its not that i cant see this team getting 4, but i cant see them getting 4 now. not even against guyana. theres just no indicators of that happening- no proven combos, no one area we are far ahead of others, etc.

ill be fine- all things considered- with a decisive 2-0. again it just seems crazy to say we are going to get 4, 5 or whatever. based on what? we have seen NOTHING to suggest that. can pulisic bag a hat trick himself due to his quality? of course, but thats utterly independant of what this team has actually shown.

i dont want to say theres NO goal flukey enough that we concede, but it would have to be one crazy ass deflection/call/series of events to not be very disappointing.

so thata my bar. a solid 2-0. look like we have SOME plan that works. berhalters first game is basically the bar for me, cause weve only regressed since then. we are down a few key players.

if lwe look like we did in these last two friendlies and manage to get the breaks to flip the jamaica scoreline in our favor it wont mean anything to me.

berhalter HAS to set us up and have us play better than we have been. this opener is the only chance we have to get our shit together cause trinidad or panama taking points off of us wouldnt surprise anyone.

and talking about process and getting there or any of that if we dont make it out of the group stage is unacceptable.

ive loved and followed this team for...26 years. its disgusting that we are going to have to overachieve relative to what weve seen from this particular group to not be the measurably worst team in my couple and a half decades of supporting us soccer.

I think we're getting something like this:

    ---Boyd--Altidore--Arriola---
    -----Pulisic----McKennie-----
    -------------Bradley-------------
    Ream--Miazga--Long--Lima
    -------------Steffen-------------

My assumption in the last 6 months has always been that Berhalter will have Trapp supplant Bradley. I don't know if that's true anymore.

Pulisic will be captain. Obviously, with Ream at left back Berhalter will be continuing with the system.

I expect this one to be about as revealing of true US quality as USWNT v. Thailand, with the difference that USMNT will play down to the level of its opponent for long stretches and struggle to break down Guyana's bunker. 2-0.

It's amazing reading some of these posts. We've been reduced to "hoping" that we look decent against Guyana, a country I couldn't point to on a map, and maybe scraping by with a 2-0, 3-0 result.

Man, our talent has really fallen off sharply!!! /s

I think it comes from a sober assessment of the talent of the squad, and the belief that Berhalter can correct the errors that were on display last week. I don't know that I agree with the second, but frankly this is a team that has some talent. I am trying desperately to name some of that real talent outside of Pulisic and McKennie, but I am struggling to do so.

    Steffen, another gaff coming up?
Lima, serviceable, but no end product offensively
    Miazga, adequate
Long, um, lit up by Rondon, who would probably start for every team in this confed not named Mexico
    Ream, please.
Bradley or Trapp? Not at this point
Arriola? Can't hit the broad side of a barn, which I think is actually smaller than the goal.
    Morris? Nope
Boyd? Maybe, haven't seen enough of him yet
Altidore? Yet to be seen how he'll do over a whole tourney, if his parts hold up.

OK, so I guess I have to even retract my talent statement. I don't know that this team has more talent than a Jamaica. Certainly not more in the starting XI than Costa Rica, and well behind Mexico even without their missing 8-9 players.

Crazy how far behind we are at this point.

I wish we announced our line-ups the night before like Brazil.

Something so cool about that. Here it is. Try to beat us.

Great post and I agree with the whole thing, but this line is the key. Absolutely dire. I actually convinced myself at some point this spring that as hot as Wondo has been he would be a consideration for the Gold Cup. That's how bad our situation is at the moment at the 9 position. It's almost as bad as our left back situation. Altidore is literally the only option at the moment, as flawed as he is.

Now, it seems that many countries have to deal with the lack of an in form goal scoring 9, and many deal with it by either playing a target man who can win balls and hold up well, and others use a false 9. Who knows, maybe the Gregg is using Altidore and El Burro in the former fashion with hopes that they can hold up the ball?

Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if a USA fan started it, sadly. Saw some ugly stuff in 2005 in Columbus from a car full of USA bros harassing a Mexican guy after the game.

he didnt forget anything. its very important to those guys while giving altidores resume to be very selective, to give the impression he once scored 38 goals in a meaningless friendly at home to el salvador in which they werent allowed across the border. everything else was a fluke, hes half the player zardes is or something. kenny cooper with one leg maybe?

    dont bother.

Not so interested in how many goals we score against a team that should have no chance, at all, with us. I am hoping for 9 points out of. this group. No less. If we win by one and use it as a defensive scrimmage, so be it. 9 points!!

ie Berhalter is a moron because

    A) a player who was "eager" to get a call up didn't - clearly a moron eligible faux pas
    B) a lone "media" source from Germany wished he would

The kind of hard-hitting deduction we love on BS.

Apparently, Wooten is planning for a move to MLS this summer. So that should increase his call-up chances.

No opinion on the guy, but he did thwack in 17 last season (in Bundesliga 2, of course). Hopefully, Gregg has scouted him

C’mon. You saw that he was responding to another post who stated that Wooten may not even want to play for the USMNT.

Wooten isn’t a world beater but we have a terrible striker pool and he scored 17 goals in a league at least as good as MLS while as OfficeSpace frequently points out our leading Domestic MLS striker has 6 goals.

    Jozy - 5 goals
    Zardes - 6 goals
    Morris - 4 goals

Even on a per game basis (he’s played more games), he’s well above who was brought in but didn’t even get a look at the 40 man roster.

The perspective that it’s not a decision worthy of real criticism is ridiculous. I could do without gunner7’s hyperbole and overstatements but the underlying point is valid IMO.

    How dare you sir!?
Look man, since we beat all of those teams like San Marino and nobody cares about passing or hold-up play, the Jozy poor mouthing is correct.

Also, you must hold injuries against him, even though there is no indication that he is unprofessional in his training.
