If Ferreira was already an American citizen the broader media and soccer fandom would be making a much bigger deal of it. Its not often that we've had 18 year olds that we can count on to score. Other positions? Yes. Forwards? Not so much. Also, if he was doing this in a big MLS market...................... Just a little bit of squad rotation. No big deal. They have a little bit of fixture congestion with 3 games in 8 days. LAFC midweek. By the way, in training Luchi apparently has tried a little bit of Ferreira in other positions. I think this comes about due to the expected crush of international callups. Apparently, Luchi has been trying him in more of a #10 role centrally behind a target striker. Kinda like how Pareja used Urruti at times last season. [perhaps moving to more of a 4-2-3-1 while all of Cerrillo, Pax, and Servania are gone with the U20s.] I don't know if we'll see it in an actual game, because Aranguiz is more likely to play that #10 while Pax is away (with Roberts available as well). But Ferreira does have more playmaking ability than perhaps he's shown so far. I really like Jesus. Lets hope he gets his citizenship in time for Olympic qualifying. Cuz when we look at domestic U23 forwards on Sandon's list above..............how many #9s are there that are scoring goals? Ebobisse and Ferreira.
IMO, the issue is that he is 17 and will be in the 2021 U20 pool. Also, Dest is a stand out RB and if Araujo goes it would be as a backup. Why burn a U-20 spot on a guy who will be one of the studs of the next U20 cycle in a spot where you don't really need him anyway?
I've harped on this quite often. It's a cultural problem in our youth teams. Every day I see kids do some extra shooting after practice. They always do it the same way, one kid is in goal, the other takes the ball and tries to place it in the upper 90. The problem is that this has nothing to do with happens during game time. It's not even very good for free kicks because there is no barrier. I tell my boys quick, accurate shots to the side netting as soon as there is space to shoot.
Because on a team with hopes of winning a championship, or at least hopes of making a deep run in the KO rounds, you need a capable backup at every position.
YWC only allows 21 players. Yes, it's annoying but it's better than the 19 player limit back before 2003. The US, like most nations, takes 3 GKs so that typically means two spots don't have a natural backup.
I think 3 GKs are required, so there's no flexibility there. Otherwise, there's a lot of flexibility. What could be simpler than subtracting a forward and adding a defender? More difficult (and much less logically with this group) you could drop a midfielder for a defender. His father was known as a clever creative midfielder so it does not surprise me in the least bit that he could also be played at that position. But #9 is not only what we need him as for the U23 as you have pointed out but also when qualifying starts for the World Cup. Other than Sargent I don't think we have many good options that can be groomed.
I was trying to figure out someone who was small but scored a lot and the closest I could come up with Romario. So all he needs to do is score about 996 more goals and he will be as good.
everyone's overthinking this. Barrios was out so Badji was used at forward to add a speed option missing with Barrios card sit out. Hollingshead was to be used with Badji but it all fell apart when Badji got injured early. Mosquera was injured later so Barrios and Ferreira are it until Pomykol gets back. Will they have to dip into the super young at NTSC? Can they "loan" Pepi up?
They don't play the same way. David was a stocky creative, move around everywhere type. Jesus has a lot of his father's skill but is not a classic #10 type. He's a clever dribbler near the box but it's his runs in the box that stand out.
The bad thing for most people around here is if he looks anything close to Romario and gets sent to Europe Colombia may be tempted to just call him up before Berhalter does.

Ferreira doesn't have that much of that. He's not going to be a liability in a team that has a lot of creative players, but he's more of a goal scorer than a creative player with flair and playmaking.
I've been surprised at how well he keeps possession and dances around opponents. He also has a very good first touch.
I think it is all relative. For most 18 years old starting in MLS he does seem to have more creative attributes and dance moves than others.
Yup. How bad is the Badji injury? If I do remember correctly, both Twumasi and Atuahene are back in training. One was away getting his green card I think. [There used to be an international roster slot problem, but they should have opened one up when they traded Pedroso.] I think we'll likely see one or both of those guys incorporated in the injuries to both Badji and Mosquera are bad. [Mosquera's for sure looks bad.] I mean, those are both first round MLS draft picks. Both GenAds. Both have suffered injuries that have been roadblocks to inclusion. But at some point they're going to get in the rotation. I don't think we'll have to dip into the attacking youngsters like Sealy.............yet. Although i'm hopeful that we're not too far away from Bryan Reynolds getting an opportunity at right back. If Cannon is called up to the USMNT. Or there's a U23 camp that one or both of Cannon/Nelson go to...............Reynolds is "next man up."
Ramos used to take 7 D, 6 M, 5 F. Last cycle he changed and started taking 6 of each. The way the tournament played out it was probably the right choice. The guy who was rumored to have been added, Ebobisse, turned out to be the second best forward of that squad. It's hard to say that this is the right choice this cycle but I think it's fair to say that defense has not been an area where we have needed to cycle through starters. I think it's also fair to say that this group has a very settled defense through midfield but the ideal group of forwards is an open question.
I know he's not talked about much on this board, because there are better age-eligible players, he's never really been a hot prospect, and RSL has been pretty bad, but I want to mention that Bofo Saucedo has probably been RSL's most dangerous attacker this year. Saturday was the first game all year where he got the start even though Plata and Savarino were both available, and he drew a PK and should have drawn another. He was the most dangerous attacker on the team for RSL and was arguably MOTM. Savarino's the DP we paid a 7 figure transfer fee for, but Saucedo has just outplayed him this year. I doubt he'll ever make the USMNT but he probably shouldn't be totally written off.
You never know. With Two Gold Cups per cycle and no more Confederations Cup incentive to put out the best players every tournament I would not be surprised if MLS flavors of the month have better chances of being called up the year before the World Cup.
With New England hiring Arena as their coach and sporting director, is that a good thing for the thread, or will they spend more on outside players and keep ignoring their academy?
He showed some incredible ability in a few games last year, but was inconsistent. Although I can’t stand his flopping and the attitude he has with other players.
New England has a very weak academy, the last HG player they signed was Firmino, but he's Brazilian. It would be great to see Rennicks and Angking more involved in the team. Jones was very regular so far even though he is not a player from the academy.
Rennicks, Angking, Jones, Bye, Buchanan, Turner, and Firmino is enough of a young player foundation to build off. They're on the verge of being able to recruit the nation and are in position to take time to develop. They aren't winning s**t this season. An old manager who relies on vets was not the right option to pull them out of the gutter. It reeks of desperation, and I hope at least Rennicks doesn't get lost in the shuffle like Mendiola or Villarreal in LA, because I'm really high on him. u20 WC could be big for him.
