You're saying Romero switched from the US to Mexico because he wasn't getting playing time with the U17s and his club team? Seems like that would be an extremely shortsighted move on Romero's part.

Jesse Gonzalez just admitted that he switched to the USA because he wasn't getting playing time with Mexico. That stuff happens all the time. I'm not saying I know why he switched, I'm just saying it certainly seems like a possibility, given what is known.

Gonzalez played for Mexico at the U20 World Cup and throughout their qualifying. Any lack of playing time was within the senior squad, which is far from Romero's situation. He said he didn't feel comfortable with the USYNTs and that's why he switched. Assuming he also switched because lack of playing time with the U17s is really founded in anything more than "what if".

He's not even a Liga MX bench player right now. He's third goalkeeper. Context says he should stay though. Perez retires in a season and it looks like they're giving the spot to Blanco. Next year he's Blanco runner up and gets to play secondary tournaments like CONCACAF or Copa MX.

    3. Zack Steffen, 27 - Columbus Crew (USA.1)
    4. Eric Lopez, 23 - Los Angeles Galaxy II (USA.3)
    5. Jeff Caldwell, 26 - Virginia (USA.N)
    6. Brandon Austin, 23 - Tottenham (England.1)
    7. Ben Lundgaard, 26 - Virginia Tech (USA.N)
    8. JT Marcinkowski, 25 - Georgetown (USA.N)

Doing a top 100 list of GKs for 2022 is preposterous. What strange media you guys have. It's like if we did a 100 most attractive beings in the Walking Dead universe. By the time we got to like 80 we'd probably be adding animals and the least decimated walkers.

BTW I probably mentioned it here before but to give anyone a briefer on our club,

Perez retires after the CWC (we're going one and out most likely) and Blanco takes over as main GK, with Romero playing the secondary tournaments (Copa MX and I suppose CONCACAF). I don't think they'll hire another GK and it's total BS if they do.

Yep, soccer media in this country is sooo poor and ill-informed or ignorant in general. They have a 45 year old as the last keeper on the list...smh.

He blocked a penalty today with the U20 team.

Heard a rumor during the clarosports broadcast of the main game that Pachuca are after Tiago Volpi. Great GK but IMO the team should invest in other areas. Blanco is good enough to start. Terrible tournament and I'm glad it's close to over for us.

Good news is despite Perez not retiring for another season, it's more of a symbolic move by the team (and apparently it never makes sense to end contracts in winter). Blanco is starting Liga MX matches, which means they're going to stick with him rather than buy another keeper. Abraham might be starting secondary tournament games as soon as next season.

Has two starts with the U-20s so far in the Clausura. He is on the bench for their 2nd Copa MX game which is about to start. He was an unused sub for the first one.

He had 15 starts with the Pachuca U-20s during the Apertura and was on the bench 4 times during the Copa MX.

Who knows what happened with this guy other than he hit a ceiling. He wasn't called for Mexico's recent U22 roster. That roster includes Hernandez and Jurado and both are Liga MX starters so they were no brainers. From here there was really only one GK spot left for everyone else to compete for and it went to a guy at Morelia who ended the season as starter. Rough squad to try to break as a GK.

Well I think a bigger issue that Mexico has continually run into is its struggles with developing young goalkeepers on the club side of things. So many U24 gks just sit and sit and sit, never really getting time on the field. Even Ascenso MX gks are typically older, with younger ones not getting many minutes.

Watching Romero this season, he has the ability but he's very unpolished atm. His angle will get off or he'll overplay his hand. He reminds me a lot of a player who is coming back from a year-long injury. And him returning to the Galaxy really feels like a "well at least this team will give me playing time" sort of move.
