That would be Rachel Jones the 5'1" spark plug from Georgia. She spent most of her freshman season on the bench with a chronic leg or hip problem of some kind and got playing time sporadically. We are hoping that she will be healthy this fall.

Update on the new incarnation of Fetzer Field.

I took the opportunity today to stroll around the new digs for the UNC Soccer and Lacrosse teams. (Remember, the original press releases said that everything would be complete by August of 2018.) I have watched in anguish as the construction went nowhere for months at a time and the hallowed soccer field was a handy muddy staging ground for the new football facility next door.

Of the three projects slated to be finished in one year, the field hockey stadium was completed on schedule, the football practice building was a little late but finished up last fall, and the soccer/lacrosse field is just rounding into shape. The priorities are interesting. Clearly using Fetzer as a staging ground for a year was a conscious choice. (And even as the field was full of large pipes and other supplies, piles of stone, an assortment of trucks and construction machinery for a year, the office building languished for months at a time even after the roof and exterior walls were up. I don't buy the Athletic Director's statement that the delay was because of unexpectedly finding rocks and the wet weather made for the whole delay. It was a choice.)

I can report that the playing surface and the stands (including restrooms, concessions, press box, ticket box office, and scoreboard) are now all finished. In fact, the lacrosse teams are playing on the surface as clearly evidenced not only by field markings, but also by bare dirt spots where the goals are placed for games. The grass playing surface is billiard table flat and the grass is cut very short --not quite putting green length, but in the order of 3/4 to one inch. I didn't recognize the grass species it does not appear to be straight up Bermuda or Zoyzia, but I could be mistaken. (There are lots of choices of grass species including over seeding Bermuda with taller grasses.)

The seating is all reasonably comfortable individual soft plastic seats with fold up bottoms (good for draining away rain.) Seats are all numbered and this would allow ticket sales to reserved seats. IMO, the regulars will probably sit on the south side (above the benches) if for no other reason to be somewhat out of the glaring sun. The majority of the seating is where the old Fetzer bleachers were...In fact, the 1930s concrete is in good shape and has been preserved (and re-sealed) with the individual seating installed there on. It looks great. A couple of rows of what surely will be VIP seating is at the east end, and at least a half dozen areas have been reserved for disabled seating (seats and wheel chair spaces.)

The press box is huge with space for (each) team associated personnel, for general press, and the roof is set up for TV cameras. (My question is why no camera pads were reserved for corner/end line shots as is normal for big network games.) A nice touch is a big digital clock for time of day on the press box for all to see.

The concession stand is on the north east corner of the stands and looks to be at least 3x larger than the previous stand.

BUT, the facility is not yet finished. The office building (inc locker rooms, bathrooms, meeting rooms, etc.) is complete on the outside, but the interior is still being worked on. --No flooring and workers installing electrical cables for lighting, etc. Clearly the soccer staff is still in the cramped little McCaskill building on the north west corner.

The areas under the seating are also not finished. Under the south stands are areas full of boxes of supplies, construction machinery, tools, etc. Under the east stands there is active construction with wiring in full swing, various scaffolds, ladders, and a green cabinet full of dozens of blue prints . Also, there is more grading and touch up work to do around the exterior of the facility. One example is that area by the scoreboard which was supposed to be a patio for standing and socializing, which is now a poorly graded rocky area with scraggy (temporary) grass. Particularly poignant is the original 1935 plaque commemorating the Roosevelt administration's Works Projects Administration building of the stadium which forlornly is sitting on the north side of the stadium facing a brick wall a few feet away in a muddy area area yet to be finished or landscaped .

Sooo... we soccer fans may yet see the completed facility on August. It is coming along and should be great!

Well. It's time to wonder when UNC will announce its 2019 recruiting class. Back in the day (10 years ago and before) the incoming class would be announced in February just like most of the rest of the DI schools. But starting in 2010 the announcements seem to have been later and later and correlated with the number of players in the class. The largest UNC class ever was in 2013 and was not officially announced until July. But for the most part, recent classes have been announced in May and sometimes June, with the exception of last spring when the class of 5 recruits was announced on February 14. (I have also noticed that some other schools in the last few years are announcing later and later.)

UNC has a fairly large class coming in this year. 11 known recruits (most an easy drive from Chapel Hill along with a few out of state kids) will presumably be on the 2019 roster along with the rumor that a transfer will be coming out of West Virginia. Also, it would not be unusual to be surprised with a few walk-ons from across town.

So while I'm not holding my breath, I'm hoping for an announcement within a few weeks!

Well, Tarheel fans, the 2019 roster has been posted and I suspect that the official announcement of the 2019 class is being worked on for release soon.

Basically, we have known about this class for 2 years. The only change is the addition of two transfers. We learned about Lois Joel last month and now we see a second transfer, Cameron Keating. Joel may be a pleasant surprise but her record as West Virginia is confusing. Joel played for the English U17s, and is listed on the U19 roster, but has languished at West Virginia with only 400 minutes her freshman (2017) season and disappeared off the roster in her sopohmore year. Keating is from Greensboro where she played ODP and ECNL ball. At Penn she was sick for most of her freshman season with mono and saw action in only two games. In her sophomore season she also saw action in only two games. But, as always, one can never definitively predict who will surprise!

All of the other players we have known about are now officially on the roster. And so we await the fall to see who will stand out and significantly contribute to the Heels' efforts on the pitch. This year there are no names that are sure-fire starting prospects, so it becomes a situation where the drive and personality of the new players will determine who sees significant playing time. UNC fans (and the UNC coaching staff too, of course) are hoping that some of this class will blossom into reliable contributors, and while Hansen and Bell may have a leg up as there are nominally two defense slots up for grabs, it truly is wide open for this class as we see who stands out.

The English youth nationals seem to be consolidating :ROFLMAO:. Joel links up with Russo at UNC and Patten with her buddy Fisk at USCe.

keating's dad is the founder of "Captain Elite" that sells various soccer improvement services; He has also spoken at Dorrance summer soccer camps, so it's not as random a connection as you think. As an NC resident it also saves about 50K a year in tuition and fees vs Penn.

Thanks for this tidbit. And as you suggest it might explain how a previous relationship led to Cameron transferring to UNC and getting a spot on the roster. I will nonetheless be interested to see if she lands any significant playing time. I just don't know what it means that she only got into two games in her sophomore season at Penn. She could have been injured and be a good addition to the Heels when healthy.

This probably should be on a new thread but maybe a quick answer.... Quick comment on the US Soccer website. They seem to have change their whole format once again. I find it much harder to navigate and they are insisting on cookies before letting you on. For purposes of deciding on whether it's worth handing over my personal data to them, for those who have used it, does it still get you to archived stories about each age group?

    Thanks.

Jaedyn Shaw (2023) committed to UNC. Still way too early but Shaw looks to be a special player. She won the U15 girls concacaf tournament about a year ago, same team as Olivia Moultrie.

Highlights here from recent college summer league WPSL action with Oak City United defeating last season's Carolinas Division champion Carolina Rapids 3-0. Four players at or headed to UNC featured with Maggie Pierce (who started at UNC in January) turning and hitting a long ball off the post, Tori Hansen sending a corner to Lexi Strickland for the goal, Marzia Josephson with the featured save, and Pierce feeding Hansen for the final goal.

Unc is going to win the championship this year. I predicted it on this forum last year and they came close . This year they will win, just like a few years ago, when unc men’s basketball lost a close ncaa final, then won the next year.yes Julia Ashley is a rare player who will be hard to replace but consider they played the entire playoffs without arguably their best player who will be back this year.

I know this is looking back, but I've watched FSU and UNC in all three matchups a lot. In doing this, I just fell in love with Julia Ashley and her game.
She is such a warrior. Somehow, she managed to fight tooth and nail in such a way that it caused this opposing fan to love her game.
She's a fighter, and the type of player/person you want in your foxhole.
I can tell you that if she makes the USWNT in the future, she will have a huge fan in me!
I ALMOST feel bad that I won't get to see her when we meet this year.
Huge respect. Go Heels and Noles!

    JULIA ASHLEY LEAVES LFC
NewsMay 22, 201917:00 Written by Linköpings FC

The American slope came into the LFC during the start of the season and got a lot of playing time during the cup and training matches, but after that, injuries and an increasing competition have made Ashley have considerably less play time. This means that the LFC now activates the clause that enables the parties to break the agreement with the summer break. Manager Olof Unogård says this about the decision:

    - Julia is super professional and easy to work with. She has teamed up very well with other players in the team but has had difficulty adjusting to our way of playing fully. That, along with the fact that an old knee injury starts to remind, has led to this decision.

Julia herself about her time at the club:

    - I want to thank my teammates and the Linkoping community for all their help during my time at the club. I learned a great deal and loved Sweden, but I wish I was not limited to my injuries. Thank you and good luck.

We thank Julia for her time at the club and wish her great luck in the future.

Announcement today that long time assistant coach Bill Palladino is stepping down at this time, He served for 39 years as Anson's assistant with the Women's team in addition to 3 years as an assistant coach on the UNC men's team. The article announcing his retirement has wonderful praise from Mia Hamm and Anson Dorrance

    https://goheels.com/news/2019/8/7/w...-steps-down-as-assistant-coach.aspx?path=wsoc

He will continue to be an assistant coach with the Carolina Courage NWSL professional team, a role he has served for the past two years on a volunteer basis focusing on defense..

A more complete bio shows Palladilo as also having been a head coach in the W league with two titles, two years as chief assistant with the USWNT, and was named the the national assistant coach of the year. His specialty has been planning and coaching defenses.

i think this is gonna start being the trend. Even more so now with brands and sponsors and pro teams looking to cash in on US women's soccer dominance by locking up potential future super stars ahead of the competition. But then again, her goals might be different. Olivia Moultrie always expressed the desire to go pro and was already generating crazy hype. That's not the case for Jaedyn Shaw, who's just as good imo. Hard to say no when nike comes knocking and i wouldn't blame anyone for signing on the dotted lines.

The single official pre-season scrimmage for the Heels happened this morning. The score line was a 2-2 draw with the Olympique Lyonnais Féminin team reserves (mostly).

I went to the scrimmage as a first chance to gauge the new players on he team. It's one thing to be reading about them for the past 4 years or so, but it is another to actually see them play in the context of the college game.

Where to start.... Start first with no announcements at a scrimmage and then the frustration of not wearing any numbers making identification of new players very difficult. Suffice it to say that from a distance Isabel Cox and Rachel Dowart might be the same person (and only after the match did I find out that Dowart is injured and did not play), and Morgan Goff when standing next to Lotte and looked to be the same size. (Has Morgan grown two inches over the summer?)

So with a caveat of being prepared to eat crow over mis-identifications, here is what I saw.

Aleigh Gabone (right side forward) started and looked pretty good. The other frosh on the field for UNC was center back Maycee Bell who comported herself well quite well against the professionals. The remainder of the starting lineup was familiar with no surprises in what appeared to be a 4-3-3.

Dickey started in goal with Marz Josephson taking the second half. Dickey did not have her best game, and Josephson played extremely well under intense pressure stopping two breakaway goals at close range. The quality of these two keepers is such that I an see Anson platooning them well into the season to see who rises to the top.

The back line of Fox, Bell, Wubben-Moy, and Goff looked good. Barring any serious injuries, I suspect that this will be the settled defense for 2019, unless Brooke Bingham recovers ahead of schedule from her ACL tear of last February. My surprise was that Fox was deployed on the right side and Goff on the left. Goff did very well looking to contain the explosive Dutch international van de Sanden.

The midfield started out with Otto, Pinto, and Andrzejewski and the front line was
Gabone, Russo, and Jones. Midway through the first half, Shultz replaced Jones, Andrzejewski went to right forward, and Russo to left half.

Scoring wise, Lyon tallied about 5 minutes in with a running low cross from van de Sanden to a perfectly timed runner one touching at short range past Dickey. About three minutes later a floating ball deep into the box caused confusion with Dickey who semi punched the ball into the path of a Lyon forward for the second goal. About ten minutes later a missed clearance in front of the Lyon goal resulted Jones tapping the ball to Gabone for a close in score. Just before half time, came a spectacular goal from Pinto. Fox intercepted a pass in the back field and brought it forward and passed to Pinto at midfield. Pinto moved it forward looking for a runner, but decided to keep if for herself and blew by two defenders to rifle her shot from just outside the 18 on the right to the left upper 90.

Lots of substitutes in the second half with seemingly the whole UNC bench getting some PT and with the starting lineup back in for the last ten minutes. Here is where I will simply have to admit defeat as to what players I was looking at. I did recognize Lois Joel who I thought played well, and Isabel Cox playing forward.

As I have observed before, a college team playing a good pro team is a lesson on what can be learned and honed when one takes the best players and gives then an extra 5 (or more) years to practice. What is obvious when watching this disparity is that dynamic and quick one touch passing compares favorably with two or three touch passing, as does instantly defending well in the midfield shutting off the passing lanes and challenging the ball. Yup, seen it before, but am always pleased at how well the Heels do when all is said and done.

Pleased to see Branski at the game. He will undoubtedly have many and much more insightful comments.

Hello everybody, we're back! Fantastic morning of soccer at the UNC vs Lyon scrimmage. There was so much I could talk about in a post but unfortunately I've been dealing with an internet outage & havn't had the chance to write a blurb about it until now.

The Lyon scrimmage really was an amazing expierence. All the big Lyon stars were there even if they didn't play. It was cool to stand at the fence and watch Renard, Hegerberg, Le Sommer, Henry ... all these huge names ... running around the field, passing you just a few feet away. It was absolutely mind blowing at halftime... the entire Lyon team came over to where we were sitting to seek shade (they're human after all). They had their "halftime" meeting up against the same fence that the fans were leaning on. I saw some fans nod and step back to the let the players lean on the fence instead. It was an incredibly surreal moment to be so close to so many huge names and faces, and everybody was so cool and casual about it. We were all united in our desire to seek shelter from the sun in that moment.

I'll quickly touch on some of the things that Mr. Hunter already covered about the scrimmage vs Lyon, however I also want to note a few things about the "blue white" scrimmage last week that I was also able to go to and watch. I got lucky as it's not something that's typically advertised for people to go to. Just happened to see a player post about it on social media. Here's the teams that played against each other.

1158877671058808832 is not a valid tweet id

Sorry about that chicken scratch... these were the teams that were announced by the PA. I couldn't confirm them because I had nothing to work with to do so.

It was 4 ten minute periods with no subs... I have no idea why. I can't give a lot of insight about the scrimmage or the white team as I hadn't done my pre season player research yet. I was unable to discern who any of the new players were.

Hallie Klanke (if that was her) was the big take away from the inter-squad scrimmage. She looked really good, ending up with an assist to Dorwart and a goal from a power cross that was mishandled by Josephson and ended up being an own goal. She had way fewer minutes and far less action vs Lyon.

Where I was sitting at the intersquad scrimmage I never really got a good look at Klanke like I did with some of the newer faces. Embaressingly, all through the scrimmage vs Lyon I insisted to Hunter and myself that the player I was seeing in front of me was Alexis Strickland when it was, in fact, Hallie Klanke. I still wonder to this day if the player I saw for the Blue team was actually Aleigh Gambone, but there was a PA who announced the teams at the intersquad scrimmage and there was no mistaken who the other players on the Blue team were. Maycee Bell is unmistakebly *tall* (and a CB to boot) and you cannot mistake her with one of the other rookies.

Marz Josephson was a revelation in the Blue White scrimmage and she continued that form vs Lyon. Facing the Blue team was a different challenge for her than facing Lyon. There was a different kind of skill gap between the Blue and White teams as there was between UNC and the Lyon "reserves". One was about quantity, the other was about quality. While the Blue team came at her in waves and scored four, Lyon put together a few extreamly high quality chances that forced some rather spectacular saves. A pair of break away saves off her line vs Shanice van de Sanden, and a spectacular diving save on a well positioned FK just outside the 18 (taken by Kumagai, if I remember correctly). It's still a bit early and we'll see some platooning between Josephson and Dickey, but I can't help but think Marz has become the favorite to start.

So far the player of the game for both the Blue White scrimmage and the Lyon scrimmage was Brianna Pinto. She looks strong, she looks smart, she looks lethal. She scored in both games and her equalizer vs Lyon was something spectacular: a turn and run at the Lyon defense that gave her too much time to shift to her shooting foot just outside the 18 with a step over move. You can see it here as well as a few other highlights in this "flavor" post by UNC's account on twitter.

With Dorwart injured, Andrzejewski played in midfield, but I don't think this will be something Anson continues with. She moved around a lot and we had trouble identifying what position she was playing. At one point, without realizing who was supposed to be playing where, I commented to Hunter that it looked like UNC had a forward line with four players.

The one big moment of concern for me was Lyon's second goal. Dickey and Wubben-Moy have played together several times already, so I was a bit flabbergasted at the complete lack of communication that lead to the flub. The ball was partially cleared straight up in the air, and Dickey had plenty of time to come out and catch it easily. She failed to call off Wubben-Moy, who also failed to say anything. This was not a bang bang thing and should have been avoided. Both players ended up in a heap on the ground and the ball squirted straight to a Lyon player. It was not a pretty sight.

The first Lyon goal was just Majri doing Majri things and destroying poor Goff on the flank for an blistering endline cross to Van de Sanden. Easy tap in.

The subs of Pierce, Cox, Klanke, Dorsey, Joel, and Strickland played for maybe 15 minutes in the second half vs Lyon. Mucherera and Schultz had their own little rotation that started in the first half. There was also a moment where a new player was suddenly and without warning at right back, and neither Hunter or I had noticed Emily Fox left the field. As was mentioned, there was no PA and the players were not wearing numbers. I suspect it was Dorsey just moving from the left to right, but I couldn't be sure. It would not surprise me if I missed another player being on the field.

Big takeaways from both scrimmages, for me:

Goff, Fox, Wubben-Moy, and Freshman Maycee Bell look set to be the starting defense unless something happens between now and Thursday. Maycee Bell had a moment in the Lyon scrimmage where she fought off a big name star with some good footwork and strength, and she really needed to ... would have been in a really bad place to turn the ball over. Excited to see her meld with Wubben-Moy.

Brianna Pinto, Alessia Russo, Taylor Otto, and Emily Fox ... they are simply a cut above the rest, even this early in the season. Phenominal players to watch and they gave the Lyon reserves fits going forward. Happy and exciting to see Russo is not only back but looks faster and sharper than before.

    Marz Josephson.

Probably a lot more I wanted to write but I'm forgetting, it's late and I'm spent... instead of trying to remember everything it would be better for me if anybody had specific questions.

Not sure if it's the kind of question you were looking for (I am not specifically an UNC fan) but I would be interested in knowing which line-up OL displayed exactly as their "reserves" team: this could give some indication on the players who are considered starters or not for the upcoming OL's season.

I seem to get that the so-called "reserves" were including players like Van de Sanden, Kumagai and Majri, who would be considered lock-in starters in any other team on earth, including their respective National Teams.
