Well, many of the players of previous decades did: Jennings to Gabarra, Biefeld to Fawcett, Werden to Overbeck, Reddick to Whitehill. Pearce stuck with her maiden name, for soccer purposes anyway, for about 3 or 4 years after marriage before making the switch on her jersey. She switched back to Pearce after her divorce. Akers went to Akers-Stahl while married, and then went back to her maiden name. For those that got married during their playing career, I can only think of a few of the early players who didn't change their names: Foudy, Chastain, and Hamm. Also Mitts, I think (She did get married during her career, didn't she?). O'Reilly and Rodriguez also kept their maiden names for soccer purposes, but I think I remember them saying that they changed their names legally. There surely are a few more.

In any case, do what you want, I say.

As an IT-person at a company with 90% women so am I.
I still can't come over the fact that one of the girls married on of the few male at the company they both changed name, and caused me twice as much work.

Loved that! Continuous selfies, and gracious by Rapinoe, especially when you may not be feeling your best.
Speaking of hangovers, where was the champagne after the Final was done and dusted? (And in France, no less.) For me, winning celebrations aren't the same without spraying magnums.
Also, for shame, Allie Long, for dropping our flag on the ground. Kudos to Kelly O'Hara for snatching it up as quickly as she could. Pet peeve - the flag is being disrespected in winning sport celebrations. Yes, wave it around, show it proudly, but don't wear it. Our flag is not clothing. Salute it, die for it, don't wear it.

You must have missed all the pictures from the locker room. There was plenty of champagne (and goggles to prevent it from getting in anyone's eyes).

The first game Cat went by Whitehill, I distinctly remember thinking - "Who is this Whitehill? She looks awesome - bet she'd be great paired with Reddick!" And then I saw a closeup and realized we didn't have a clone, and was sad.

It's always amazed me how American women, the most fiercely independent women in the whole world, still want to change their names to their husbands' after marriage. Lots of women from other countries don't do that.

On a related matter, am I the only one who was surprised by the fact that Christie Pearce seemed to be going by Christie Rampone again on Fox during this WWC?

When Horan lost her mark in the French match that pretty much seemed to put a nail in her starting spot coffin.

Japan was a disappointment. Had North Korea been allowed to compete they could have stirred things up.

It's not Horan's fault, but Mewis put Renard onside.

Japan wasn't impressive in the group stage, but they played really well in the match against the Dutch.

Can i just give a shout out to jill Ellis and how she manages this team. She seems to treat the players as independant adult women without the need to impose the overly patronizing managment of the past. In the past Pinoe would have been shut down by leadership. It is a positive sign that they allow the players to be the independant women that they are. So long as they are showing up to put in the work, and nothing they say is profane; they should be allowed to be their own person.

I think you're being too tough on Rapinoe. Imo, she was nursing a hammy, which accounts for her inactivity yesterday (aside regarding inactivity: her distance covered when she was subbed off was by far the least of any player I saw in the tournament, just referring to the numbers displayed when players are subbed off).
It would be interesting to look at her distance covered numbers for the matches through the tournament.

She logged a lot of minutes for a 34 year old player. Not surprising that she was done by the end of the tournament.

I could definitely see Rapinoe accepting a sub role. Maybe I'm wrong. But, ya, we need to develop a new free kick/penalty kick specialist. And, plan on Pino being a rotational player in long tournaments.

Basically, all questions are about the Olympics now, right?

Th only explanation for all that, that I can think of, is that Ellis drilled into them at that point to keep possession no matter what. Seriously, it was like some AYSO games I've seen where the score was lopsided, a team was told not to score, they'd get a breakaway and then pass the ball back.

Pino is untouchable because of her politics. Got it.

I disagree on the last one. In this last match, when she was done - yes. But, prior to that, I thought she worked hard on defense. As I said upthread, I'd like to see her distance covered in the tournament.

North Korea was allowed to compete. They were eliminated in qualifying, losing their first-round group to South Korea on goal difference in April 2017.

I'll have to re-watch (watched it in a bar), but I thought Mewis had a very good game. In a way, her physicalility allowed Rose to do her thing. Another thing about Sam, I always knew she was good on the dribble, but her speed on the dribble was more and more impressive as the tournament went on.

I think Tobin kind of got sussed out during the tournament (I'm a huge Heath fan). By the end, teams were forcing her left - not letting her to to the right, no matter what. Like, she's going to pull all kind of awesome moves, but in the end, she's going right. Just sit on her right foot, no matter what.

She can create danger when going left, but nothing like when she's going right.

You've gotta be kidding. Rapinoe was unofficially blackballed for almost a year after she did her kneeling for the national anthem after the Olympics in 2016.

It looked like Rapinoe's career with the National Team was over. But, after the U.S. had some bad games, they discovered that she was needed and she was "recalled to life." (Thanks to Charles Dickens for that quote.)

She's been good ever since -- and now we even see her with a captains's armband.
So, now, having emerged from the wilderness and having been judged by non-prejudiced observers to be the best player at the World Cup, she is in fact riding high.

And you may be assured that Pinoe will continue to speak out on social issues. More power to her! She backs up her mouth with performance.

The money from those friendlies supports the NWSL. They're going to make wayyyyyyy more money from the victory tour than if they leave those players to their squads. Just the way it is.
