I am not in the backroom or the locker room. But from the outside, having been around the block even a few german blocks, it looks to me like this:

    Tedesco:

My best young attacking player, heart of my team

    Goretzka free transfer OUT >>
Rudy 28 year old has been BM center back in at $28mm IN <<

A lot of unproven this or that on the cheap from here or there IN.

36 year old veteran soul of my team OUT>>

I am the best coach in the Bundesliga now that Tommy Teuchel is out. And you give me this crap to play a defensive 5-3-2?

    Fine.

So he rolls out a 2-1-3-2-1-1

    and a

    3-1-2-4...

That's a coach saying: F*you and your stupidity.

he took the CL seriously because, how can you not? Those were auditions for the job at Everton, Tottenham, Valencia etc.

i'm sure there are shades of truth to what you have here...

tedesco was a like a good chef with a bare cupboard.

another poster said in this thread something about a "shell game"...I think that is more likely than the idea of being absurd out of protest.

Jurgen Klinsmann was doing a lot of that with USMNT - imo part of the reason you never knew who was going to play or where they would line up on the field under JK was "the element of surprise" - and, while it couldve been better executed - I think that aspect of JK's coaching strategy did have some merit. (as an aside it seems GB is taking the opposite appraoch of letting the whole world know exactly what he will do every game...interesting to see if that bites him in the end)

Perhaps it is a german thing to compensate for a (perceived) lack of talent by mixing up the lineup unpredicatably from game to game?

are there other german coaches besides tedesco and JK that do/did that?

(whatever the case, I think tedesco is a bright coach and he is being unduly dismissed by this board in light of what he had to work with at schalke this year)

What’s was that saying about bear bryant:

Bryant can take his'n and beat your'n, and then he can turn around and take your'n and beat his'n.

I guess tedesco isn’t at that level where he can take lesser players to greater heights.

Looks like David Wagner to Shalke is official

Best one-line summary of any club situation all season.

Tedesco was widely reported to be livid that no succession planning was in place for Goretzke. Without him, last season's successful team has had its gearbox removed, and then they let Naldo go and removed the brakes.

He'll find another club pretty soon. Probably a good one.

Apparently David Wagner is going to be the coach next season. Not sure if that's a good thing for Wagner, but it's definitely good for Schalke - for a while anyway. The real issue is who's going to be Sporting Director, and whether he'll give Wagner the time and player resources needed.

Still wonder if they’ll be able to hold onto McKennie. It’s difficult to shine when the rest of the team does not.

We may not see a Liverpool type of offer we were discussing earlier in the season. Regardless, We just need him somewhere getting consistent minutes at his preferred position, and growing his game.

Plus, it's one of the best jobs an American-ish coach has ever gotten! Congratulations to Wagner, who has had an impressive managerial career to my eyes.

Ha! I have to admit I was thinking the opposite. Great gig for Wagner, will reserve judgment on if it is good for Schalke.

Schalke fans like Wagner because he's, as the English say, "one of the lads." He was there only a couple of seasons, but was part of the team that got the Europa League (back then UEFA Cup) with them. Truth is, he only played garbage minutes, but still, he was there, a permanent bench fixture.

Some express a certain reticence based on the style of play he had with the Terriers. But that team was garbage, Mooy excepted.

It's possible they were in a US camp or two together, that's about it. They both lived in Germany at the same time in the 2000s? I haven't seen any evidence that they're friends, though they have most likely met.

Does anyone know of any interest for Wes from outside Schalke?

I've been trying to find something but I've hit a blank.

Nothing since the Liverpool rumor earlier this year. I love me some Mckennie, but he just ain’t good enough for Liverpool IMO, no shame in that.

Think he’d make sense as a somewhat cheap-ish replacement for Ramsey at Arsenal, but what do I know.

Schalke draw 0-0 and secure their Bundesliga spot for next season. McKennie started and went 90 minutes.

    "hold on?"

The guy who has played every position and locked down none? RB, RCB, DM, CM, ACM, Striker, second striker.

He may develop into a player that can move the ball into the attack, but so far he is continually being moved back on the pitch. You don't do that with your best players.

I think the most important thing for his career is for him to surround himself with very good attacking midfielders so he can learn from them. Right now based on his performances, I would have him as a RB or a roaming #8 charged with gaining back possession.

That’s one take I guess. Not one I share. True, he hasn’t lived caked down one position, but it seems he is a player coaches feel needs to be on the field.

Yeah, I haven't watched every Schalke game, but from the ones I've seen, he's looked unremarkable at worst, which is pretty good given that he's 20, the team was a mess, and he was being moved all around the field. And there have been a handful of games where I thought he was one of the best players on the field for either team.

I have also watched a lot of 04 games. He has been moved around due to injuries and because his coach believes in him. If he was on a team where he could play the above position, which I think is his spot, he would look even better. Hopefully this happens.

schalke bad run of form coincided with his injury. their recent uptick with his return. I am pretty sure he has been in lineup for almost all their points

Lacking a fixed position/role at all affects your market value negatively.

Is this truly reality? There is a constant discussion over CP's position at Chelsea and whether it is L or R or middle and look at his transfer fee.

Right, like how Gareth Bale played as a withdrawn striker, left mid, right winger, and left back for Tottenham in 2012-13 and only commanded a world record fee when he moved to Real the following summer.

All I hear about Wagner is Jurgen Klopp Part 2. On that alone I think this is good for Wes
