I believe Ashlyn Harris is the first player to publicly speak out against Hinkle. She tweeted this morning about Hinkle's interview that's now getting coverage by a bunch of conservative newspapers.

Harris references this tweet that was posted today that includes an interview by Hinkle:

Although there was little public statement about the actual cause of her exclusion it was clear to most anyone that looked at the whole progression of happenings that it was not really her religion but her intolerance for others that was the problem. Although she never said it exactly in public it was made quite clear that she believed that anyone that was not hetero or that supported the rights gay people to be treated as equals with everyone else was going to hell and that attitude was incompatible with the USWNT.

In fact I am quite surprised that she has retained her spot on her club team.

Being extremely religious is not a problem for most people associated with the gay rights movement BUT acting form that platform and refusing to wear indicators of support with simple human rights is a problem. She has an absolute right to her beliefs and she has an absolute right to state her beliefs publicly and she has an absolute right to refuse call-ups based on her religious beliefs BUT the USWNT also has an absolute right to remove her from consideration for roster spots if she refuses call-ups or places restrictions on call-ups.

It is her religious discrimination and stated hatred of gays that cost her the chance to play not any discriminatory practices by the USWNT.

In this day and age bigots like Hinkle have no place in sports.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Hinkle said that the WNT "is not a very welcoming place for Christians." I think the interviewer said that.

Also correct me if I'm wrong but aren't there a bunch of Christians on the current USWNT roster? You don't have them saying gays are going to hell or it's a sin for them to get married. Most Christians practice tolerance and it's the very select few that use Christianity as an excuse for their own bigoted views on the gay community. She's not only alienating the LGBTQ players but she's also making it awkward for Christian players like Tobin Heath and Allie Long.

So no, the USWNT doesn't exclude Christians on the team, just bigoted people. Can you imagine the awkwardness of Hinkle juxtaposed with Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger in the same locker room?

Let's try this again, in yet a different place: where is this statement of hatred?

There is a coordinated effort by some to diminish and "other" the team. Yes, most of the team is Christian. There are bible study groups and there are prayer circles before and after every game. Hinkle has made decisions. This moment is not about her or shoddy CBN reporting from a year or two ago. She is being made part of this moment to detract from the team. Ashlyn Harris and Krieger's brother have never been savvy enough to not take the bait.

I believe that most of the USWNT is Christian. Gay and Christian are not exclusive terms at all. It is only a subset of Christians that are bigoted enough to say that gays are not welcome in their community.

FWIW: I am pretty much an Atheist for the same reasons the Issac Asimov was one:

But, in spite of that, (Or maybe because of it) my best friend in a devout Christian. We often spend hours debating (arguing) about religion and I value that relationship a LOT. But he really believes that everyone has the right and duty to make up their own minds about religion and he believes that unsolicited proselytizing is actually anti-Christian and I agree.

The USWNT is about inclusion while people like Hinkle are about exclusion and themselves.

Why the hell can’t we simply field a team with the best soccer players in the country. Why can’t a coach step in and say, “I dont give a rats what you prefer, none of it has bearing on winning World Cups and Olympic medals. If you’re gay shut up. If you’re strait, shut your mouth and come in and play soccer. This kind of crap drives me nuts...on both sides!

This to me is on the coach. If we had a straight coach, I would expect them to make sure it was a welcoming environment for gay people (but all the focus on soccer). Same needs to be for Jill Ellis. Understand you have gays on your team, understand there are Christians (some of who are very “less willing to have an opened mind”) and she needs to manage it where THAT isn’t a focal point....... Yet, it CONSTANTLY is with this team.

And them getting into a little pack saying they have no tolerance for people like Hinkle...well guess what, it’s the exact same thing with the ignorant churches who say they welcome everyone...but if you show any outwardly “gay” tendencies, they kick you out. It’s all so hypocritical. JUST PLAY SOCCER AND SHUT UP!

Not wanting to wear rainbow stuff shouldn't be grounds for removal from the player pool. I agree her being pretty outspoken and having a fundamentally different world view probably would've made having her on the team pretty impossible. However the claims that she was homophobic seem pretty far fetched at least from the tweets and Instagram posts I've seen. And like I said just because a player doesn't wanna be a corporate shill shouldn't make them an outcast. I means even people who support the pride stuff are getting mad it's being exploited by financial institutions.

As for her team her team will have her back. They know her well and she's a part of the community. She just would never have really meshed with the women on the national team which is unfortunate.

"News" sources are just now re-publishing this story, nobody on the WNT brought this up.
So, I disagree, it's very important for players to speak up and to the truth out, finally.

The challenge was "statement of hatred". Saying "it's not my job" is not really...hate-filled.

I wouldn't call her outspoken. She originally asked to be left off the team for personal reasons and was not the one who leaked to the press why. This latest kerfuffle was about some preacher digging up the interview and claiming the USWNT was anti Christian. From what I have read, this preacher has never met Hinkle. I see a lot of projection on what Hinkle said and how she has been treated from both sides but nothing from Hinkle in some time. This is no longer a statement on tolerance it's an internet witch hunt.

    This is simply wrong.
The only reason she turned down her call up, when this whole issue started, is because she didn't want to wear the rainbow jersey.
If that was not a requirement of the team, during that specific time period, she would have been on the team.
I applaud her for standing up for what she believes, knowing full well what that could've cost her.
Too few people have the heart to do as much nowadays.

Refusing a call-up based on religious scruples because the uniform has rainbow colored numbers is NOT acceptable. It is saying "I'm better than everyone else on the team and my views are all that matters to me."

I believe that once a player shows that they think they are too good to wear the uniforms of the team they might refuse a call-up based on anything that offends them or even just inconveniences them. Coaches that allow players to pick and choose which call-ups they will accept are one of the kind of coaches that lose because they let the players run the team.

Hinkle chose to remove herself from consideration and never apologized for being so supercilious. So her exclusion from the USWNT is her fault. She made the choice to snub the team and now she is crying because the team no longer wants her.

And now she is complaining because her actions have consequences. If she can refuse for such a trivial reason she might refuse for anything. She told the coach and the team that she is better than the rest of them and that means she is unreliable and that should exclude her from consideration unless she takes action to fix the problem.

I don't believe any player should be forced to wear the pride jersey.
This is the beginning of the problem. Start there.

It wasn't Hinkle who posted the video and claimed the team was anti Christian. It was someone projecting what she said and Harris going after Hinkle.

The fact that she refused the call-up for what appears to many people a VERY minor reason makes her unreliable and that makes her a poor choice to try to build into a team. She might refuse for anything that she perceives to be a slight.

Once again it is NOT her beliefs that made the problem it is the refusal to play because of her beliefs that is. Actions like hers have consequences and she must face those.

My stance is both the extreme Christians and extreme gays need to get real. Both sides are absolutely ridiculous with their over the top stances.

However, in regards to Christians, most hold what the Bible says as the foundation to their lives. So if they believe that gays are not acceptable, per the Bible, why would they waiver on that when it comes to their careers? All I’m saying is to play devils advocate, I can’t necessarily blame the girl to hold steadfast to her convictions. And Gays, Non Gays, Trannies, whatever...should really accept that. And it again goes back to the coach should simply make things about soccer. She allows the back and forth behavior to happen.

The "snub" I mentioned had NOTHING to do with any video. It was about the act of refusing to play because of religious scruples. If anyone acts of their personal beliefs then they must face the results. Her exclusion from the team really has nothing to do with her religion but rather it has to with her actions.

Then she never should play on or against a team that has openly gay members. She can hold steadfast to her beliefs but she cannot expect her actions to be ignored.

She has the right to believe and act, within the law, however she chooses but that right also extend to the organizations she wants to deal with. If they cannot count on her to play when asked then it is their right to not ask her to play.

The coach has made it about soccer and basically said, "If I can't rely on you to play then I won't ask you to play."
