There's some concerning quotes, like him and his friends all rooting for Mexico growing up, and him being in the US setup right now because they've valued him. That's set up for a fickle switch if they don't constantly keep tabs on him, ala JoGo. It should be a priority to snare all these duals who grew up here. They'll be considered American abroad regardless of national team, and I think all players developed here should want to gain respect for US futbol. At the same time you don't want to pander to them at the expense of others who may be more meritorious than them. You gotta pick your spots. I think JoGo was one of the players to do it with. The same is the case with Pepi, Leyva, Saldana(?), and AOC(?). They've all performed well thus far so they've earned attention.
I teach at a majority Latino school and have done so since 2012, back in '01-'04 I did as well (but in the bay area back then). In the entirety of my time teaching Latino students (most of Mexican Heritage) I've met one Mexican-American student who supported the USMNT over Mexico. ONE. That's thousands of students over the years that follow soccer. It is an extreme rarity to have young Mexican-American children who support the USMNT over Mexican. An absolute EXTREME rarity. To some extent I imagine it's not a fun environment to go against the grain (though some always will for that specific reason) but rooting for Mexico is nearly universal amongst Mexican-American immigrant and second and third generation students I've worked with. The fact that he did that as a kid is not surprising in the least and it would've been beyond shocking to hear he or some other prospect actually didn't.
yes, you must absolutely 'pander' to him and other dual nats. this is recruiting. the thinking that every single player wont be affected by recruitment is old-fashioned and plain wrong. not everyone is benefited by dual passports, but those that are, you must 100% recruit just like a college coach. it's incomprehensible to think otherwise.
It's incomprehensible that you get too involved with doing it with dual nationals to the point that you greatly hinder depth and quality, as we should have learned under Klinsmann and Sampson, so you do have to wisely pick your spots when to "pander" as I asserted.
Question: Is it a general rule in youth soccer now that the ball does not need to clear the 18 on a goal kick? My kids quit a few years ago.
And that explains some of the weird drop balls here too. Thanks! The offensive wall player thing is a pretty impactful change...and the handball rule will still be whatever.
Yes it is for all competitions. I believe the compliance date is June 1st, but this U-17 Championship is some of the new rules.
'02 Nico Carrera, @Nico_carrera02, talented FC Dallas Academy CB, and US U17 prospect will receive his US Citizenship next month. I expected him to make a strong push onto the US U17 WC roster.— Joey (@USAprospects) May 15, 2019 The discussion will now be how many of the WCQ players will make it to the WC roster and how many players will be added. Considering the lack of depth at CB the addition of Carrera would be a positive move.
Who are the cuts from this WCQ roster and who would you replace them with at the moment? None of it is easy, IMO, but I'll go: OUT: Jack de Vries, IN: Cameron Dunbar OUT: Axel Alejandre, IN: Nico Carrera OUT: John Tolkin, IN: Mason Judge OUT: Gilbert Fuentes, IN: Moses Nyeman or David Rodriguez or Mario Penagas or Cade Cowell Fuentes is a tough cut for me because he does nice things in flashes and has been pushed out of position by Busio, but unless he can find regular minutes and consistency at Reno, I think another playmaker/winger deserves a shot. I'm still very unpersuaded that Gianluca Busio is a good enough player for this team, but it'd be shocking if Wicky doesn't call him up for the World Cup and I'm fine with that. I also don't love Armour, but he's improved as the tournament's gone on and he looks like a more reliable *defender* than Tolkin.
The dates haven't been decided yet but there's a good chance the World Cup coincides with the MLS playoffs. Not sure what that means for Bello, but it could be an obstacle for him.
I think with Bello back and the bigger mistakes that Gray has had this tournament, I could see Axel staying with Gray being the odd man out. And with Carrera coming in, I could see both dropping. I also disagree on the Fuentes snub
I understand the point you are making, and it has merit, but there's an opposite school of thought that club success does not automatically make someone one of the 21 best players. Some think that players should be picked only based on how they fit into this team, as opposed to what they've done at the club level. I don't think I completely buy into what @zlebmada is saying, not because I think Busio's particularly good. I think its a weak attacking age group, and a player like Busio gets in by virtue of being able to influence goals and his MLS play, but I could understand why someone wouldn't list him in the team. I don't think he's a difference making attacker. I view him as a fringe player. I also don't think any fringe player has locked up a spot for a tournament at the end of the year, so I could see a situation where Busio does not deserve a place on this team.
He's a sixteen year old getting starts from Vermes. Vermes never, ever starts players unless they deserve it. Simply said, I just trust Vermes' opinion much more than anyone here. Indeed, much more than mine. “First off, he’s played very well,” Vermes said. “There’s times where he can start over guys as well. And also, he deserves the experience. He just has great instincts in the game. He’s very intelligent in the way that he enters. The way that the ball goes out of bounds, he knows to pick it up quickly. He just has good tricks of the trade for his age. He’s not getting in there because he’s 16, he’s getting in there because he can play.”
After watching Carrera at the Generations Adidas Cup it confirmed my thoughts he is not at the this level and I would be surprised if he gets on this team. He is at FCD where they play everyone up and make most kid pros and he hasn't played up games, been in a USL game, or been given a HG contract. The eye test says it the most. He and Che benefit from an incredible midfield and good holding mid in Diego.
the concept of writing off or crowning YOUTH players before they are old enough to vote will never not be funny. it's kids playing soccer, man. no one really knows if they'll be good in three years.
