(I had responded to this in the other thread : my answer was something like Hanegem and for the rest I don't know, in gross = he's very probably the only one who will fall into my list of 23, in gross... Israël being not that far/ contender for one of the very last spots btw, as an addition)

This took vastly longer than expected:

Austria - Ferry Wimmer (United Press)

    1. Riva, 2. Muller, 3. Van Hanegem, 4. Mazzola, 5. Moore

The exploits of Riva and Italy dominate, in my opinion, all the year 1970. I give the number one to Gigi for its efficiency, its opportunism, its exceptional class. He still asserts it in spite of a ruthless mark, like that of the Austrian Hof who broke his leg in Vienna. To Muller the number two because he is also an exceptional scorer.

It is necessary to highlight a man of Feyenoord, champion of Europe, I do it in the person of Van Hanegem, hub of his team. I complete my cocktail with Mazzola to give a hat to the Squadra Azzurra. I finish it with a british pepper of high quality since it is called Moore.

Belgium - Jacques Lecoq (Les Sports)

Muller, 2. Moore, 3. Rivera, 4. Overath, 5. Van Hanegem

I place Muller at number one for his extraordinary efficiency, which has been expressed both in Mexico and nationally since he is also the owner of the 'golden shoe' Adidas. I have just seen on Belgian television, during a broadcast dedicated to all goals of the World Cup, the ten goals scored by Muller. Power, okay, but what technique to be in ideal shooting position.

Moore number two for the security of his placement, the correction of his game and his dignity, both after a defeat of his team that during the scandalous incidents he was a victim before the World Cup.

Rivera would deserve better than number three if he had been allowed to express himself fully at the World Cup. He remains the personification of Italian football in the best.

Bulgaria - Georges Miltchev (Front de la Patrie)

    1. Muller, 2. Banks, 3. Dzajic, 4. Riva, 5. Djorkaeff

Top scorer in the FF and adidas Golden Boot World Cup, Gerd Muller is undoubtedly the footballer of the year. After a slight eclipse on injury, Muller has once again become one of the best West German footballers for the greatest satisfaction of his club Bayern Munich.

Banks, high-class goalkeeper has long been 'bar' by this marvel of football that was Yashin. Today he has no competitor and deserves without any doubt a place of honor among the 'big' of the year.

The Yugoslavian Dzajic broke the international ceiling three years ago and since then he remains one of the best European attackers. He is entitled this year to a more tangible consecration.

The magician from Cagliari, second last year, has confirmed this season in both the World Cup and the Italian Championship his class.

Czechoslovakia - Rudolf Dvorak and Salek (Mlada Fronta)

    1. Muller, 2. Moore, 3. Riva, 4. Overath, 5. Shesternev

Looking back at the sensational World Cup encounters, how not to make Muller, the king of Europe? The most important thing in football is to score goals. But Muller is of the breed of cannoniers. His realism is fantastic. It is he who decides for the happiness of Germany and Bayern Munich.

The Italian Riva has the same qualities, but we prefer Bobby Moore for the second place because he has a more complete football.

The German Overath, better than ever, and the Soviet Shesternev, an impassable barrier, completed our honor roll.

Denmark - Poul Prip Anderson (Berlingske Tidende)

    1. Overath, 2. Banks, 3. Muller, 4. Cruyff, 5. Riva

He does things well, with talent and efficiency. He is modest in his game but indispensable to his team. It is Overath the metronome of Germany. What a beautiful number one! In number 2, a goalkeeper, a post or the giants are more and more rare. Yes, Gordon Banks indisputable in a very difficult role in today's football.

A 3 for Gerd Muller, the king of scorers.

A 4 Cruyff always equal to himself, and finally a 5 for Riva the typical scorer, certainly, but much more 'footballer' than we think at first.

East Germany - Horst Braunlich (Berlin-Est)

    1. Moore, 2. Riva, 3. Overath, 4. Muller, 5. Israel

Bobby Moore is worthy of the first rank because he made a year without fault. What solidity, what lucidity, what sportiness! I prefer him to Riva, a great breed scorer, to whom Italy and Cagliari owe fortunes. Of course, German football must be honored as it marks the World Cup. I therefore underline the merits of Overath, one of the best European footballers in Mexico, where the Muller cannon is a ton. In a world where his name is rarely brought to the fore, I think it's important to focus on the merits of the Dutchman Israel. He explains the sensational victory of Feyenoord in the European Cup.

England - Max Marquis (Sunday Times)

    1. Moore, 2. Beckenbauer, 3. Hurst, 4. Muller, 5. Shesternev

Bobby Moore is my favorite for all the reasons of football and sport. He plays well, he is efficient, he commands and he even lives and career of man in perfect gentleman. Even in stories like Bogota ..

The talent of the magician Beckenbauer impresses me a lot, but I do not forget the realism of Hurst and that of Muller the canon of German football. Finally, how not to emphasize the solidity and the presence of Shesternev, living image of the Soviet balloon?

Finland - Charles Guillou (No publication specified)

    1. Riva, 2. Rivera, 3. Muller, 4. Eusebio, 5. Moore

Squadra azzurra played in the final of the World Cup. This is a great feat that right appear in this palmares. I therefore place Riva, the scorer, and Rivera, the playmaker, in the first two places.

After the champions of calcio, I underline the personality of Muller, terror of the German football. I do not forget Eusebio who was a heroic Golden Ball. Finally, I will not make the mistake of avoiding the quote of Bobby Moore, symbol of English continuity.

France - Jacques Ferran (France Football)

    1. Muller, 2. Domenghini, 3. Moore, 4. Riva, 5. Overath

Many very great European footballers have shown up this year, and it is not easy to classify them, because none of them stands out. But it seems logical to me the departing at the end of the count thanks to the lessons of the World Cup. Gerd Muller deserves the first place for its effectiveness in all circumstances (World Cup, despite the Brazilians, and Golden Shoe for 69-70). Domenghini comes next, because, host of Cagliari, champion of Italy, he was number 1 squadra azzurra, finalist in Mexico. Moore is, after Charlton, the symbol of the English presence. Riva would be better off if he had not 'failed' in Mexico. Overath is, with Muller, Beckenbauer and Seeler, the hero of the great German performance at ‘Mundial’.

Greece - Angelos Foutoukidis (Athlitiki Icho)

    1. Beckenbauer, 2. Moore, 3. Dzajic, 4. Seeler, 5. Riva

Talent always deserves, in my opinion, I take precedence over hard work. I am happy, therefore, to put Beckenbauer on the podium. Especially since he has also done courage in Mexico by remaining in the field despite a break in the clavicle. Yes, Beckenbauer, in front of Moore the gentleman-realist, Dzajic, forward winger of the continent, Seeler, the fighter of the fighters.

And Riva? Of course he is still among the kings of European football. His misstep from Mexico made him lose points.

    Hungary - Laszlo Lukacs (Nepszabadsag)

    1. Beckenbauer, 2. Moore, 3. Riva, 4. Dzajic, 5. Hasil

Permit me to regret again and again that the 'Golden Ball' did not exist at the time of Bozsik, the genius of football. Thinking of him, I make Beckenbauer my number one because it is a conductor who sees everything on the ground, a sovereign lord, a figure on a chess game.

Bobby Moore is the professional footballer at the word total. He is full of strength, health, tranquility.

Riva has an extraordinary talent as a scorer. He deserves to be among the kings despite a halftone World Cup.

Finally two names, Dzajic, always the best left winger of Europe, Hasil which symbolizes the virtues of classicism and reality.

Italy - Aldo Bardelli (Gazzetta dello Sport)

    1. Overath, 2. Moore, 3. Mazzola, 4. Muller, 5. Dumitrache and Facchetti

All the observers of the World Cup (the test that influences, of course, this ranking), were struck by the quality and variety of the game of the German Overath. It is time, in my opinion, to distinguish his merits in broad daylight. Overath is a metronome essential to his selection and his club.

Bobby Moore is also a key figure in all areas. I place it before Mazzola, the number one Italian football player in Mexico. Then I recognize the terrible efficiency of Muller, without whom Germany would not have hit millions of viewers. Finally, it is difficult for me to separate for very opposite reasons the Romanian Dumitrache and Facchetti, the captain of the squadra, an exceptional example of efficiency, conduct and righteousness in all circumstances.

Luxembourg - Gerard Boulay (Le Republicain Lorrain)

    1. Dzajic, 2. Moore, 3. Riva, 4. Israel, 5. Kreische

Dzajic's choice in the first place is explained by the fact that we find ourselves in the presence of a superior man who has been for many years now among the best European footballers, although still very young. . Dzajic is the left winger who, alone, is able to tip a match as he often did. This consecration he deserves more than any other.

Moore symbolizes English football always present and terribly effective. Riva is the class in the pure state, with maybe too much personality, but it's also Italy in the final of the World Cup.

Israel, the captain of Holland and Feyenoord, is also a world title for the old continent with the Intercontinental Cup.

Finally, Kreische is the rising RDA in the football concert and a boy who is both a remarkable organizer but also a scorer, a boy who will speak again.

Netherlands - Anton Witkamp (De Telegraaf)

    1. Seeler, 2. Muller, 3. Israel, 4. Riva, 5. Moore

It happens, no doubt, at the end of a sacred career. It symbolizes German football that nothing repels. So, yes, Seeler ... with a little sentimental tip at the expense of Muller, another lion among the lions.

Israel! Do you know a lot of 'classmates' as consistent in the effort, as influential in the performance of their team? It's the best libero in Europe. I rank it in front of Riva 'the shot' and Moore who symbolizes wonderfully well the ecstatic health of British football.

    Norway - JV Lunde (AP)

    1. Moore, 2. Muller, 3. Lee, 4. Riva, 5. Kindvall

Those who followed the World Cup in Mexico as hundreds of millions of viewers, still see the extraordinary Bobby Moore of England-Brazil. I give him a preference in front of Muller, the German juicer. Lee, poison among the poisons, Riva, unfortunately quits before the end 70.

My number 5 is called Kindvall, a Nordic note that seems to me justified by the presence of Sweden in Mexico and the triumph of Feyenoord in the European Cup.

    Poland - Kasmir Gryzewski (Express)

    1. Riva, 2. Muller, 3. Kindvall, 4. Ball, 5. Beckenbauer

Shooters at the end of the year 70! Two names explode at the top. I give my preference to Riva more a footballer than Muller in the realm of strikers. In number 3 why not Kindvall to whom Feyenoord owes, in large part, its European title?

Ball is also one of the best European attackers. I classify him for the vivacity and the variety of his style. In front of Beckenbauer, charming football player essential to any honor roll.

Portugal - Couto E Santos (Mundo Deportivo)

    1. Muller, 2. Riva, 3. Cooper, 4. Beckenbauer, 5. Cruyff

I consider that Muller deserves the first place, not only because he was top scorer of the world championship, but also because he has an increasingly rare quality, that of wrestler. He never turns his face to the defenders and does not waste time near the eighteen meters. He is the worthy successor of Kocsis, Fontaine and Eusebio.

I then place Riva, despite Rivera and Mazzola, Fachetti and even Boninsegna, thinking of Mexico. Gigi is in all the fights and it has cost him dear.

Three names now: the Englishman Cooper, defender and high-class attacker; Beckenbauer, the great moments of the German team, Cruyff whose technical background and always impressive.

Republic of Ireland - Dermot Ashmore (Irish Times)

    1. Muller, 2. Beckenbauer, 3. Riva, 4. Facchetti, 5. Israel

Without a doubt, Gerd Muller deserves the first place. The European Golden Shoe and the World Cup Gunner do not have a rival, especially after the disappointment of Riva and the Rivera eclipse in Mexico. We can not forget the superb match of Beckenbauer against England. He is my second. But Riva must remain among the 'big', for his exploits with Cagliari. He is followed in my ranking by Facchetti, the calm and admirable captain of Squadra Azzurra, who has deserved the title of vice-world champion. Finally, one point to the other men's leader, Israel, from Feyenoord, although the final of the European Cup (and the goal of Kindvall) has long been forgotten.

    Romania - Aurel Neagu (Sportul)

    1. Riva, 2. Moore, 3. Overath, 4. Dzajic, 5. Dinu

The strength, stubbornness, efficiency of Riva deserve to be honored in this year end palmares. Even if Gigi did not quite affirm his astonishing personality in Mexico. I then design Moore 'all England football' and Muller 'all the German punch'. A Yugoslav note with Dzajic, still brilliant and decisive for his colors. And why not a ticket of satisfaction to the Romanians in the person of Dinu? Believe me, it is well worth European stars in title …

Spain - Merce Varela (Mundo Deportivo)

    1. Moore, 2. Beckenbauer, 3. Cruyff, 4. Muller, 5. Rexach

The defensive solidity of the England team is based on Bobby Moore's class, his foresight, his physical condition, his technique and his captain's intelligence. He surmounted with British dignity the campaign of defamation he suffered during the World Cup (case of Bogota). This is for me the perfect example of the complete gentleman-sportsman.

Behind him, I class Beckenbauer, the type of versatile footballer who also has a lot of courage. You have not forgotten his semi-final World Cup against Italy with a broken collarbone.

My number three is Cruyff, builder and efficient finisher. The number four Muller, the goal man. Finally, I want to bring a Spanish note to my choice. I do it in the person of Rexach, left winger of the national team. It's a technician who scores goals.

Sweden - Wolf Lyberg (Sveriges Riksidrottsforbund)

    1. Riva, 2. Muller, 3. Moore, 4. Beckenbauer, 5. Skoblar

1970 was the year of strikers, but also a year without big players. Looking at the tour list of European internationals, I have never experienced so much difficulty in making my choice.

I decide for Riva and Muller and you know why. I also underline the personality of Moore, gold value of the team of England. I do not forget Beckenbauer, the greatest technician of the moment. In conclusion, I hesitated for a long time between my compatriot Magnusson and Skoblar, both of Marseille. But since 1970 is the year of efficiency, I lean towards Skoblar, regretting not being able to classify neither Mazzola nor Fazekas, nor Vogel, trump card of the GDR.

Switzerland - Raymond Pittet (La Tribune de Lausanne)

    1. Moore, 2. Cruyff, 3. Overath, 4. Beckenbauer, 5. Muller

We can ignore the Mundial and the contribution of these players to their team, as much as their respective club. Cruyff is perhaps, in pure value, one of the most striking attackers in the world and he improved his collective game, despite, it is said, his bad character.

We might have named Banks, Rivera, Domenghini, Petras, Kuna, Ossianine, Odermatt, Bobby Charlton, Best, Devrindt, McNeil, Zaldua, etc., but we must choose. It is for his psychological firmness, his moral and technical ascendancy on his team that I put Moore in the front row.

Turkey - Samin Var (Hurriyet Gazetesi)

    1. Moore, 2. Riva, 3. Cruyff, 4. Muller, 5. Mazzola

A resounding affair has made Moore a news star. He did not need this police comedy to strike the imaginations. It is, in my eyes, the best European player 70 for all its qualities.

Riva made squadra a team present in Mexico City. His relative failure of the World Cup takes nothing away from the merits devoted to Cagliari.

Cruyff, Muller and Mazzola ... you know them well. Then you will understand the rest of my ranking.

USSR - No journalist specified (Football)

    1. Muller and Shesternev, 3. Dzajic, 4. Mazzola, 5. Ball

Our editors could not finally be divided for number one. So we design Muller the striker and Shesternev the balance in first rank. No second, therefore, but a third Dzajic that makes the happiness of Yugoslav football. As much as Mazzola symbolizes the fearsome calcio. And then a tribute to Britain's football in the person of Ball, winger of great value.

West Germany - Hans Blickensdorfer (Stuttgarter Zeitung)

    1. Muller, 2. Dzajic, 3. Beckenbauer, 4. Riva, 5. Lee

I do not try to flatter German football. But I think that Muller is the indisputable European leader for 1970. He has a sense of purpose, rarely achieved. He is also indestructible. Behind him I place the Yugoslavian Dzajic. I am convinced that this boy of 24 years will progress a lot and that he will be, perhaps one day, Ballon d'Or of France Football.

One can not establish a class of the class without Beckenbauer. One can not ignore the terrible effectiveness of Riva either. Finally, as a British touch is still essential to football I think it worth mentioning the name of Lee. An attacker like no other. Some regrets: Overath, Newton, Bremner, Cruyff and Israel.

    Yugoslavia - Jovan Velichkovic (Tempo)

    1. Overath, 2. Riva, 3. Moore, 4. Dzajic, 5. Skoblar

The overriding influence of Overath in the German game appeared in Mexico in an eclatant way.

His precision, his efficiency, and his coolness deserve the highest praise. Riva? Efficiency in all its forms in the squadra as in Cagliari. Moore? The ideal successor of all those who make great football in England. Dzajic? The best Yugoslav. He will rise again in the hierarchy of the elite.

And then in hat trick to our 'Josip who makes the rain and the weather in Marseille.

The 1970 Ballon d'Or was the second time (after 1966) an European Cup winner finished as low as 10th in the ranking.
Just another proof of the systematic neglect I'm talking about.

I hope that Gregoriak does not mind that he uses his thread "1969-70 - British Team of the Season" to enrich this other thread.

The Top Eleven Players in Great Britain 1969-70
    Rothmans Golden Boots Award

    Gordon Banks
Stoke City & England, 22 votes

Pelé stood unbelievingly, hands raised high. Then he lowered them to applaud. He had just witnessed perhaps the greatest goalkeeping save of all time. It was during the Brazil-England game at Guadalajara in the Mexico ’70 World Cup. Committed to his dive at a rocketing Pelé header, Banks twisted in mid-air as the ball shot off the fast turf, and flicked the ball up and over the bar. Small wonder that Pelé embraced him as ‘the world’s greatest goalkeeper’.

Banks has been the integral part of Ramsey’s defence almost since the manager took over. He is Mr. Coolness; Ice Cold at Stoke, and simile you like to associate with this pleasant, happy, talented man. He has already gained a World Cup winners medal in 1966. Now, at 31, he is ready to carry on for another in Germany in four years hence.

Epilogue to England, beaten by West Germany, was provided by Jack Charlton: ‘In the bedroom where Gordon lies ill, lies England’s World Cup.’

    David Hay
    Celtic & Scotland, 10 votes

Many people outside Glasgow can be forgiven for not having heard a great deal about the surprise selection in the Golden Boots team. The first time many saw David Hay in action was in the televised game against England last April. Taking stock at the end of a momentous first season Hay can reflect, it is not every young player who plays right back in the European Cup final, starts his international career at inside left, and then becomes the main choice of the Sassenach press as the best No. 2 in Britain!

Now he joins the ranks of the great modern full backs who are able to overlap like a winger, and operate up and down like an inside forward.

    Terry Cooper
Leeds United & England, 21 votes

Terry Cooper is perhaps the most controversial choice of the whole team. For Johnstone proved that he can be beaten. So did the West German substitute Grabowski after Cooper had outthought and outplayed the flying Libuda. Although he has speedily learned the new type full back technique, like many modern players he finds it difficult to re-adjust himself when an attacking winger comes at him. But he provides excitement and wonder with his brilliant dashes on the enemy goal.

Cooper was only one of three of the England squad to play in all four games in Mexico. He improved in ability and stature every time, and was the only man to smother the wing gallops of Jairzinho.

    Mike England
Tottenham Hotspur & Wales, 11 votes

Mike England, the Welshman whose name causes confusion when he scored in an international match against England, is not everybody’s choice as the main centre back in the Golden Boots team.

Some will claim that he is a better player only when ‘propped’ up by Terry Hennessey in the Walsh team, or when he had Peter Collins alongside him in the Tottenham lineup. But whatever criticism is offered against this very fine and sporting professional, we are sure that he would jump at the chance of playing in a rearguard four with Bobby Moore!

It must be heart-breaking for a centre forward to play against England. He looks, and is, big. A fierce and accurate header of the ball, he also covers ground in the penalty area as if wearing seven league boots. And when he lopes upfield for corners and free kicks it usually takes two men to cover him.

    Bobby Moore
West Ham United & England, 22 votes

There are times when Bobby Moore looks almost too casual on the field. He is casual, but that is because his lightning football brain leaves the necessary body movement until the last fraction of a second. Like a computer, he takes in every possible variation of the action against him before committing himself to a tackle or a pass.

At one time Moore suffered from crowd criticism outside London just because he came from a London club. Now he is as popular in the North as amongst his own vociferous Cockney fans.

After his displays for England in Mexico Bobby Moore is recognised in many countries as the World’s No. 1 Footballer. He has immense skill and the hotter the situation, the cooler he looks.

He has become used to holding up the trophies at great events …. Footballer of the Year; captain of England’s World Cup winning team at Wembley; captain of West Ham United when they won the European Cup Winners Cup, the FA Cup and the American Soccer Knock-Out Cup in New York.

A model for all young – and old – players, he is our choice to captain the Rothmans Golden Boots Team, should it ever get mobile as a unit.

    Billy Bremner
Leeds United & Scotland, 19 votes

If you are shown a small red-haired midfield player and asked to guess his style of play, it’s not difficult to give the right answer. The game has always had players of this type, with Alex Forbes and Tony Kay more recent examples. But if you are also told your player is Scottish, then your guess cannot be wrong, for the traditional characteristics of the redhead, and the footballer from over the border, make up the all-action fanatical, natural leader that has given so many Football League clubs that sought after ‘will to win’.

Billy Bremner has been a stormy petrel (remember that famous picture of fellow but older Scot, Dave Mackay, shaking Billy back to order?) but although his fanatical driving power still inspires Leeds United he has developed into a mature and respected ‘skipper’. A good enough sportsman and player to win the Footballer of the Year award by a record number of votes!

The choice for the midfield positions was practically unanimous, and there’s no doubt that ‘Billy and Bally’ would never surrender control of the match, let alone the centre of the field.

    Alan Ball
    Everton & England, 19 votes

Alan Ball’s performance in the 1966 World Cup final when he reduced the great Schnellinger to a hobbling wreck, will never be forgotten. But last season, Alan produced this non-stop style week in, week out to help his club, Everton, win the League championship. He is the perfect example of the modern ‘all-purpose footballer’, clearing from his own goalmouth one moment, shooting for goal the next, and like Bremner he is now using his fiery qualities to his club’s advantage, and avoiding trouble with referees.

Like his partner in the ‘Golden Boots’ team, Alan is a footballer who makes others play. He is a driving force, and a fine example who plays only to win. It would be difficult to imagine a more devastating midfield ‘team’.

    Jimmy Johnstone
    Celtic & Scotland, 11 votes

The sight of a winger streaking down the wing, beating his full back, and centring for three other forwards is a rarity in modern football. So Jimmy Johnstone’s performances for Celtic were welcomed with particular enthusiasm last season. He follows in a long line of trickery ball playing Scottish wingers, and is no doubt inspired more than most by the fine players around him. The way he tore poor Terry Cooper apart in the European Cup semifinal, this ensuring double marking in the Cup Final against Feyenoord, stamped him as one of the game’s top ‘attractions’. When his side are under pressure he is quite capable of working in midfield but the thought of him in the ‘Golden Boots’ team centring to Ron Davies and Geoff Hurst would be enough to give any opposing defence nightmares, and ensure capacity attendances wherever they played.

    Ron Davies
    Southampton & Wales, 13 votes

The big occasion brings the best out of Ron Davies. England will confirm this after their last two matches against Wales, as will Manchester United and Chelsea who have conceded four goals apiece to the Southampton centre forward on their own grounds. His ability in the air is perhaps second to none in the First Division and there’s no doubt that he Hampshire club would have little difficulty finding a buyer willing to pay £ 200,000 for him. His spectacular headed goals often tend to detract from his excellent ball control, which for a big man is surprisingly good under the severe pressure that the modern ‘striker’ has to endure.

    Geoff Hurst
West Ham United & England, 14 votes

Geoff Hurst will always be remembered for his World Cup final hat-trick in 1966. He has had his fair share of glory but as one of the first of the modern ‘strikers’ who was forced to operate without wingers, Geoff has had to suffer frustrations that older centre forwards never faced. Packed defences, all possessing one or two limited but effective ‘markers’ make life a misery for front runners who usually have to ‘hunt’ in twos. Geoff has taken rough treatment on the field and criticism from the game’s less perceptive critics, without resorting to any type of retaliation. He, like Ron Davies, has remained a fine example of the modern professional. His qualities as a player have never been questioned since he became an England regular in 1966 and the fact that he has withstood the pressures of four years at the top, in the game’s hardest position, says all that needs to be said about this character.

    George Best
    Manchester United & Northern Ireland

No British eleven would be complete without George Best. He is fast becoming a legend in his own lifetime and has already carved his name into the record books of soccer.

A fabulous performer, whose object is to get on with the sorcery and goal scoring of his game, but unhappily whose temperament occasionally lets him down when his aims are roughly halted, by uncompromising defenders. He resents these assaults, and sometimes finds it too much to bear when referees fail to spot the offenders.

No British player can compare with George when he is on top form, while his wealth and ‘pop star’ image has given professional football a new standing in the eyes of the teenage fans.

Playing in this ‘Golden Boots’ side, George would be in his element and no doubt would add the final flamboyant moments of sheer class to the two million pounds worth of talent on show.

Players that received also votes but did not manage a place in the team were:

Dutch players are "bad characters" according to the France Football jury but some perennial cheats are "class".

The propaganda machines and cartel is strong again.

I found, in an interesting report from the magazine "Estadio", about the best soccer players of WC 1970, a proposal of the best team for Pancho Alsina.

Here is a list of candidates for the top 23 of the 1969-70 season. Each name is accompanied by their nationality, team in which they play and some notes that I have been able to find out about each one. You can add information and provide new names that you think may be voted on this season. We can leave some time for everyone to vote freely for their favorites.

Albertosi (Italy-Cagliari): Win the league receiving only 11 goals in 30 games. He stops a penalty at a very important moment against Juventus; the referee sends it back and stops it again. It occupies the third place in the rating of the DBS Calcio season. Rounding out his great season with the world sub-championship with his national team.
Ancheta (Uruguay-Nacional): In the 4th place of Uruguay in the WC, he was one of his most outstanding players. Not in vain was included in the ideal XI of the championship. In addition, the league wins.
Artime (Argentina-National): Win the Uruguayan league being its top scorer with 21 goals in a league of 20 games.
Ball (England-Everton): 18th in the Golden Ball. One of the best Everton players who so brilliantly and clearly won the league title. He collaborated in this success with 10 goals. In the Top Eleven Great Britain (Rothmans) with 19 out of a total of 22 votes.
Banks (England-Stoke City): Play 10 games with the English national team, fitting a total of 4 goals. Especially brilliant was his game in the match against Brazil in the World Cup in which among other stops, he makes one to Pelé that is considered one of the best interventions in history. Even if he lost that match, he had the satisfaction of taking revenge for the two great goals that Pelé scored for him in Stoke City - Santos in September 1969. His absence could have been decisive in the elimination of England in the quarterfinals of the WORLD CUP. It is part of the XI "Goal", Fussball Woche, Eric Batty and Top Eleven Great Britain of Rothmans (with 100% of the votes). He occupied 8th place in the Golden Ball.
Beckenbauer (Germany-Bayern Munich): He continues to be one of the most outstanding footballers in Europe, as evidenced by the fact that he was chosen 4th in the Golden Ball election and was included in the most important teams of the season: "Goal",Fussball Woche, Eric Batty, FIFA World Cup. Although Kicker classifies him with the best Bundesliga rating (1.50), "only" is elected 5th best footballer in Germany. Play 11 of the 13 games that Germany disputes this season with 9 wins and one loss, the one suffered at the hands of Italy in the semifinals, in whose match during a part of it played with the arm in a sling. Before, in the quarterfinals, he played an impressive match against England. With Bayern he gets 2nd place in the league, but he is eliminated in the 1st round of the European Cup.
Best (Northern Ireland-Manchester United): Holds a season dotted with incidents on and off the field. Within a mediocre league with his team, Best scores 15 goals. Especially inspired was in an FA Cup match against Northampton Town in which he scored 6 goals. He is included in the Top Eleven Great Britain (Rothmans), justifying his inclusion, despite not getting votes ...
Boninsegna (Italy-Inter): Finalist WORLD CUP. He was the author of one of the goals of the semifinal and scored the honor in the final. In the league he obtains the subchampionship and in the Fairs Cup he scores 9 goals.
Bremner (Scotland-Leeds United): Footballer of the year in England (FWA). Semi-finalist of the European Cup and 2nd in the league. In the Top Eleven Great Britain (Rothmans) (19 votes out of 22 possible). Also chosen in the ideal XI of the "Goal" magazine.
Burgnich (Italy-Inter): Indisputable in the Italian national team, playing all 10 games of the season. Finalist in the World Cup and 2nd in the league. It appears in the XI of Fussball Woche.
Byshovets (USSR-Dynamo Kiev): Play 14 of the 16 matches of the USSR, with 9 goals, playing a good role with your team in the World Cup with 4 goals in 4 matches. 5th Eastern european player of the year.
Carlos Alberto (Brazil-Santos): Champion WORLD CUP 1970. In the retina of many, the impressive goal he scored in the final. It integrates the ideal eleven of the championship and the ideal selection of 1970 for Eric Batty. With Santos does not pass the 4th place in the Paulista Championship of 1970.
Challe (Peru-University): Win league 1969. International with Peru in the 1970 World Cup.
Charlton, Bobby (England-M. United): Participates in 11 of the 13 games that England plays this season, but is several times replaced in the WORLD CUP. However, he was chosen in the XI WORLD CUP 1970. He gets a modest 8th place in the league, a championship in which he scores 12 goals.
Chumpitaz (Peru-University): It was designated Peruvian sports character of the year. Win the 1969 league and make a good world championship.
Clodoaldo (Brasil-Santos): Win the World Cup with Brazil. He is one of the most outstanding midfielders of the tournament.
Cooper (England-Leeds United): His cheerful and offensive football fell in love with many spectators. He was semifinalist of the European Cup and 2nd in the league. In the Top Eleven Great Britain (Rothmans) (21 votes out of 22 possible). 18th in the Golden Ball.
Cruyff (Netherlands-Ajax): Win the Dutch League and Cup. On an individual level, he was one of the top scorers of the championship with 22 goals. Cruyff's Ajax was a semifinalist of the FA Cup. With his selection, he coincided in a very strong group, not being able to achieve the qualification for the final phase of the World Cup. He is chosen in 7th place in the election of the Golden Ball.
Cubillas (Peru-Alianza de Lima): With Peru, he is a quarter-finalist in the WC with 5 goals in 4 matches. His good performances were a showcase for the rest of the world.
Deyna (Poland-Legia Warsaw): Win the Polish League and reach the semifinals of the European Cup. Play 6 matches out of the 9 that Poland plays (5-1-0) scoring 5 goals.
Dinu (Romania-Dinamo Bucharest): Footballer of the year in Romania. Intervenes in the 10 games that Romania plays in the season. 6th Eastern european player of the year.
Djorkaeff, Jean (France-O. Marseille): Indisputable holder in the 6 matches that France played that season and in which scored two goals.
Dirceu Lopes (Brasil-Cruzeiro): 2nd place in the Roberto Gomes Pedrosa in 1969 and in the Mineiro Championship in 1970. Bola de Prata 1970.
Dobias (Czechoslovakia-Spartak Trnava): Best Czech footballer of the year, although he does not win the league, because his team would occupy the 2nd position. Featured by some specialists as one of the best defenses of the WC.
Domenghini (Italy-Cagliari): 14th in the Golden Ball rankings. Win the league, which has a clear role with 8 goals. Play the 10 international matches of Italy, getting the second place in the world. Featured by Jacques Ferran, editor of France Football as the best in Italy in WORLD CUP.
Dzajic (Yugoslavia-Red Star) 6th in the Golden Ball ranking. He is considered the best left winger in Europe. With his team he wins the league and the Yugoslav Cup. It is elected Eastern european player of the year. He was part of the best XI of Fussball Woche.
Eusebio (Portugal-Benfica): Although with discomfort in the left knee of which he was operated at the end of the season, he was able to score 20 goals in 22 league games (top scorer) and be proclaimed footballer of the year in Portugal.
Facchetti (Italy-Inter): 18th place in the Golden Ball. Undeniable in the Italian team, playing the 10 games of the season. Finalist in the World Cup (where he was chosen in his ideal XI) and in league. It appears in the XI ideals of "Goal" and Fussball Woche.
Gerson (Brazil-Sao Paulo): His exceptional role in the WC that Brazil wins earned him the Silver Ball prize. It was the engine of the Brazilian game with a memorable performance in the final. He also manages to win the Paulista Championship. Eric Batty XI includes him in his ideal eleven of the year.
Grabowski (Germany-Eintracht Frankfurt): 3rd in WORLD CUP. It was not done with a position of indisputable titular with the German selection, playing, several times incomplete parties, in which its action was almost always, stood out. Better striker of the Bundesliga according to the ratings of Kicker and chosen, therefore, in his equipment of the year.
Hasil (Austria-Feyenoord): Another of the most outstanding elements of the winning team of the European Cup and league runner-up, in which he scored 8 goals.
Hurst (England-West Ham): Despite the team's catastrophic season in the league, he was 18th in the Golden Ball ranking and included in the Top Eleven Great Britain (Rothmans) (14 votes).
Iríbar (Spain-At. Bilbao): Zamora Trophy of the Spanish league to fit 20 goals in 30 games. The sports newspapers of the time highlight sensational matches in all competitions throughout the season, as in the victory of Spain by 2 to 0 against Germany.
Israel (Holland-Feyenoord) 10th in the Golden Ball. Win the European Cup in his great game in which marks the first goal of the final. Despite suffering a single loss in the entire league, Feyenoord finished 2nd. It was included in the XI "Goal".
Jairzinho (Brasil-Botafogo): Champion WORLD CUP 1970. Mark in all World Cup matches, for a total of 7 goals. Chosen in the XI ideal of the World Championship. Eric Batty XI.

Johnstone (Scotland-Celtic): League champion and finalist of the European Cup. It highlights the great game that eliminates Fiorentina in the quarterfinals and its exhibition against Cooper in the semifinals of the European Cup. However, in the final it is not up to par. It is included in the ideals of Goal magazine and Top Eleven Great Britain (Rothmans).
Keizer (Holland-Ajax): Win the league and the cup of Holland and is a semifinalist in the FA Cup. He scored 18 goals in the league, but his participation with his team was very low.
Kindvall (Sweden-Feyenoord): 14th in the Golden Ball rankings. Win the European Cup, proclaiming himself the top scorer with 7 goals. A goal from 3 minutes from the end gave Feyenoord victory in the European Cup. Despite suffering a single loss in the entire league, Feyenoord finished 2nd. In this championship gets to score 23 goals. The Sweden coach calls him for the most important matches. Score the two goals against France that qualifies Sweden for the World Cup. He defended the colors of Sweden in the WORLD CUP, representing a lot of danger but no luck with the goal.
Lee (England-Manchester City): 14th in the Golden Ball rankings. Win the European Cup Winners In that competition he scored 6 goals, only surpassed by Lubanski. Magnificent in the final of that tournament. Much worse the City in league, although it contributes 13 goals to its equipment.
Lubanski (Poland-Gornik Zabrze): Finalist of the Recopa and top scorer of the competition with 7 goals, including several goals in the semifinals. He is elected third in the Eastern European player of the year. Play 7 matches out of the 9 that Poland plays (6-1-0) scoring 4 goals.
Mas, Óscar (Argentina-River Plate): 2nd in the National Championship of 1969 and in the Metropolitan of 1970. Mazurkiewicz (Uruguay-Peñarol): Surely the honor of being the best goalkeeper of the season with Banks is disputed. Finally he was chosen in the ideal WC XI. In the 4th place of Uruguay in the WC had great importance the stops of this goalkeeper. Before, he played a great game in the game that qualified Uruguay against Chile (2-0). With the Peñarol, champion of the South American Recopa of 1969 and subchampionship in the Copa Libertadores and in the league.
Mazzola, Sandro (Italy-Inter) 8th in the Golden Ball. He was a finalist in the World Cup, participating in almost all the matches of the Italian national team, but several incompletes. The critics were divided regarding their performance in the world championship. Eric Batty was one of the supporters of his game by including it in his XI. With Inter he gets 2nd place in the league.
McNeill (Scotland-Celtic): League Champion and finalist of the European Cup. One of the best players of Celtic, was awarded with 7 votes in the Rothmans Golden.
    Mifflin (Peru-Sporting Cristal): Make a good W.C.
Moore (England-West Ham): Silver Ball. Despite the rough incident in which he was involved in Colombia, he managed to make a formidable World Championship. XI "Goal", XI of Fussball Woche, Eric Batty XI. In the Top Eleven Great Britain (Rothmans) (22 votes) which means that all the judges voted him in the ideal team. However, his team does a poor league championship, remaining in 17th place. Play 12 of the 13 games with England with 8 wins.
Muller, Gerd (Germany-Bayern Munich): Golden Ball with 59% of the votes and Golden Boot (38 goals in 33 matches). Get the third place in the WC; he is the top scorer of this event with 10 goals in 6 games. Bronze Ball WORLD CUP 1970. Play the 13 games that Germany plays this season (10-1-2) with 12 goals. In the XI of Fussball Woche, XI WORLD CUP 1970, XI "Goal" and Eric Batty XI. 2nd best footballer in Germany. International class of Kicker in the 2nd semester of 1969 and world class in the 1st of 1970. With Bayern he gets 2nd place in the league, but he is eliminated in the 1st round of the European Cup.
Muntyan (USSR-Dynamo Kiev): Play 15 of the 16 matches of the USSR. Good level in the World Cup.
Netzer (Germany-B. Monchengladbach): 1st in the league. Best midfielder in the Bundesliga for Kicker and in the team of the year of that competition with 11 weekly appearances. However, with Germany only played a friendly, which, by the way, ended with defeat against Spain.
Osgood (England-Chelsea): Win the FA Cup and is 3rd in the League, with 23 goals. However, he had very few minutes with the England team.
Overath (Germany-Koln): He was one of the most outstanding players of the World Championship, with whose selection he finished in 3rd place. Play 12 of the 13 games that Germany plays this season (10-1-1), with 3 goals. The Kicker magazine places him as Kicker's world class in the 2nd semester of 1969 and in the 1st of 1970. This same publication includes him in the Bundesliga year team, with 7 presences per week. He has 12 goals in 29 league games, his record-setting record. He is declared third best footballer in Germany. It is included in the XI of Fussball Woche. All these merits justify his 5th place in the Golden Ball ranking.
Pele (Brazil-Santos): "O Rei" remains on his throne to play a key role in achieving his third World Championship, scoring 4 goals and also winning the Golden Ball of this tournament. In November marks his goal number 1000, event that resulted in an impressive media storm.
Piazza, Wilson (Brasil-Cruzeiro): Champion WORLD CUP 1970. In the XI WORLD CUP. 2º classified in the Roberto Gomes Pedrosa of 1969 and in the Mineiro Championship of 1970.
Riva (Italy-Cagliari): Bronze ball. He is the main hero in the historic victory of Cagliari in the series A, proclaiming himself as top scorer. Best DBS Calcio rating of the Italian league 1969-70. He participates in the 10 matches of the Italian national team, in which he also scores 10 goals, 3 of them in the WORLD CUP. His main achievement with the national team was the subchampionship of the World, in which he could not fully confirm the expectations he aroused. It appears in the ideal eleven for Goal magazine, for Fussball Woche and in which Eric Batty made for World Soccer.
Rivelino (Brasil-Corinthians): Another of the highlights of the World Championship champion team. It integrates the ideal eleven of the championship and the ideal selection of 1970 for Eric Batty.
Rivera (Italy-Milan) 10th in the Golden Ball. His scarce presence in the 1970 World Cup was very controversial. In the Italian system, Mazzola was better ... Despite scoring the final goal in the semifinal, almost the entire final on the bench of substitutes. Although in league, Milan gets a modest 4th place, wins the Intercontinental Cup. The collaborators of Fussball Woche placed it in the European XI of 1970.
Rocha (Uruguay-Peñarol): 4th in the World Cup. One of the main elements of the Uruguayan squad of the World Cup that was injured in the 13th minute of the first game, unable to continue the rest of the tournament. With the Peñarol, champion of the South American Recopa of 1969 (in which he was his top scorer) and runner-up in the Copa Libertadores and in the league.
Schnellinger (Germany-Milan): With his goal forced the extension in the semifinals of WC against Italy, which led to one of the most memorable sports battles in the history of football. He finished with his selection in third place, making a good tournament. Win the Intercontinental Cup in which he excelled with a great game in the first leg. Kicker world class in the 1st quarter of 1970.
Seeler (Germany-Hamburg): 10th in the Golden Ball. He was elected footballer of the year in Germany with 356 votes ahead of Muller, with 123.
