This will wrap up the group stage for The USA. This game is virtually meaningless for The US since we've already clinched 1st place, we just need to avoid cards and injuries.

Can't say a whole lot about this Guatemala team. They qualified for the tournament automatically so we really only have a 2 game snapshot of them. In game 1 they outshot Barbados 20-5 and had 58% of the possession, but they could only score once and choked at the end for a 1-1 draw. THey're clearly a better team than Barbados, but failing to get 3 points against them is still pretty embarrassing. In game 2 they were just outplayed by Canada and lost 4-2.

They're likely headed for 3rd place and going to advance regardless of the outcome, but they could technically be eliminated if Barbados gets a shock result against Canada or if The US really pours it on them.

Next time, please reformat your lineup, as required. For example:

    Las
    Cuevas-Gray-Alejandre-Armour
    Saldana-Fuentes-Freeman
    Reyna-Pepi-AOC

    Thank you.

Well, this game is totally meaningless. [If we assume Canada beats Barbados, then Guatemala is locked into 3rd anyway as well.] Rotate the squad to make sure everybody is as fresh as possible for the upcoming knockout games. Get the win to maintain positive momentum.....................

Big surprise last night as Honduras lost to El Salvador. What is going on with the Catrachos? They also lost to Haiti. So they finished 3rd in their group. That does actually benefit them in the draw as they avoid a matchup with Mexico in the quarterfinal. Still, they're not playing like getting to the quarterfinal is a sure thing anyway.

Half of the draw for the knockout rounds is now set. A couple of interesting games there JUST to get into the do-or-die quarterfinal.

Wikipedia has head-to-head as the first tiebreaker, and wikipedia is never wrong!!!!

Page 22 of the regulations says the tiebreakers in case of 2 teams tied on points are:

    1) Points between the 2 teams (meaning head-to-head) (skip the next 2 points because they pertain to more than 2 teams tied on points)
    2) Overall goal differential between the 2 teams
    3) Total goals
    4) Lots

    upload_2019-5-6_9-46-22.png

It's awkwardly worded, so I can see how you assume the first point is about regular points and then goal differential.

Yeah I think the collective wisdom of BS and Wikipedia is likely right. In which case from the current bracket looks to me like our path in the elimination rounds will begin with Guadeloupe, who I hope to crap we can beat, then the Group H runner up, which means Costa Rica or Panama, who will presumably be much tougher. Bottom line, we'll almost certainly have to beat one of those teams to qualify for the U17 WC.

If the US can't easily beat any of those teams at home, they don't deserve to go to the World Cup.

This is indisputably true. It is a little unfortunate though that in the winner take al QF we will likely face one of the confed's top 4 u17 teams in Costa Rica. If their u17 team is on the order of their senior team, that'll be a tough game. Lord knows Costa Rica has owned us recently, home and away.

Panama just drew with Curacao, so will finish 2nd if CR beats Suriname (likely). So that means we're likely to play the winner of Panama and Guatemala.

I think I've got that right..........................

Actually even if CR draws v Suriname, they will win the group on GD (CR & Panama drew, so no head to head winner; CR has current GD of +3 versus Panama's +2). So unless CR loses to Suriname (vanishingly unlikely though nothing is impossible, esp at this level), the second-place team from Group H will be Panama.

They'll play the third-place team from our group, which is going to be either Guatemala or Barbados. In theory either Guatemala or Barbados could leapfrog Canada but that seems very unlikely given results so far. Guatemala is more likely to finish 3d if they end up on even points with Barbados since Guate is -2 GD and Barbados is -5 at present. That's a lot of goals to make up in one game. And with Canada up 2-0 vs Barbados at the half, now Guatemala looks to need only not to lose by a boatload (presently, 5) to cruise through even w a loss.

Bottom line, we will in all likelihood play one of Panama (likeliest) or Guatemala/Barbados (less likely) in the winner-take-all QF. So yeah, if we can't beat Guadeloupe and then one of those, we don't deserve to be at the u17 WC.

Semis opponent would likely be CR or Canada FWIW.

Agree with you but really the US should walk through this entire tournament to a game with Mexico. I still have a hard time seeing how CR at the full mens level is even competitive with us but that they are.

Not much difference between us and Canada here. Nelson looks like the tournament MVP so far.

This is funny. So we play Guatemala, then kind of a break, and then maybe Guatemala again.

Is this just the link, or is it actually embedded in the thread right now? And if it's not embedded here, would anyone be able to do it?

Just wondering as I'm outside the USA and can't be sure if it's an availability issue.

There's a real lack of anticipation and commitment early on this match. They're a step behind the play and losing most 50-50's.

Far from the squad's strongest lineup, not that it has to be.
