His Hungarian father played in the old North American Soccer League and the MISL. He played for Hungary at the international level as well!
Wait till he gives up a few more 35 yard FK goals... he'll be dressing up as Kojak for halloween in no time.
Thanks for the correction. I would have assumed he had a Hungarian grandfather. I wonder if Hungary was ever interested in him.
Actually, I screwed that up. Peter Horvath is his dad and an ex MISL player. But I believe he is originally Hungarian. Sorry about the mistake! I was thinking Joe Horvath was his dad at 1st, who did play in the NASL and MISL and for Hungary. Ethan''s dad Peter is an ex US indoor pro though!
Genk and Brugge finish 72nd and 73rd in Club Elo's rankings of best clubs in Europe, for whatever that's worth.
So as a percentage of Clean sheet vs games played he was same as Bolat plus he had better champions league performance so he was number 1 keeper !
Leko is out. Bedankt Ivan Leko!MEER | https://t.co/yTJqwJwOp0 pic.twitter.com/pFJmy8fQeM— Club Brugge KV (@ClubBrugge) May 21, 2019
I told you....next will be Letica the #2 keeper. Horvath will be #1 and deserves it. He will also get a real keeper coach that will help to develop him. Current keeper coach never developed him no film work etc !
Bedankt Ivan Leko! They forgot to insert the LOL emoji. Or maybe the doing-this-through-gritted-teeth one.
Not a chance Bono can’t even start for Toronto anymore. Ethan is their number 1 and will enter the season in that spot.
I concur. But I assumed the interest in him (a year ago) was as a no.2 Good on Horvath. He earned it. He was patient and took his opportunity. Do you really feel they'll dump Letica? They paid a few million for him. I'd imagine they wanna recoup it.
https://readliverpoolfc.com/2019/05/22/club-brugge-confirm-interest-in-simon-mignolet/ this makes things far more interesting.
Mignolet has two years left in his contract, 'Pool paid nearly £10m for him, and must be on high wages. I doubt Brugge has the cash.
Board is getting roasted because of the decision not to prologue the contract even though this was expected. They are trying to bring in Philippe Clement, coach of Genk this year - who played for Brugge for ten years and was an assistant coach for six. If they don't succeed they will have an angry fanbase to start the season and the new coach will feel a lot of pressure. Not a great footing to start the season if that would be the case
The English know Yanks produce good keepers, so even if Brugge buys someone to be their #1 (doubtful) and send Ethan to the bench, there must be some EPL team interested in swooping in for him.
As I predicted Letica will be gone only came in for to Leko being Croatian like Letica. As L.Viking shared Clement is now the coach. He was at Brugge as asst coach when they signed Ethan and he is high in Ethan so he will be number 1 to start season and will bring in someone to be his back up. Sorry to all the Ethan haters. I still say yes he has faults like all keepers do just look at De Gea ! What you can’t deny is he is a winner, has competitive grit, does not back down from a challenge. Came back from being made the #4 keeper after 3 months under the crazy Leko to be the #1. How does a coach who wins league and takes 2nd next year not keep his job trust me he is crazy and board finally realized that & cut him loose. Horvath has won the Norwegian league and Belgium league titles and has played in 20 champions league / Europa league games shutting out Dortmund, Monaco, & Athletico Madrid playing in environments like Dortmund, Femerbache, Ajax and Celtic on the road. Please tell me which 23 year old American keeper can match that ?
His grandfather and grandmother were from Vienna Austria and were Austrian citizens who immigrated to US in 1955. His great grandfather was from Hungary and moved to Austria in 1920s. His Dad played as a midfielder/ striker 2 years college soccer in Texas then went pro in the indoor pro league for 4 seasons then league folded. His uncle made US National team in 1980 as a defender and then played 4 years of soccer at Stanford and went to SJ Earthquakes but then league folded. So lots of soccer DNA in the family.
Hungarian citizenship is tough to obtain. His grandfather & father would have had to claim their citizenship or he would have to speak Hungarian (a difficult task). There was one other YA who was going the "learn Hungarian" route -- Jacob Labovitz -- he ended up going to college soccer, though I don't know if the passport is the reason he returned.
