    Highlights Hoi King vs Kitchee

Kitchee's poor season has reached a seriously low point. If they want to salvage something from their season then they must win the FA Cup. But I doubt they can, the team has not found form all season.

Congrats to the team and coach Lee Chi-Kin on guiding them to their first title!

Anyways, I'm very interested to see which players will be called up for the national team next month.

In other news, Happy Valley AA were crowned champions of the Hong Kong First Division league and are most likely to replace Hoi King at the next season of the Hong Kong Premier League.

Happy Valley AA are the 2018-19 Hong Kong First Division League champions. They will be promoted to the HK Premier League next season in place of Hoi King.

Happy Valley AA has strong financial support and is a club with long traditions. Their return will surely intensify the battle for the 2019-20 HKPL title.

    HKPL

Best Union Yuen Long FC 3:4 Eastern Longlions

The battle for the right to use Mongkok Stadium in the 2019-20 season seems settled in Eastern Longlions favour.

Kitchee will retain one of 2 rights to use Mongkok. The second right will now go to Eastern Longlions.

I wonder where HK Pegasus will go next season, if indeed they remain next season?

By the way, there will be nothing to play for in the final round of league matches, as all matters are settled.

Fair play to Tai Po. They made the fewest mistakes all season and deserved to win the title.

In Kitchee's defense, they let more players go than they brought in last summer. Also, they have promoted a number of young players like Cheng Chin-Lung, Chan Shin-ichi, Law Tsz-Chun, Clement Sami Nicolas Benhaddouche, Barak Braunshtain and Harima Hirokane. One thing you can't say about Kitchee is that they have not done their part in nurturing and promoting young talent.

Whether they are up to standard is another matter. For one thing they are still fairly inexperienced.

Lee Chi-Kin did not win with his group of players in their first or second year, did he? Anyway I don't think his remarks are aimed at Kitchee.

Kitchee had the highest payroll in the league last year and continue to have the second highest payroll in the league this year. They still have players under contract like Robert, Kim Bong-jin and Paulo Cesar, the latter of whom was clearly signed in advance of him becoming a naturalized player next season.

In terms of promoting young players, their record is not as clear. Hirokane was recalled from loan midseason and has played twice since, both of which have come in the Sapling Cup. Braunshtain has made five appearances all season, four of which have been in the Sapling Cup.

I should say though, I have nothing against any club based on their budget. In fact, I hope when Happy Valley come up, they'll splash the cash on some foreigners who can help them challenge for the title. I think it's good for the development of all Hong Kong players when the quality of the top flight is increased.

Did you read something about their future? I'm curious as I haven't seen anything suggesting that they won't be back next season.

I am not sure their chief financier Steven Lo will continue to support them. Particularly if the extradition law is passed in Hong Kong as it is likely to happen, he might be gone from HK for good. Going to jail in Macau is not funny.

You may be onto something as Philip Lee confirmed that Rangers will apply for promotion. He says that a higher up at the HKFA informed him that there may not be a sufficient number of clubs for next season's HKPL therefore he decided to apply and what happens.

Also he says that there is a wealthy businessman wants to potentially start a "Kitchee B Team" in the HKPL next season.

AFC U16 championship qualifying Group I

Hong Kong is with Singapore, Guam and North Korea. And we are drawn with North Korea for the umpteenth time. The qualifying tournament will be played in Singapore in September.

For good measure we are also in the same group as North Korea for the AFC U19 qualifiers as well. This time the other two countries are Indonesia and Timor Leste. Matches to be played in Indonesia.

I really hope HKFA will move from the current league system to a franchise system for the HKPL, with regular season and play-offs.

If I ever came to power at HKFA, then I would impose a system of 10 franchises in HKPL, each to the highest bidders who must promise / guarantee a minimum investment of 3 years. Anyone who wants to join in this 3 year period must pay to take over one of the existing franchises.

The top 8 in the regular season will proceed to the play-off season.

Dreams have more or less confirmed to everyone that they will not be back next season. Last week it was revealed that Dreams were late in paying their players. Some players went on strike and as a result, the team only trained twice this week.

After the victory over Lee Man last week, Leung Chi Wing ended his postmatch interview by thanking the fans in Tsing Yi and saying "Until we meet again."

The club itself published a cryptic interview with Chan Wai Ho talking about the future for club football in Hong Kong.

After the match last night, Lam Hin Ting was visibly crying.

Even Leung Chi Wing referred to crisis at the club as "characteristic of Hong Kong football." It would be a shame to lose them, not the least of which is because their social media team is the best in Hong Kong. However, it seems likely that both they and Hoi King will go down and Happy Valley and Rangers will go up.

Hardly something new in HK football. It is also not the first time their financier Lai Tong Kwong walks out on a club.

Those players (and social media team members) who have proved themselves to be good enough this season will surely get a contract with either Rangers or Happy Valley or other HKPL clubs. It is those who did not perform that have to worry.

Wofoo Tai Po is going to Pyongyang to play against 4.25 Sports Club in the AFC Cup Group I match. Winger/striker Igor Sartori is suspended after getting two yellow cards so that is a big disadvantage. But the club has already won the HKPL so they have no concern about the league now. The club also hasn't played for a week and a half so the players are well rested. Hopefully they can come away with a good result.

Kitchee SC Vs Hang Yuen FC - 2:1

Kitchee SC notched up their second win within their group against an away match to Chinese Taipei's Hang Yuen FC. Jorge Paramo TARRES gave Kitchee the lead until Matt SMITH converted an own goal in which both teams are level. However, FERNANDO secured the winner and all three points for Kitchee SC.

Wofoo Tai Po are out of the AFC Cup. Maybe they can let their key players and expensive foreigners go on summer holiday after this Sunday's home celebration. Just let their young players play in the two remaining AFC Cup matches.

Kitchee's chances of progressing from AFC Cup Group I depends not only on themselves beating Wofoo Tai Po on 19 June, but also on Hang Yuen FC beating 4.25 Sports Club on the same day, which is more or less impossible.

I am quite disappointed by the Hong Kong clubs' performances in this year's AFC Cup. I mean last year, amateur club Benfica Macau managed to win 4 out of 6 matches and played OK in a respectable 0-2 home loss to 4.25 Sports Club. (They lost by 8 goals away to Pyongyang but as an amateur club many players could not travel so it is not a good indicator.) You'd expect professional clubs with quality foreigners like Kitchee and Wofoo Tai Po to at least give 4.25 Sports Club a good match, yet they have both been completely outplayed.

Maybe Macau's football standards is not so far below Hong Kong after all.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

It's comical how this is a qualification for the job. It's as if they don't trust anyone with government funding unless they have strong ties with the mainland.

So much for being an apolitical organization.

What does the president even do? It appears that this is an honorary position where a pro-mainland figurehead is appointed...sorry, nominated...so as to keep the government happy. Fok has no qualifications for the job other than being the grandson of former president Henry Fok.

Here's a question: why don't former players run for senior leadership positions within the HKFA? You have people in there like Wilson Wong (politician), Ken Ng (businessman), Pu Kwan Kay (businessman) and formerly, Canny Leung (businesswoman) who all come from the similar sectors. Why isn't there anyone at the top who has actually played the game or tried to make a living as a coach or player?

Simple. The guys on the board are also the pay masters of the players. Never bite the hand that feeds you.

Kitchee coach Chu Chi-Kwong said a small number of players will go on vacation after the HK FA Cup final on 25 May. He said they have played many matches this year and they have earned their summer break. If they stay and play the two AFC Cup matches then they will not get much vacation time, as the club will likely begin new season training at the beginning of July or earlier, as they prepare for the Man City friendly on 24 July.

So Kitchee won't be at their full strength for the two remaining AFC Cup group I matches, which is just as well since they have almost no chance of making it through. They can let their young players gain some experience against Wofoo Tai Po and 4.25 Sports Club.
