Yep. Toronto has been the obvious destination for Gonzalez for six months now. Unless he's lost all of his foot speed, he'll be a useful signing.
No, Canada... Omar Gonzalez not coming to #TFCLive Liga MX not selling according to sources #MLS— steve buffery (@Beezersun) May 6, 2019
Contract does end in June. He was in LA the other day training with the Galaxy. Former #LAGalaxy center back Omar Gonzalez is training with the club. Galaxy often allows former players to train with the club while in LA. Nothing else to this. pic.twitter.com/VviicsX1bt— Adam Serrano (@AdamSerrano) May 9, 2019
Atlas un-benched him for the final two Clausura games, so he'll probably make the Gold Cup roster. Truth is, the Zorritos looked better when he didn't play.
So basically, Gonzalez's move back to MLS was blocked because Pachuca wanted a transfer fee for the last 2 months of his contract. Especially notable because Atlas's last match of the season was on May 5, and the news that Gonzalez would not be transferred occurred on May 6. LOL, that's devious.
what's his legacy in Liga MX? He won a title so there's that but did he show he was a talented defender?
Pachuca is the kind of club that has to be extremely intelligent with its money in order to hang in there. Hidalgo is one of the poorest states in the country so they only really make bank on ticket sales when we face really popular teams in playoffs. That’s also why our shirts are plagued with sponsorships. I actually wish omar hadn’t dropped in form so badly. The guys we’ve gotten to replace him have all been awful. Robert Herrera was basically a smaller Omar in bad form. And Stiven Barreiro (the guy we have now) is one of the worst defenders I’ve ever seen in this club.
The inept New England Revolution have signed Bruce Arena as their GM & Head Coach. If this had happened 10 days earlier, then maybe MLS would have gotten into the bidding war for Omar Gonzalez that Pachuca needed.
Omar is only able to come back to MLS through the Allocation Order. He will probably join Toronto on a free transfer
It's scary to think Gonzo is likely to be part of the squad for this cycle. And it has nothing to do with that own-goal, he's just not good enough at this point.
Toronto back in play: Sources confirmed to me that #TFCLive has signed U.S. international defender Omar Gonzalez. Deal will be announced this afternoon.— John Molinaro (@JohnMolinaro) June 3, 2019
