    Hey everyone,

So, we are finally here! Women's World Cup is beginning already this weekend so thought I would get our group game threads started up. Let's be critical, let's have analysis, but more importantly, let's root for our team to get back-to-back like the Germans did in 2003 and 2007. Here...we...gooooooooo!

Another reason why I have this group match thread up crazy early...... hopefully this discussion doesn't jinx the team or anything but assuming they actually get wins against Thailand and Chile, do they let off the gas and let this game play out without gunning for a victory or do they keep fighting hard to absolutely get that last W?

If they play for a tie or a loss and get second place, would that be considered good strategy or does that bring about cosmic, supernatural or bad juju rumblings that get the USWNT knocked out early on?

I will post here quietly so as not to give offense, as apparently I did when I quoted Hope Solo in every post recently.

We have to evaluate each game one by one, but also in the context of trying to win the tournament as a whole. I expect us to beat Thailand and Chile, but I hope we don't try to destroy them in an unsportsmanlike quest for excessive goal difference.

If we meet Sweden with a draw favoring Sweden in the standings, I'm fine with that. Let's get as many of our players as possible into a positive flow in the first three group games, then take the KO rounds one at a time, with confidence.

Ya don't wanna lose or draw and then have them win enough in the knockout rounds that you have to play them again when rhey're feeling confident...

The World Cup starts here. Not sure Sweden is that big a test; more like a demon that has to exercised. I don't think the USWNT will even play a competent team until they play France in the quarters.

The big questions for me in this game are:

    1. Is Naeher going to make a howler?
    2. Is Mewis going to start over Horan or Lavelle?
    3. Is Mewis going to start and Brunn sits for Ertz?

My excitement level is somewhat mitigated by the "feeling" that we may not go all out in his match. While I am sure, at least pretty sure, that the players in the game will play their hardest to win it is quite possible that the coaching staff might think that if they put out a weakened lineup they can get an easier route into the semis and finals.

If they win or tie they play probably, assuming they keep winning, Spain and then France. While if they lose it is probably Canada/Netherlands (my guess is Canada) followed by probably Germany. Clearly the second option seems easier.

I do not believe that we should play a weak lineup at all but my confidence that the coaching staff will really realize what a loss could do to the team is not great. So I have concerns that our best lineup, in the coaches opinion, will not be played Thursday.

I hope we play our best no matter the result but I fear that will not happen.

OTOH I'd rather play Spain than Netherlands or Canada-- Netherlands because they are good, Canada because they're probably not real interested in being bounced out of yet another tournament by the US, and are capable of making a bloodbath of it. And the closer that France gets to winning the WC at home, the harder it will get to beat them. I'd rather play them as early as possible, myself.

It is the World Cup-- the only ways to avoid someone are to:
    1. Lose
    or
    2. Play someone who beat the team you wish to avoid

As I said in the other thread the U.S. consciously postponing a showdown with the host country in this World Cup would be the definition of insanity. Hoping that another team does the dirty work and knocks France out is not the mentality of a team that deserves to keep its title. Never mind the proven momentum-breaking power of a loss [or even a draw, in some cases] at the end of the group stage, even if such a result is partially contrived. Gaming a result to [at least temporarily] avoid having to play against a certain opponent would be broadcasting to every team at this tournament [including most especially that opponent] a level of fear and vulnerability that a prospective World Cup winning team should never display.

I like to think even Ellis and company realize this.

After all, if France gets close enough to taste it, they're apt to forget they are cheese-eating surrender monkeys.

Thank you for the translation, but I really meant "Should I in any way find this important on this game day when rooting for the U.S. compels me to root against Sweden and every player on that team?" :D

Hey guys, well, any predictions? I'm leaning toward a US win because yeah.... of course I would but I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up another tie. It will be another upset if Sweden wins over US. It wouldn't be the end of the world because US would still advance but it would either light a fire under the US to go even harder or it will haunt them if they make it to the quarter-finals against France.

Whatever happens, our ladies aren't defeated too easily without a dramatic fight till the end so here we go!

Alyssa Naeher, you ready girl? You betta be.......

USA wins 3-0 in an easy cakewalk game. The lineup doesn't matter as any combination of US players will win the WC.

How is that for confidence. Give them the trophy now and lets get some French Pastries and relax.
