Interesting article I found posted by @BarryfromEastenders in another thread: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/01/sports/uswnt-england-world-cup.html
The cvnt Derksen, a misogynistic women soccer denigrading soccershow host for Veronica, has something from his dunn heap to throw towards the Orange Lionesses. People should just zapp away from this station when this shithead is on the show.
Rory Smith is a top notch correspondent. I think Europe will overtake the US within the next 4-6 years as a number of countries will be equal to or superior. The reason is simple, the growing club interest in women's football will dwarf what goes on in the US where the league really struggles. England have a number of good women's teams and Atheltico Madrid and Barca are very good along with Lyon, Wolfsburg and Bayern. The Scandanavian club situation has been good but I suspect their winters will direct more players south in Europe.
To be honest I think an European Superleague for the women teams is more desirable than for the men, as even in the top countries women football the leagues are extremely lopsided and viable clubs are scarce to find. In this case there's no vested billion interest in national competitions that get in the way of a superleague, so it's far more easy to realise.
Yes, I agree with this also. Not every big Euro team sponsors a women's team and I'm not sure how the funding of the women's teams works.
Good question. I know that Alex Morgan the US #9 did play at Lyon for one season but left for the US and plays for Orlando now. I'm not sure about whether others have made the move.
I just checked, all the USWMNT play in the US: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_women's_national_soccer_team They make roughly the same money as the top Euro players make, so I guess until the league folds there's no reason for them to play in Europe. Lieke salary is 100,000 Euro: https://www.1limburg.nl/lieke-martens-grootverdiener-bij-fc-barcelona Rapinoe makes $168,000 USD: https://playerswiki.com/megan-rapinoe
@Brilliant Dutch - it's a little more complicated. The women's soccer league has a very small salary cap and players like Rapinoe are paid by the US Soccer Association - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Women's_Soccer_League Martens's salary is from FC Barcelona. I think Lyon have the highest payroll of club teams. Also the US league play in a number of very small stadiums and don't get much television money.
Europe may be on par with US but not necessarily overtake. Look at all the QF teams and winners you can see that USA and top European teams are still far ahead than the rest of the world (except for Japan and Canada who are close). US have very strong universities women football programs and provide good player pool to USA and Canada. Of course US have an up and down cycle where Germany rose but US women will be there for a long time.
...and the second half one of the worst. I think both teams were gassed at the 70 minute mark and the passing was so poor. The US broadcast team were saying how incredible the PK save was. Come on now, this was a weak scuffed kick that any keeper who laces up the boots should be able to save. One of the lamest kicks I've seen with a match on the line. VAR got the offsides just right on the cancelled out English goal. US women are clearly the fittest team in tournament though it looks like they now have some injuries to deal with.
Which is where Holland are gonna beat the US at (as soon as we dispose of Sweden). BTW Orange14, when it comes to a US-NL final, who's your favourite team??
