m starts to weed out a lot of buyers. Note: it’s not that these smaller teams won’t buy players at above this amount but they may be hesitant to do so from a rapidly evolving league like MLS.

I also think that the SC component is new now and I’m sure that MLS wants their share of sell-on fees. I would hope that some MLS teams would be willing to trade less cash upfront for a bigger percentage later (and vice versa from buying clubs) and that could lead to more transfer away from the “loan army” clubs who can drop $10m on unknown players.

We’ll see if all our domestic players get sold to big EPL teams vs. more developmental friendly ones.

Sorry for my ignorance. What is "SC component"?

One thing that will prevent many from going to EPL is work permit rules. Pomykal has not been at full national team and may or may not make it on appeal.

My terminology may be wrong but it’s solidarity comp, which allows team to get a percentage of future transfer fees.

Agree with the sell on model although so far only the destitute Bundesliga team Bayern Munich has done such a deal with Dallas. Also the loan armies may be a thing of the past. Both FIFA and Europe are instituting new rules about how many players can be on loan and I think it starts next year.

There are solidarity payments and training compensation. You used the initials from the first word of one and the second word of the other. :D

Yes, Pomykal is a Czech name.
Many Czechs and Germans settled in Texas. Last I knew there were roughly 200k Czech-Americans living in Texas...................the most of any state.
There's even a Praha, Texas. (aka Prague).

Almost all Texans know of West, Texas off of Interstate 35. Everybody stops at the Czech Stop and Little Czech Bakery there for Kolaches to break up the drive :)

For some time there's been speculation that Pax has the ability to get a Czech passport, but I've never seen confirmation of that from a reliable media type.

I thought most Czechs preferred the Mid-West like Iowa/Nebraska/Illinois/Minnesota.

Well he would be cap tied already from youth competitive appearances, correct? I ask from an academic perspective because there’s no risk of him switching regardless.

    He's provisionally cap-tied.

I simply brought up the possibility of a Czech passport as it would make a move to Europe easier.

I don't think we need to worry. It would kinda be like Pulisic's Croatian passport or Hyndman's Portuguese passport. Just a tool to get to Europe.

I thought that if he appears in a youth competitive match without a passport for another country he cannot ever do the one time switch?

Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think it has to do with whether you have a passport but rather whose passports you were eligible for when you first made an provisionally cad tying appearance.

So someone like, say, Julian Green. He appeared for German youth teams before switching I think. I don’t think he needed to have a US passport when he first played for German. But he was eligible to apply for one when he first played for Germany, so he would have been eligible to switch even without possessing one at the moment.

It seems to closely match up to when a guy is hyped higher than one of their guys.

The 343 guys have their way of teaching the game. Which is great.

I can't stomach their incessant diatribe that folks teaching the game in an alternative way to theirs..................are incompetent buffoons. That they alone know the keys to success for coaches and young players. That they alone are the experts in player and talent evaluation. There is such an unpleasant, off-putting arrogance about them.

You'd think 343 would be laying low after Brian Kleiban was fired in disgrace from the Galaxy. But I guess not.

@zlebmada 's theory that gregg is really pushing paxton to go up a level really rings true after listening to instead of just reading the extratime interview. he couldnt make it more abundantly clear that not all first teams are the same

One of my best coaches in N. Texas was a former Czech national team player. Guy was still a great athlete in his mid 60's. He smoked while he played at practice...diving to pick balls out of the top corner with a burning cigarette pinched between his lips!

Paxton has always reminded me a little bit of Pavel Nedved.
