Sam Tojaga is US-born-and-raised but has been at Canadian YNT camps. Apparently been doing well at Akron.

PAPILLION, Neb. – The United Soccer League (USL) announced today it had awarded a USL League One franchise to Alliance Omaha Soccer Holdings, making Omaha, Nebraska the first new market to join League One for the 2020 season. The club will be the only professional soccer club currently operating in the state of Nebraska and will be coached by former University of Nebraska Omaha Head Coach Jay Mims.

    ...

The new team will play at Werner Park, which is undergoing a variety of stadium improvements to support the addition of a second team and sport.

WP is a minor league baseball stadium.

    Good one. An under-served market.

There have been soccer players of note from Nebraska. Jason Kreis is probably the best player to come out of that state...................

I had heard a couple of years ago that Omaha was looking to enter USL at this level, but then it went very quiet. Nice to see that it finally happened. There is a thriving youth soccer culture in Omaha and this is a good level for them to enter the professional community.

These kinds of cities - Boise, Little Rock, Jackson, Omaha - are critically important to making professional soccer thrive in this country. When you make pro soccer thrive in those cities, their top youth players start getting chances at “making it” with the local pro team and, eventually, top local youth players get a shot at playing in MLS - completing the connection of local youth soccer with the pro game.

I apologize if this has been posted and I missed it. Has anyone heard anything else about the USL Academy Cup? It is supposed to be taking place this year. Obviously this is a modest place to start, but I would love to see USL get more systematic and intentional about moving youth players to the first team level - league wide. The one thing that I like about their thinking is that they are looking to develop academies for ALL levels of teams, including semi-pro and it appears that they are making room for an Academy Level below PDL, err... League Two level.

Like every other soccer initiative, we will have to have a “wait and see” attitude as to whether it ever develops into anything. U17 and U13 age groups would not have been my choice.

Don't get why you would do U13, but yeah, I'll watch a couple of the U17 games. It'd be cool to be known as the premier USL academy, although that might just get your team plundered by MLS teams.

For the record, it says it takes place in 2020.

Interesting eclectic mix of clubs. I don’t know if this is going to end up leading anywhere in today’s overcrowded youth soccer scene, but any initiative that encourages lower tier professional and semipro clubs to develop their academies and play other professional and semipro academies, I am all for. The one often made mistake that I hope they don’t make - to try to only play against other professional academies. When you play against non-professional clubs, every league game becomes a scouting trip while you raise the bar of the non-professional clubs through better competition.

I would also like for more youth clubs to develop under 23 teams that the youth players in the club can look up to, emulate and dream of playing for one day. We are going to saturate this country with academies and clubs that lead to adults playing competitive soccer at a high level - whether it be amateur, semipro, lower level professionals, or elite level professionals.

When you have THAT - that is when you have a great footballing nation. I love it when I see stuff like this. It makes me feel like we are on our way. We have a long way to go, but we are definitely on our way.

Thomas Roberts with the game winner for North Texas yesterday. This team is undefeated in League One play.

Let's hope that Pomykal and Cerrillo are called up for the U20 World Cup, so Roberts & Servania move into the 18 for FCD.

Lineup for North Texas (thread eligible players bolded :) ). A reminder that Pepi is with the U17s.

Carlos Avilez; Imanol Almaguer, Brecc Evans (Dante Sealy - 46’), Alfusainey Jatta, Bryan Reynolds; Brandon Servania, Tanner Tessmann, Thomas Roberts; Arturo Rodriguez, Johan Gomez (Cesar Murillo - 75’), Oscar Romero (Bicou Bissainthe - 64’)

Substitutes not used — Zach Schawl, David Rodriguez

I missed this over the weekend. Julian is an 02. I believe his last involvement with USYNTs was a U17 camp in February. [Brother of McKinze Gaines.]

Tormenta FC in USL League One has signed their first academy player:

I believe he is 16. The Savannah/Southeast GA area isn't a hotbed of soccer talent by any means, but a few pros in the past have come from that area (Morgan Brian for example).

On the men's side, there are two (now three!) pros from Savannah: Indiana Vassilev and Nico Rittmeyer.

I don't know. TM doesn't have much info on his contract expiry. Maybe he's not a pro - but he's definitely from Savannah!

Tessmann goal. Seems to be playing a more advanced role due to Roberts with the FCD first team today.

Goal for Johan Gomez. Older brother of Jonathan, and second-leading scorer in U18/19 DA behind Matthew Hoppe. Last US call-up was U16s in September 2016.

Has there ever been three brothers in the YNT system at the same time? Usually, two brothers being good players in the system at the same time isn't a frequent occurrence. I doubt three has ever happened before. Then again, I've never seen the youngest brother play, but supposedly he is a good player. He's a goalkeeper.

The oldest field player that NTX suited up last night was 22 :)
After a little bit of a feeling out period, FCD has basically realized that they can win USL League One games with academy players. I don't know where Dante Sealy was for this one. Not on the bench either.

    Zobeck 29
    Romero 22
    Montgomery 21
    ARod 20
    DRod 17
    Jatta 19
    Imanol 18
    Bonilla 17
    Gomez 17
    Tessmann 17
    Reynolds 17

And yes, Bryan Reynolds is still only 17 somehow.

I don't know, but FCD should sign the older two Gomez brothers as a package deal RIGHT NOW.

I guess the issue is that Jonathan Gomez plays left back. They have two left backs in the academy that are pretty darn good, and keeping Jonathan with the U17s. Bonilla and Hinojosa.

Bonilla would be a sneaky good guess in terms of the next NTX/FCD homegrown signing.

'01 Rapids academy players Logan Hitzeman and Alejandro Padilla made their debuts for Colorado Springs. '00 Hundley also subbed in and '02 Rodriguez started in goal. '01 DCU academy player Jack Villatoro got his first start for Loudoun. '02 Mario Penagos was on the bench for Sacramento, '02 Aaron Cervantes for Orange County, '01 Ethan Bryant for San Antonio.

Hitzeman debuted back in March. The Rapids-Switchbacks relationship has run deeper this year than I expected.

Good to see Bryant on the bench for the first time this season; I've been assuming that he's been injured.

A general question: for anybody who has taken the time to watch Orlando City B, are any of their no-name young players any good? Just against NTX, they started Austin Amer '00 and Moises Tablante '01, and brought Jordan Bender '01 and Luc Granitur '03 off the bench. I'm getting an "FC Montreal" vibe around the team, though.

I heard they tried to sign Johan Gomez to an 2 deal, but its going to require a first team contract. I suspect it'll be the same for Jonathan Gomez, but admittedly, thats my own speculation.
