I think it’d be hilarious if they celebrated their next goal with a round of firm handshakes.

    I am against the celebrations

    I am for equal pay

I am still curious what the women want though financially because that has nothing to do with equal pay.

I don't think that USWNT will win this World Cup, but let's see.

Alex Morgan could have stayed in Europe if she wanted to. For much more money. I guess she wants to play for the USWNT and the US coach is so stubborn that she wouldn't care about players in Europe might have led to her decision to play for much less money in much less competitive environment than Europe. She can blame only herself about her financial situation.

Based on what I've seen, I'm pretty sure the current CBA requires the players to play in the US. Or at least a certain number of them.

With all this discussion and hoopla about their celebrations, it sets up a great record breaking broadcast of their next game just to see what they are going to do and I'm pretty sure they are planning out what they are going to do after they score goals since everybody is watching them now. I'm willing to bet in this day and age of social media, they can totally troll and create memes for people on twitter now. The brilliance of this buzz on them couldn't have happened at a better time in that Game of Thrones officially ended their series a few weeks prior, and they are essentially riding the Danerys Targaryen train now, or riding the dragon...

Overall, this negative reaction to their "over celebrating" is a positive for attention for this tournament overall and magnifies the USWNT even more before the knockout stage. I'm willing to bet fox sports are having drinks and laughing about the attention right now.

I love the whole Hulu dynamic that others have pointed out. Don’t look for Fox to throw any blame on one of their sponsors :D:D:D

Canada's all about being classy... they never chuck their Silver Medals up into the stands after losing in the finals of a tournament.

First tie break after points are goal-difference, so every goal IS valuable.
So celebrating every single one of them is appropriate.
If goal difference was lower in the tie-break (as in the EURO championship) I can that the argument about celebrating, as if it is now US WNT can't be blame for it. If you don't like it take it up with FIFA they are the organization that decide which teams can enter and award teams for beating them as hard as possible,

It sounds like you're basing your judgement on either 1) What some guy told you at the water cooler at work Wednesday morning, or 2) What some sports talk radio host said during your drive to work Wednesday morning. Did you actually watch the game? Because your comment in the post right before this one complained about the 11th goal. But then you come back 2 inches later and say "no one is complaining about... Pugh." WHO SCORED THE 11TH GOAL you were bitching about. And really, with the exception of the Rapinoe display, I thought the celebrations after the 5th goal or so were rather reserved. Lloyd barely reacted at all.

May I also argue, this arrogance isn't new. This is American culture brought on by legends in the field.

The late and awesome Debbie Reynolds wouldn't have had any issues continuing this game.

I hope we win every game of the tournament 13-0, with each game having brazen goal celebrations after each-and-every goal, causing conniption fits throughout the world.

Yeah, this is the first complaint I've heard about Lloyd.

I guess Lloyd having almost no reaction at pointing to Press to give her credit for setting her up with the perfect pass was over the top.

I guarantee, if Rapinoe didn't do her celebration on the 9th goal, there wouldn't even be a story.

My favorite is the Canadian Sports channel that is overly chastising the USWNT, that just one day early was vehemently defending the Toronto fans in the NBA Finals Game 5 for cheering excessively about Kevin Durant getting injured and blowing out his Achilles Heel. They're claiming the world is over-reacting.

This story got the most backlash and momentum from Canada and the CanWNT... a country that was blasted by the media the day before for something far worse.

    Talk about hypocrisy!

The great Walter Payton after scoring a touchdown would just hand the ball to the closest referee, no excessive celebrating, no showing up the opponent.
Act like you've been there before.

I love it when people who've never been there before lecture someone's who's there that they should do what someone else was there before did.
    It makes sooo much sense.

I'm more ambivalent about this than most. But I find the complete knee jerk defensiveness by many USWNT fans as bizarre. It was a bad look, just own it.

You literally compared the celebration at the end of the tournament when the team JUST WON THE WORLD CUP to the celebration in the first game of the tournament, for the defending champions, when you have scored the 12th goal against Thailand.

Yes, I think a complete team celebration upon winning the World Cup is appropriate but probably not on goal number 12 against Thailand in the group stage.

THEY JUST WON THE WORLD CUP!

I can't believe people are equating that with scoring the 11th goal versus Thailand. Just shows, there is zero capacity for nuance or even proportionality.

BTW, the 99ers were whining and out of line criticizing the celebration. You can't defend the USA versus Thailand celebrating and then criticize how Norway celebrated winning the World Cup. Well, you can if you have no idea how logic works and are just in "fan mode".

The USWNT did it on purpose. It was deliberate. It was not spontaneous outbursts of joy. You can see Rapinoe egging Morgan to celebrate more on #7 or #8 (so many, who can remember). Then Pinoe goes absolutely totally nuts on #9. The message was sent and it was ridiculous from there. Morgan understands what Pinoe is up to and dances with the bench after #11. Even Ellis gets into it celebrating goals 10, 11, 12, 13 like I have never seen her celebrate anything before.

But they meant it. Are they bad people, did they hurt feelings? Who cares and Yes! On Purpose.

It is the message they wanted to send. Stop trying to make excuses and go along for the ride. They have decided the only way to beat France in Paris is to be unbelievably ruthless in every facet of the game in every game. They want to re-establish the fear element that was lost since 2016.

I think many people agree that Rapinoe's celebration was too much or understand why others are reacting to that celebration... but the story is getting blown way out of proportion that every one of the celebrations at the end was like that, which is not even close to true.

I think the biggest knee jerk reaction is the people crying foul about all of the celebrations at the end. They barely celebrated most of the goals starting with the 4th with 1 or 2 (max) exceptions.

I don't think there was any intent to be disrespectful... none of it was directed at the Thailand players. Bad judgement on a couple of celebrations, specifically by Rapinoe, fine, I think her criticism is warranted, but to villainize the entire team is a joke to me.

Beating Thailand does not serve as an answer to the critics.

No need to smear people. Further, people, especiallly Ellis, have to stop playing the gender card anytime they are criticized.

I'm all for the equal pay fight. There is a whole thread around here where people are beating on me for pointing out the USWNT rights go to SUM (MLS) and none of that money goes to NWSL. The Women are subsidizing the Men's league and not their own.

But, it is a bad look to celebrate wildly the 9th goal, and later ones, against Thailand in game one. Sorry, take off your blinders.

Further, if you took off your blinders and stopped knee jerk defending the women you will see they did it on purpose.

So you think you know everything about me? Huh?

And I love it when those know-it-alls who have never been on this thread before are now here cutting down those of us who have been posting here for years and have been religious followers of the USWNT, on our comments.

New posters are always welcome and counter-arguments are always welcome, but don't come here attacking the comments of long-time posters who have followed this team, traveled to countless games around the country over years, have played this game all their lives, including college.
Often you know nothing about these posters to make such comments.

This is a subject where there are different viewpoints and it's OK..

    OK, this comment is ridiculous.

They weren't trying to rub anything in Thailand's face or intentionally be disrespectful.

This comment you made is actually a textbook knee-jerk reaction. There's no sign that their intent was to be disrespectful.

This is getting into the weeds a bit. But someone could have told Pinoe to calm down. Instead, whatever she was selling they bought.

Besides the celebrations, and I agree, most were nothing more than hugs. There was Lloyd being incredibly selfish in her play trying to score at all costs. She passed up goals by refusing to pass. She got her's though.

The biggest person to criticize in this is the Ref that added any stoppage time onto this massacre. Unbelievable.

People have weighed in on this. It won't matter by Sunday.
