Okay, several posters are wondering why Yank head coaches abroad are in the Academy subforum, and I have to say, I think they might be right. We could apply the same criteria for leagues in which players play to coaches. For example, David Wagner of Huddersfield should really be in the main YA forum, not the Academy, while academy coaches should remain in the YAA forum.

So I realize we never made it official but we’ve agreed that league games only count towards promotion - cups, club friendlies, etc do not.

Does that also include Champions League/Europa League types of competition?

Remember how Julian Green got a CL appearance without any league appearances? Jonathan Klinsmann started a Europa League match, but never had a 1st team league appearance. Zelalem appeared in a FA Cup & CL match with no league appearances.

Obviously, sometimes strong teams put out more junior lineups in the CL matches because they can and those players may never play for the first team otherwise.

Not trying to advocate one way or the other, but you gotta be clear when you set the rules or we will just argue over them until someone pokes an eye out.

The Club World Cup would be another important FIFA competition that could easily see more junior players taking part.

My preference would be to keep it simple: only league matches.

As always i appreciate all of your work but can i bring up again the topic of yanks abroad playing in mls or second division canada? The whole point if ya is, to me, they play abroad (in my narrow def means outside of north america) but it seems to me that mlsers should be put in the academy forum.

    Anyways thanks for your work!

Also agree that head coaches wagner, marsch, even enochs should be in main forum. A lot hard to ya coach then to play abroad...

If I understand your post, you're suggesting that a US player should be a YA if he's playing for Toronto or Vancouver, but he should be in YAA. No. It's still the domestic league.

As for coaches, the reason some posters brought up the idea of splitting the forum to begin with was that it was getting unwieldy: some threads in which they were interested were constantly being pushed to the lower pages. So we had to come up with a rationale for populating YAA that moved enough threads out of the main forum to address the problem that made people want the split to begin with. The coaches are in YAA not because anybody questions the value or interest of their work, but because we used the kinda-sorta thematic relationship of coaching as teaching to the idea of an academy. We also hoped it might make their threads easier to find.

First do obv. What is easiest for you mods.
My defenition of a yank abroad is if he is playing outside of nafta (i do not recognize mexican soccer, dos a cero ;).

If there are players who are either loaned out to mls or playing second division canada then they belong in yaa, by defenition they are not yanks abroad. imho.
Just look at the page lengths if keaton etc... Vs marsch. Marsch will be the first american to coach a champions league match. Imho, lol he needs to be supper dupper sticked in just out if respect for his performance. I am on my cell phone so i cant check how many pages he has compared to mls posters coming to ya and "inflating/trolling/mls contamination" ya pages.

    In any event thanks again.

Also ot but i will be a german (dfb) liscensed youth coach this year... So yeah go usa coaches ;)

Why can't there be a sub-forum for coaches? I don't know nothin' about no modding, but is that really so difficult? ;)

Well, things have been working pretty well with any first team competitive match leading to a promotion, so I would have kept that the way it was. There is such variety in the kinds of competitive matches and their quality that it seems like a good leveler to me. An FA Cup final is the same as a Mongolian Premier League match.

But if it's all about league appearances, then I would state specifically that ONLY league matches count and not Champions League, cup matches, super cups, Europa League, US-Mexico Leagues Cup and whatever other competitive matches might need listing. I would also ask whether that includes post-season playoffs like in Mexico or promotion/relegation matches.

What works best for us in "managing" the forums and threads as users is guidance and consistency. Tell us specifically what you want and moderate it with those rules in place. This thread should be the "laws" of the forum and we can discuss any interpretations needed (meaning it shouldn't be buried in individual threads but brought here for discussion).

There can be and I’m not sure the difficulty is the issue. It’s always been pretty niche - it’s not something we’ve considered partly because you can go stretches without an American coach abroad or maybe just one. Is this a fix that is needed? It’s a little weird to have them under Yanks Abroad in the first place if you ask me (even though it makes the most logical sense).

What if there was a third subforum for coaches and non top euro league players?
Eg ya/yaa/coaches and leagues outside of top five euro?

Why not just apply the same standards to club coaches (if you coach in the EPL, you're in the main forum, etc.) as players? International coaches would be a separate question, I guess.

A separate forum for all non-players (coaches, executives, etc.) might be interesting -- though it might be too quiet to be worthwhile. Or maybe its existence would attract more participation, I dunno.

That was partly the point of the name of the forum "Academy" as it also covers the coaching side. Given the niche interest and the low volume I think it's a brilliant forum as is - can't remember whose idea it was though.

I lost a recent YA forum vote so it's not just my call - but I personally am not super interested in coaches in the main forum.

What do other mods and users think?

I would be willing. I could also show you my "cyber cred". Yes uggggg... I won't talk about Freddy Adu ;)

Another topic just because I don't know where to address it:

Let me just say, that after my heart if darkness, into twitter that it is extremely clear that the yank based fans/management have no idea how europe works. I really say this with complete respect, but as an example Europe is completely shut down. Someone needs to be an ambassador to convey the current youth shutdown in Europe, ymmv. There should have been a youth plan 4 months ago!! All non first division players need to be !immediately! "invited" to a camp in Hawaii for 3-4 months(where ever). If anyone of institutional power is reading, please just make a call to a non 1. Liga player (at least in Germany).

@dark knight if interested let me know please.

Oh! obv the person who deserves the mod cred is @Dave Marino-Nachison

I think the reason why this issue keeps coming up is that calling this forum "Academy" is poor branding. The mods want to create a forum for the big players, and another forum for everything else, fine. But calling it "academy" strongly implies that it's for academy kids. But then we have Brenden Aaronson and Jesse Marsch in here? Given the branding of the forum, the rules will always seem very odd to a portion of readers.

I vote to revisit the idea of a YA Coaches & Managers forum. Seems like we might be hitting critical mass. And to me, managing Leipzig seems profoundly different from, say, playing on Leipzig’s U17 team.

My only concern with separating the forums for non-players is how much participation would there be? Look at Matarrazo's thread. There have been about 14 comments since the start of 2021 in what is likely the best American coaching performance in a top 5 league ever (certainly the best American born/bred).

That's the best reason for keeping top coaches out of YA forum... we just don't talk about them enough, even when they are in the thick of things.
