Last year’s FCD U17 was another strong team with very solid 01’s. Clearly not all the 02’s would initially make last year’s U17 roster so FCD had a U16 “academy” team where these 02’s trained. Eventually, a number of the 02’s would get rostered for U17 games but for some it didn’t happen until later in the season. Not everyone has the patience to ‘wait their turn’ so to speak, and players would end up taking the path that they believe worked best for them. For those interested, here’s a video of that U16 academy team in a local tournament. You’ll recognize players like Rodriguez, Dunning, Carrera and others. Pepi was also initially on this team.

5 goals too. He may mess around and get the golden ball. All with people wondering how.

Canada a bit fortunate we missed some chances (sitters even) or that could have been embarrassing.

Kayo as the central hub is limiting and a bit tough to watch. Lacks touch on the ball and weight on passes is sub par. But give him space to lumber forward into and we saw what happens. He a straight line freight train. A good strike, and off and running we go.

Busio as a pest was great. Gets MOTM, though scoring on one or two of his chances would have been nice.

Leyva was fine. Didn't have a lot of great passes, but took up spots well defensively. Like the 1st Canada game, the CM was a bit discombobulated at times with positioning when we had the ball. Was smoother when Saldana was sitting allowing Leyva to roam, rather than Leyva having to fit in with Kayo.

Pepi, two really well taken finishes. Now I'm torn a bit as who to start in the final.

Fuentes miscast on the wing didn't work very well.

Tolkin/Cuevas were ok. Tolkin had one or two shaky moments, while Cuevas did do a bit of probing down the right, but to little effect. They return to the bench.

Hernandez-Foster was good. Didn't have to do a lot defensively, but that's fine. The one sequence in the 1st half where he sends a wicked diagonal long ball to the right, then the ball circulates back to him...wicked diagonal ball to the left. Would make Berhalter raise an eyebrow. Maybe keeping him central allowing him to do that easier is a good plan.

Anyway, we can't move Kobe wide now. Gray seems prone to Ream disease. A bonehead pass or two per game that could be punished. Between that and with Alejandre just ok and able to be beaten 1-1, KHF is a CB for now.

Odunze made the one very good save and had little else to do but celebrate. Doesn't look comfortable with ball at feet, but a 6-6' 16 year old probably won't.

I saved Reyna. He's good...but. I admit I might be watching the game with an overly critical bias of him now. I yelled like 5 or 6 times. Dribble dribble. No angle shot. No angle shot. Arrrghhhh. He has to play as he scores goals and creates danger easily at this level. He could help the team much more without the selfish play.

I think/hope the Panama lineup is back for the Final.

He wanted it on his left foot, scoring empty netter from 5 yards with the right is difficult.

Halfheartedly watching MEX-HAIT. 0-0 at half.

Nice to hear some crowd noise. My son and wife both separately kind of made fun at me for watching these games (in Spanish no less) after seeing the crowds for our games.

He needs a diet. Very chubby. Does anyone really know if this Mexico team is a squad rotation with some starters and bench or all 2nd team benchers?
Not impressed by them in the first half vs Haiti.

Gotta admit I was worried about this game. Maybe selection bias + old age but Canada has played us tough enough times in regional competitions at the senior level (GC semis 02, GC semis 07, GC prelims 11) that I always get nervous about them as an opponent. Plus they were the only team that even put up a fight against us so far in this tourney.

But the optimistic counternarrative--that the team had cohered nicely since the version that gave up two sloppy goals to Canada in the opener--turned out to be right, and then some. The script was pretty similar as that game, except that this time they didn't give Canada any opportunities on the counter and struck first, not being too impatient about it. That kind of composure looks worlds different than the disorganization that showed in the initial Canada game.

Since those two goals, we have scored 27 and conceded none and IMO continue to look better each game. I don't know who'll prevail in the other semi but I like our chances against either.

    Top notch defending from Haiti.

There's a guy on Facebook with your avatar. Is that you?

Also, that was a really chippy game, but Mexico didn't really trouble Haiti too much. I think we're definitely better than them. We should win this game.

Busio is one of the few (only?) attackers in this squad who usually makes the right play. He gets it off his feet quickly and to the right place. Not tremendously skilled and not a great athlete but his mind allows him to play with grown men.

Noticed that I did not answer the question. When he doesn’t have to create space, his thinking takes over.
