Latest attendance figure Mid week will be a challenge to overcome for the league. I'm curious to see if Thursdays CONCACAF League Qualifier between Valour and Forge will draw better than a Wednesday. Let's not forget that weather was cold this week in Calgary while cold & crap in Hamilton. Warmer weather should help I think Mother's day was a bad idea. They should have had a triple header on the Saturday instead. Many commented that they were override by the wife and had plans with mom. Edmonton playing the same day as the 1st day of mamateur soccer (so we've been told) might have been a bad move as most of those players could have boost attendances. Trial and error to learn from by the league and clubs.
Are we serious doing attendance trackers? It's a brand new league, ffs. Who cares what the attendance is this season.
Best point to start doing it. It can be a good way to track the health of the league and if you don’t track it in the first season you can’t determine that accurately.
^ You beat me to it! They just updated. 4000 (although a suspiciously round number) isn't too bad but isn't great, either, especially for a rivalry match. The rain certainly didn't help.
It was a very good house considering the rain and how cold it was on a sat night (plus a long weekend)...I was there and the people were super excited & into the whole match..hopefully we get better weather tomorrow night as its still cold & raining as I type this.
This brings up a question I have about how the CPL reports attendance. If they are reporting tickets distributed or tickets sold then this is a very disappointing number. This game should have been sold out weeks ago and not been dependent on walk ups who look at the weather. If they are reporting turnstile count, then it is not as bad as some fans may have had tickets but stayed home due to weather despite the historic nature of this game.
Does anyone know the attendance number for the May 22 Canadian Championship 2nd leg game between Cavalry FC v Pacific FC from Spruce Meadows?? I haven't found any number myself.
Try tweeting at Cavalry FC. Back in the day when we actually tracked MLS attendances, that would sometimes work if everything else failed.
Anyone else having the problem that the CPL website won't load the attendance portion of the game reports?
The first spring season is in the books. With the league saying we need about 6000 fans per game to make things fly, this is what we have for average attendances: Hamilton: 8511 Winnipeg: 6689 Halifax: 5937 Calgary: 3480 Victoria: 3394 Edmonton: 3318 York: 2720 (Ottawa, by comparison, is 4327.) On the good side, the teams are out there playing games. Many have also had to deal with some lousy weather. On the other hand, most teams have one outsized crowd for their first ever game that is helping their average and they've now seen what the new team buzz will bring. They'll have to work for things from here. We've also learned that rivalry games are not going to provide occasional huge crowds. So, in the big picture, we have three teams that are doing well. We have four teams that need to improve. York is especially discouraging. They have potentially the largest market but the smallest attendance. They've only once been over 3000 (for their first ever home game) and are the only CPL team to ever be below 2000 and the only team of any kind to ever be below 1000 in a Canadian Championship match. They are also the test case for sharing a city with an MLS team.
Anyone know their median attendances? The Forge, in particular, got17.6k of their 42k attendance from the inaugural game. Still got a not too shabby almost 6k to the rest of their games, but that big first game skews things a bit and isn’t likely to be replicated during the regular season.
Here are the medians followed (in brackets) by the average with the first game removed: Hamilton: 6019 (6236) Winnipeg: 6117 (5822) Halifax: 6021 (5872) Calgary: 3486 (3479) Victoria: 2781 (2967) Edmonton: 3256 (3088) York: 2500 (2335) The sample size is pretty small but, yes, the first game does tend to skew things higher.
