    Clausura 2019: Who'll win, please tell us @Regulus Tera, @Philip J. Fry, @Mr. P Mosh, @Hugo Sanchez, @Smallchief

It's playoff time - videos are on Televisa Deportes and the LigaMX Youtube, and SBnation did a league guide.

The spring regular season ended like this:
    Group 1
    [IMG]
    Group 2
    [IMG]

In January, week 5, Tigres v Rayadas was as spectacular as ever

    Tigres UANL 1 - 1 Monterrey (Martínez 24' - Cadena 95')

Chivas Guadalajara were surprisingly eliminated in Group 2, losing to Tigres 2-1 in April, and León took 4th place ahead of Chivas. Their week 9 match is online:

León vs Chivas Guadalajara (full), 25 Feb 2019
    - www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6tGT8_UJ5Q

América won Group 1 with 12 wins in 16 games, ahead of Pachuca (2nd) and Puebla (3rd), who América beat in week 13.

    Puebla 0 - 2 América (Cazares 18', Espinosa 65')

We've just had the first leg of the quarterfinals:

In Mexico City, UNAM's lead was overturned by Desirée Monsiváis of Monterrey, and León v América attracted about 30,000 fans:

    León 0 - 1 América (Espinosa 79' pen.)
    - youtube.com/watch?v=zxqDcjPUaFE
    [IMG]

    UNAM [white] 1 - 2 Monterrey [blue] (Santamaría 57' - Monsiváis 67', 78')

The quarterfinal 2nd leg games are from today until Monday.

19 teams for the season 2019/20 from July, the league says.

[IMG] Atlético San Luis Femenil will join the women's Liga MX.

And the league will be a single division. Top 8 teams go to the playoffs (Liguilla).

"In Liga MX Femenil, the group format [2 groups] will vanish and each team will now be allowed to field six players older than 25 and six U.S.-Mexico dual-citizens. Previously, only players born in Mexico could feature in Liga MX Femenil. The 2019 Apertura season will also begin on July 19." - (fmfstateofmind)

I could never tell the logic of the 2 groups - were they regional? Or based on the previous tables?

That's an interesting change of direction. I followed the MX Liga the first couple of seasons then it dropped off my radar. My interest waned as Chivas Femenil waned. I especially liked watching Tania Morales -- she with the wild hair -- play.

So, now we'll have some gringas on the teams. And more old pros. Good news, I think

I'm no sure how the groups were originally decided, but the were static between all four half-seasons save for Morelia being bumped when the league went from 16 to 18. I think it's semi-regional, with a fairly strong north-south split save for Tijuana of all teams being in the southern group.

(From the Chivas v Tigres 0-0, in February)

I suppose Chivas are in a blip – they only just missed the playoffs. The club has released the coach, Luis Manuel Díaz, and they spoke to Roberto Medina (ex-Mexico coach who lost out in 2018) but didn't choose him.

Sensationally, the new Chivas coach is Ramón Villa Zevallos, who leaves the champions Tigres after less than a year as their coach.

USA TV ratings for Liga MX femenil.

They are top popular teams (Monterrey Classico and America) but very good numbers relatively speaking.

It's the most entertaining league, bar none :) It's good that they televise a lot of it (and important).

Hey kids, check out these goles! [IMG]

    Pachuca 3 - 1 Cruz Azul | Apertura 2019 - Jornada 8
    - www.youtube.com/watch?v=i77PuLNdhRM
    [IMG]

Goals: Ana Paola López 20', Viridiana Salazar 77', Norma Gaitan 86' - Itzel Cruz 48'

Also in week 8, the intense Nuevo León derby:

    Tigres UANL 3 - 2 Rayadas Monterrey | Apertura 2019 - Jornada 8
    - www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNrHx8PZxYs
    [IMG]

Liliana Mercado 45', Katty Martínez 60', 63' - Diana Laura Evangelista 9', Mónica Monsiváis 49'

After week 9, the midway point, Pachuca were still in front on 22pts, Rayadas had 21pts, Tigres 16, Atlas/Toluca 15, Tijuana/América 14.

And a four-way tie for the 8th playoff place!
    Querétaro/Chivas/Cruz Azul/Morelia 13pts

    Here's why:

(Warning: GAME OF THE DECADE and COMMENTATOR OF THE CENTURY)

    Cruz Azul 3 - 3 Chivas Guadalajara | Apertura 2019 - Jornada 9

The Houston Dash are now 1-1 vs LMXF competition, and LMXF registers is first win in three tries vs US clubs, as an early goal against Tigres was undone by two late goals against the Dash, the second of which was a penalty. Would love to see some more competition between the countries.

Not sure if this will affect Veracruz Femenil, but their brothers the men's team have unpaid wages and held a bizarre protest yesterday: they stood still for 4 minutes and let Tigres score 2 easy goals.

Veracruz Se Deja Anotar 2 Goles Contra Tigres

The lesson is, you must pay your players, or they'll do something stupid.
Or, you can pay them and they'll still do it, like in the U.S. men's league

Back in Liga MX Femenil now, we're nearing the Apertura playoffs:

Week 10: The first Clásico Nacional in Mexican women's football since 2017, with the two teams fighting for the lower playoff places:

    Chivas Guadalajara 4 - 2 América - (Rodríguez 36', Morales 43', Castillo 48', Montoya 55' - Espinosa 64', 65')

Also in the mix to reach the Liguilla, the former leaders Pachuca drew 2-2 with Atlas, and more in the week 10 report.

Week 11: Tigres' first loss of the season, at Pachuca

    Tuzos Pachuca 3 - 2 Tigres UANL (yellow) - (Salazar 39', Ocampo 83, 87' - Martínez 43', Belén Cruz 51', [IMG] Cortés 33')

A stressful 4th-vs-5th game, not helped by Atlas hitting the bar as the commentator did an impression of The Bee Gees

    Atlas 3 - 0 Toluca - (Iturbide 16', 41', María Pérez 87')

Necaxa are still last, despite a good effort v mid-table Puebla

    Necaxa 2 - 3 Puebla (blue) - (Brianda Escobedo 35', Brenda Pedroza 76' - Ivonne Najar 49', Maria López 85', Andrea Ortega 90')

Week 12: Another win for Chivas to rise in the standings. They're now 6th but with games in hand, could go 4th ahead of Toluca

    Toluca 1 - 2 Chivas Guadalajara (blue) - (Saavedra 24' - Barrientos 17', Jaqueline Rodríguez 52')

Week 13: Important win for the former champs América, who are 7th but also with enough games in hand to go 5th:

    América 2 - 1 Pachuca - (Espinosa 35', Lane OG 59' - Salazar 7')

Week 14: Monterrey are top of the league now, with a strong record of 11 wins and 2 defeats. The league's top scorer Monsiváis has 14 goals already, after she led the Apertura last year with 13.

    León 1 - 3 Rayadas Monterrey (blue) - (Muñoz 90'p - Monsiváis 42', Evangelista 65', 72')
    - youtu.be/27QSAO-PeHQ / Week 14 report

    5 weeks to go: Monterrey have 33pts, Pachuca 29, Tigres UANL 28, Atlas/Toluca 24, Chivas Guadalajara 23, América/Tijuana 22, Cruz Azul 20

2019 Apertura, how will it end?
    Starring THE SINGING COMMENTATOR

Week 15: A win for Pumas UNAM, who ended the year down in 14th - but this loss was ruinous for León who also missed the playoffs, ending 11th in the Apertura.

Week 16: After their early-season promise, Cruz Azul were unable to recover from this result - they finished 10th, Querétaro 13th

    Cruz Azul 1 - 1 Gallos Querétaro - (Alejandra Curiel 65' - Alejandra Tapia 29')

Xolas Tijuana are in the playoffs as the 7th-place finishers! It's their best season in the Liga MX so far. Tijuana scored only 1 point in their final 3 games, so this win at fellow northerners Juárez proved to be vital:

Week 17: Tigres stormed to the playoffs with 8 successive wins to finish 2nd - will they repeat as champions? América ended in 4th place, 11 points behind Tigres.

This game was Atlas's key win in reaching the playoffs - they lost in wk18/19 but snuck in, in 8th place. UNAM scored after 17 seconds, not far off the league's fastest goal, Andrea Villalobos' 11-second goal for Necaxa in 2018.

Meanwhile, the 1st-placed Monterrey beat Chivas Guadalajara, one of two results that denied Chivas a top-4 berth.
