Given cultural differences regarding exuberant celebrations, even if the U.S. players were just mildly happy about the goals, it's unlikely they would have muted their celebrations.

Now you are demonstrating that you have not been following this team, or at least not paying much attention to it.

Lloyd was subbed in because it was absolutely the normal sub for this year in this program. It was slightly unusual in that it was not for Morgan, but it did move Morgan out of position, which is one of the things people have been suggesting teams should do to hold down the score in a blowout.

Why would you make a "normal" sub in a blowout?

Ellis subs as much on people's fitness and the maintenance thereof as on tactics. Actually more,
    Much more.

    BTW...
Never claimed to have been doing much of either beyond the bare minimum.

Wait - you mean she's managing the team based on getting the best performance? Is she some kind of soccer coach or something? How are the players to behave in a way which most pleases the soccer etiquette experts if the coach doesn't set them up to please?

Dude, I’m actually starting to feel bad for you. It seems like they’ve robbed you of any enjoyment of this tournament or appreciation of this team. I hope the next couple of games can bring it back for you.

Thanks for your concern, but I'll be okay.

You might have also missed this:
I'm sure that I'll be quite content to watch the Gold Cup and a couple of F1 races over the next month.

And yet you feel qualified to interpret their sub pattern and criticize their choices...

Again, why keep to the pattern in a demolition? Why trot out the aging talisman in a game where one isn't remotely needed?

Also, when and what are the requirements for criticizing how players conduct themselves and how a national team plays a game? Seems to me there are a whole ********ton of "unqualified" commenters across all of BigSoccer for any given event.

You were wanting Morgan subbed when we had already used our subs earlier-- that's a bit extreme. And the "aging talisman" is arguably the most merciful sub available. I suppose she could have subbed in Long, but then she's subbing in a tall player against a short team and might be criticized for that choice in a blowout. We didn't bring any bad players with us, really.

Again, if you want to petition FIFA to adjust the rules to prevent this, I'll sign your petition, but there's a limit to what can be done as it stands. I suppose we could have put Franch in as a forward-- but I imagine her club team might see that as a cause for complaint...

Yes, I goofed on keeping track of the subs. I didn't watch the whole game, and what I did watch was pretty cringey even without the subs, to be honest. FWIW, my wife was more up in arms than I was, and she played at a higher level than O-30/40, that's for sure.

I just don't get making a high-risk/zero-reward move in a game where the outcome was known after the 2nd goal.

I'm sorry, but you've lost me now-- which move are you calling "high risk/ zero reward?" And, I suppose, why?

Bringing in Lloyd to press for some stupid "streak extender" goal for a half-hour against a team with absolutely nothing to lose.

Remember coaches: every time you sub a player, their lives are in your hands.

There we go with that reading... but, really, you know what that expression means.

You seem intent on this "streak extender" narrative despite the resounding debunking of your reasoning.

Wait, did she or did she not extend some sort of streak, by missing a couple of sitters, then scoring in the 93rd minute of a 12-0 game?

Again-- that's-- I'm sorry, but-- that's a stupid interpretation-- she brought in Lloyd because she had planned to bring in Lloyd at that point yesterday or last week or whenever, and there was no recently developed reason not to.

Anybody else she could bring in was even more likely to extend the blowout one way or another, unless she took to subbing in backup keepers at forward. And that's really risky...
