Sean Nealis credit with a goal after a Michael Murillo shot deflects off of him. Galaxy vs. NYCFC is now on ESPN. Cuello is on the bench for the Galaxy. Parks and Torres for NYCFC.
Now Aaronson is coming on for Fabian in the 57th minute. So not at full fitness after the injury, but close. Aaronson, Araujo, and Sands are all playing significant minutes today, 2 weeks before the tourney. So no excuse to leave them off.
Ferreira now has 5G 2A in his FDC career in around 650 minutes... for comparison his main competition 26 year old Dom Badji has 3G 2A for FDC over the last two seasons, with around 1100 minutes played. Hey if actually playing mattered Matt Real wouldn't be on the roster!
Twellman says Berhalter might bring Araujo into the first team. I was going to suggest that. Twellman also said he’s on the radar of many European scouts, which anyone could figure out. GBS has shown so far that he’s willing to use young players and te Kloese has done some very good work since being brought in. LA could definitely become the second best academy in MLS at producing first team products if they can keep this up over the next few years.
Kennedy also tweeted that yesterday. One last thought for day on U-20s. I’d be shocked if (healthy) Julian Araujo wasn’t brought in for pre-Gold Cup #USMNT camp (if not on 23).— Paul Kennedy (@pkedit) May 10, 2019
Is there a u-23 camp in early summer too? If so employing Araujo (and Aaronson, Sands) there would be an adequate alternative (it's not like he'd be cap-tied w/ u20 WC anyway). But I haven't heard anything.
Not sure if there's going to be a U23 camp, but it is typical for a pre-GC or pre-WC camp for younger players to be called in. It'll be in DC, so a little easier for Sands and Aaronson to participate depending on their clubs' willingness.
Sands played very well again. Araujo didn’t have much to defensively in the 2H and was more comfortable with the switch back to a 4-4-2. Sent in a couple of very good crosses. One that likely would’ve been an Ibra goal if not for a great play by Chanot.
Araujo was decent, but had some errant passes. His game lacks maturity, but that's to be expected of a 17 year old. That said, his omission from the U20 team is puzzling, as is Sands'. If Ramos had real interest in both of them he would have gotten injury status updates, and both coaches would have told him they're good to go. I'm now going to follow Araujo's Twitter account to see if he changes anything. Right now he has a photo of himself, in U.S. garb, standing next to McKenzie?
For the 7:30 eastern starts: Yueill and Calvillo start for San Jose. DeJuan Jones is on the bench for New England. Josh Perez on the bench for LAFC Parks got 14 minutes off the bench as NYCFC killed the game off. He was playing as a second forward. Trusty went the distance for Philadelphia earlier.
Is there any insight into that decision as well as them both being cut from the U20s? Is them being called to the Gold Cup camp just a side effect of our player pool being terrible and our U20s not being available, or did they "skip" the U20 pool somehow (which seems unlikely)?
