ESPN... doesn't have any games, does it?

Lalas was the best Teletubby, I heard from John Strong she was in 174 episodes during the late '90s

Fox's coverage will be "more international" this year, they say.

I was hoping to hear something about 4K coverage, since the MWC was available in 4K via Fubo and an app for Hisense TVs. But I haven’t seen any mention of it yet. The nice thing about the 4K steams is that they were the international broadcast so you didn’t have to listen to Fox’s talking heads.

Fox and Telemundo have exclusive rights in the US and they will broadcast/stream all the matches on FOX, FS1, FS2, the Fox sports app and Telemundo. ESPN is not covering or broadcasting any WWC matches at all.

I "think" the Fox sports app will stream every match no matter which channel it is broadcast on. I do remember reading that every match will be broadcast/streamed live. I suspect that it will be much like last year's WC in Russia.

The broadcasters will suck but that is to be expected as they will be the same as we have seen from Fox in the past so expect a LOT of near meaningless side drivel but that can mostly be ignored. I also expect there will be a LOT of cut aways and replays while play is going on as Fox has no idea how to broadcast soccer. Telemundo's announcers "might" be better and I might give them a try if Fox gets too bad. My Spanish is just OK and their announcers are lightening fast so I might miss some talk that I wish to hear.

I wish there were reliable broadcasts available in the US that used a more "English" style of commentary but that is beyond hope so I will live with what they give us. At least all matches are going to be shown unless some news happens that overshadows everything even on the Fox networks. Like Britney Spears getting an infected hangnail.

I'll try and find a BBC stream using a VPN.
The American commentary style is very tiring.

My problem is they don't shut up. I will say that US commentators are very good at "small talk." In fact that is all the "talk" they seem to know.

BTW: I know it is common usage but "American" means from any of all of Canada, Mexico, Central America and South America. It is an almost meaningless irritant but to me in feels important and using America when one really means "The United States" just seems imprecise.

Please don't take that personally this was just an opportunity to express my slight irritation that is really fueled by my slight OCD.

Well the problem is there is no English word for a collective group of inhabitants of the USA (Spanish does have "estadounidense," though I'm not sure how much that is in actual usage by Spanish speakers in the US). It's a bit like the EU. There's no term for an inhabitant of the EU that distinguishes them from inhabitants of European countries that are not-EU member states. My guess is that the coiners of the name "United States of America" did not envision the country developing into such a strong central government where the people would identify more by the country name than by their state name (I mean, "United States of America" is really more of a description than a name).

Oh, I totally agree on this.
In fact, I was having the same thoughts a few years back.
I tried figuring out when citizens of the U.S. started being referred to as "America."
Was it people withing the U.S. or people outside the U.S. who branded the colonies as America?
In either case, I concluded that most people here "consider" themselves as "Americans."
Further, most people outside this country "refer to" us as "Americans."
Therefore, I realized it's a moot point, a pet peeve I'll have to live with.
Although, whenever we'd visit our relatives in Europe, and there was a lot of "anti-American" sentiment in the news over there (especially in the 90's), we'd say we were from "The States." LOL!

American is used to describe United State's citizen. American is never used to resident's of the Western Hemisphere, generally. I defy you to post an article that references someone as being "American" meaning from the Western Hemisphere. It is so imprecise as to be almost meaningless.

Get the English language media of the world (England, Canada, Australia, South Africa) to stop using American to refer specifically to of origin in the USA.

In my experience, Latin Americans usually say "Norteamericanos" to refer to people of the United States, but that term might occasionally be used to include Canadienses. I've been corrected by Latinos when I called people of the United States "Americanos." We are Americans too, they say.

Estadounidodenses is a cumbersome term that appears in print, but rarely in everyday speech.

So, I suppose the most accurate and least objectionable term for people of the United States would be "North Americans." Although I don't know what our Canadian friends would think of that.

Here in Italy, we commonly use "Americano" to refer both (unaccurately) to an US citizen and to someone from the whole continent.

We also commonly use "Statunitense" when we want to make clear we're talking about USA (for instance, in official media, "Statunitense" is much more used than the generic "Americano", although in everyday conversations "Americano" is the default form).

    ANYWAY

    Telemundo's ad - dramatic

    Fox's ad - international

Dunno if Generic United FC is actually a real country, but the U.S. showed them a thing or two, in that ad.
I'll not repost the 'Goliath' one, but just realized... it should've been GOAL-LIATH! [IMG] #gimmeajob

If I remember what I read correctly all US matches are on Fox and most of the other teams appear on Fox or FS1. I think I remember that it was said that only some "overflow" where there are more than one match at the same time (match day three) will be on FS2 but it also said "scheduling subject to change" so that is possibly going to impact some matches.

We do not, I believe, need to worry about Gold Cup or other sports events because of the scheduling not overlapping even though the Gold Cup is also on Fox channels. Weekend matches might be exceptions for this as well since sports dtarting times may be scheduled earlier.

Of course Fox is not known for being "soccer friendly" and they are known even less for being "women's soccer friendly" so choices may well be driven by cultural bias and gender bias but we can hope that the actual impact of that will be minimal.

Or, you know, every other country in North America. And since this is a soccer forum, it's especially strange to exclude Mexico when it is part of NAFU.

The only place I hear that term used is the UK (and maybe Ireland). But really that's even worse, since there are countries with states all over the world. Germany has states. India has states. Brazil has states. Australia has states. OK, so call it "The North American States"... Well, Mexico has states (in fact it's official name is even "Estados Unidos Mexicanos").

Yeah, but they are "the states" whereas we are "The States."
You could also say the "U.S." or the "USA."

But few of those have the world states in the name of the country.
Germany is a Federal Republic (Bundesrepublik), Australia a Commonwealth, Brazil Federative Republic. And since they all control all the territory normally associated with the geographical area are mentioned in the name there are no reason to anything else for them (the last part include Mexico).
This is only a naming problem for units with names that claim more than the areas they actually posses. As for example EU, USA, the two Koreas etc. Which if possibly is solved with changing the namne used to North-, South-, East-, West- the area in question which pretty much leaves only EU and USA as a problem. Neither have defined a common namne for their citizens which is a bit hard to correctly name groups of them without cheating and using the names for inhabitants from that continent.

And few countries have the word “America” in them and yet here we are. (If you want to change the framework of this entire argument into what’s in the country’s name then that kinda defeats the whole purpose of the argument in the first place)

Wow, I did not really intend to set of such a firestorm. I just wanted to express that I do not fee that "America" is really the best way to reference the USA. But to express my preference it would be to use "The United States" as that is not ambiguous as far as I know. If it is then we can go all the way and say/write "The United States of America."

As far as referring to the people that live here why not "US Citizens" or "US Residents" or any of the possible derivations thereof.

I just stated a preference and I even said that I knew that "America" and "American" were common usage.

Personally I think it seems that it is a bit of a lack in English sort of like the missing single word for multiple people. Somehow y'all or "yous guys" just seems to lack a bit of formality and understanding. Maybe we should call a grouping of people the same as we call a grouping of sharks (No, it is not a school) because it is what having a lot of people together send to our (at lest my) spines.
It seems more info is needed:

Not really. It neither sounds or looks like "The United States" even if pronounced with a strong French accent.
