tbf, hardly any of them are covering U20 WC with WWC and Nations League/friendlies getting the priority. one liners.. and that's about it except if their teams are part of a game (of which, is no different to Korea or Japan).
If SK will win this WC the news will be loud and a lot of football fans will recognize it and probably someone will try to make some excuse for the "western" debacle. Maybe some dude will finally give credit to the AFC instead of criticize that there are too many asian spots in the senior WC. The same will be not with a ukrainian victory that would be seen as a Greece2004 revival.
Maybe but I think most will forget it ever happened & focus or move on to U21 Euros as far as youth tournament is concerned.
Just knew this was coming at some point. A petition to grant military exemption to the Korea U-20 players is now on South Korean president office website 🤓https://t.co/z18ets1D9v— Steve Han • 한만성 (@realstevescores) June 12, 2019
nah. not gonna happen. They made it clear WC 2002 will stay as the only exception for the sake of fairness for other sports. The whole nation was celebrating bc of WC 2002. It was just so special... No one was against the special exemptions given to the players.. This U20 tournament? not really.. There r already ppl who are "outraged" by this petition. If they get special exceptions, there will be ppl who ask for exemptions for BTS.. for faker.. for geniuses in science, arts, math... etc...
If we use contribution to the country as a metric, IMHO BTS members deserve exemption more than anyone.
Out of topic, but he's not wrong. BTS brings $3.6 billion a year to South Korea https://nypost.com/2018/12/18/k-pop-band-bts-brings-3-6-billion-a-year-to-south-korea/
Just to reiterate, I do think much of the Korean public will support that in the short term due to the euphoria of winning it all. However, it's not going to happen. Equity/meritocracy/fairness is a big deal in Korea these days. The archery/speed skating/any non-baseball/soocer federation is going to complain that their athletes don't get exemption despite being world champions in their respective fields. They'll say the government is disrespecting the "unpopular" (비인기 종목) sports and showing favoritism to soccer/baseball. That's what happened after the baseballers got the special exemption after the 2006 WBC. All the other sporting federations complained. The general mood amongst the Korean public was one of support(in the short term at least). The Asian Games/Olympics have multiple sports which means that exemptions are given in those events.
Unlike the Senegal game where the defense couldn't keep concentration, last night they were able to maintain it much better. I can remember only 1 massive screwup, and that was the backpass that led to Campana hitting the crossbar above a stunned Yi Gwang-yeon. Other than that, the defense was well-versed in using numerical superiority to swarm the Ecuadoran in possession, and there was often a spare man to take away loose balls in the danger zone. The LWB position turned from the greatest weakness to greatest strength for Korea. Choi Jun was willing to cross with both feet, and attempted to switch play a few times, too.
Vietnamese origin with a Japanese flag who feels like a Korean. You're one mysterious man, aren't you?
I'm mysterious as well. Croat, but with a somewhat Italian sounding name and last name. I support Korea out of this unreal admiration for teamwork, justice and doing everything for one's own country. (Add in an interest in history and cool anthems). In football, my interest was sparked by the 2002 tournament. I tended to pick teams like Korea and Japan in video games, too.
as a Vietnamese I have always supported Asian teams and more precisely Japan and Korea because they are the best in the continent with a better interest for Japan in relation to personal choices. I am free of any political conflict, when I see the won Korea I am super happy, when I see Japan do good things I am happy too. so don't be surprised that I feel Korean when I see it in the final. limit if I could have put Vietnam, Japan, Korea in my flag I would not have hesitated but unfortunately we can only choose one choice! others will say why I did not choose Vietnam as flag bah there it is still a personal choice because in football I prefer Japan and Korea than Vietnam
Regardless of the final, LKI, at 1 goal 4 assist with many chances created, might win Golden/Silver/Bronze Ball... to join likes of Messi Pogba Griezmann Aguero Milinkovic-Savic. Good track record for success in their career.
I accept the validity of arguments pointing to fairness and meritocracy. In fact, these traits are something I like Korea for- over my own country. On the other hand, a win in the final of a U-20 WC overshadows success even in the footballing section of Asian Games. The competition is global, and thus, a possible win on Saturday has massive implications.
I blame baseball for "no more special exemptions". The govt stopped making any special exemptions after ppl, esp those in unpopular sports like archery, started complaining after baseball players got special exemptions for advancing to semi-finals in WBC.. Ppl are now even saying there should be no exemptions for winning Asian Games after the previous one mainly bc of the stupid baseball team. In my opinion, they shud just make special metrics that allow everyone to get special exemptions if they get enough points.. EDIT: apparently they are gonna announce some changes in July. Please dont fk it up.. "정부와 국회 등에서는 병역특례 제도의 존치 여부를 둘러싼 논의가 이어져 왔고, 국방부는 오는 7월 예술·체육요원 병역특례 제도의 존치 여부를 포함한 제도 개선안을 마련해 발표할 예정이다."
