It does confirm that St Louis and Las Vegas are under consideration, which wasn't thought to be the case a few months ago.
Garber said back in March/April that the league was in exclusive negotiations for 28 & 29 with Sac & STL. St.Louis has been in then mix for some time now.
A couple months ago, St. Louis and Sac were given exclusive negotiating rights for 28 & 29 So either MLS we’re lying then or they are lying now.
Not to argue about MLS being liars, but nothing in that release contradicts STL & Sac having exclusive rights for 28 & 29. STL had their meeting on it. It went well. Sac has their meeting soon. In other news, Charlotte gave an update on their bid (on 30). And the above 3 and other bidders will be at all-star week-end. I think the big news (if there is any) is that Charlotte & Vegas got named & Phoenix, Raleigh, and everyone else did not. But they are not stopping at 30 anyway.
It is certainly giving the appearance that 28 & 29 are open to more than just SAC or STL. I’m sick of MLS putting city against city.
It is what they do to get concessions from cities on stadium deals (though Cincinnati did well for themselves and their school district in their deal, after getting burned badly on the Paul Brown Stadium for the Bengals). Cities that have been bitten on bad deals once (Cincy, DC, Miami) tend to be a lot more critical of "benefits" in stadium proposals and ask for more in return. Anyway, I viewed that as MLS trying to keep the pressure on Sac/STL to not backtrack this close to the end (28&29 still open!) & get gullible cities to go big (that Sac meeting has not happened yet!) for a near non-existent shot at #29. Also to let other bidders know that Charlotte & Vegas (notice he always names two to play them vs each other, never just one) are in the mix for 30. Which is the last spot (not), and could be decided any time! So step right up!
Of course it is. I am not agreeing with it. You think a Crew fan is going to be OK with unethical MLS practices? Yeesh. Is your brain even on? I am saying it is a transparent, oft repeated attempt to drive up demand/competition for two expansion slots that are already spoken for (28 & 29), and one that is not (30), in hopes they can generate enough viable bids to open up bidding for 31 & 32 ASAP. Hence, don't get your panties in a bunch about it. 28 & 29 are still spoken for. Garble always does this. They were going to pause at 16, 20, 24, and 28. Where have you been? I love soccer but MLS is a joke. They routinely change/make up rules to favor their pet cities (changing DP rules for the Galaxy most famously). And they interpret rules on the books to benefit those teams (no Ibra suspension for that elbow). Gotta cut home & home playoff games because congestion, but we always have room for a meaningless 16 team MLS/LigaMX tourney mid-season! It is a joke.
Then I’m not certain what you’re point is. They are few more vocal about MLS corruption than me. It has nothing to do with 28 & 29. I’ve been complaining about it for more than a decade now. This was just another example of MLS being obvious in their unethical business practices.
Posted in the Nashville thread. What are your guys thoughts about this story? Seems like bad news. Could delay Nashville's entry. https://tntribune.com/community/local/nashville/mls-soccer-draws-a-yellow-caution-card/
This is why we are seeing the league be a little more cautious as they announce teams. NYCFC still in Yankee Stadium, Miami ongoing stadium drama, Cincy switching designs at the last minute, now this in Nashville. I can see why they are wanting more and more assurances from STL & SAC. Also why a situation like CHAR is appealing, existing sportas ownership & stadium. SHORT NASHVILLE SIDETRACK: You'll get more, and better depth of discussion in the Nashville forums, but i don't see this delaying their start. They've already sold tickets, correct? I'd venture to guess they work out a deal with the Titans or Vandy to use one of those stadiums on a "TEMPORARY" (hopefully ) basis..... Now back to STL discussion Has anyone heard from MODOT lately on the proposed stadium sight??
Hell yeah As MLS board meeting continues in Orlando, multiple sources indicate that clear leader in expansion process is St. Louis. If no announcement today (it's possible), then likely soon. Garber scheduled to speak in 1-2 hours. pic.twitter.com/HIKh07gV5U— Brian Straus (@BrianStraus) July 31, 2019
Well, who knows. Although today's All-Star Game was expected to yield a major announcement, MLS commissioner Don Garber says the league has not made any decisions regarding its next expansion slots. #soccerbiz #sportsbiz https://t.co/sTOxHQWuvQ pic.twitter.com/t3IVxaRwQo— SoccerStadiumDigest (@thestadiumpitch) July 31, 2019
Sadly, I have to admit I simply don’t care anymore from a personal standpoint. I want it for the city, but I am so disheartened by MLS and the unethical antics of Garber, that the league itself doesn’t really interest me, personally. In April, MLS’s website stated, “With the announcement that MLS is expanding to 30 teams and seeking to announce clubs No. 28 and No. 29 by the 2019 All-Star Game”. They have about 5 hours remaining on this statement.
Dude, for one, you will be there opening kick and every game there after. St Louis is next. You know you care. For two, you knew damn good and well teams were not going to be announced at or on the all star break. It just doesn't happen. It will happen in a St Louis venue and you will be there. Sport Billy, you are the biggest St Louis supporter I "know" on these or any other boards. Keep the faith. MLS IS IMMINENT IN ST LOUIS!! Be ready.
BS. When St. Louis is in, you will be there. Awesome stadium in it's Awesome location with the teams Awesome owners. You owe it to yourself to be there, I love going to BBVA stadium and watching the Dynamo play against Vela, Ibrajimavic, Rooney, fricken FC Dallas, etc. Bet St Louis is announced before Thanksgiving.
You don’t understand. When there was first talk of St. Louis joining MLS, my kids were just born. Now, the oldest leaves for college next year. The idea of going to games with my kids is pretty much gone. Big difference between being 30 and 50 by the time they’d start playing.
Haha. Yeah he says the same thing each all star game. After 20 years, we shouldn’t be surprised. You wonder though if he is the guy who brought the league from where it was in 1999 or not. I guess he should get some credit.
