All of their '15 guys are still in Liga MX, some playing, some stuck with the reserves. Considering I rank MX right below the Euro Top 10 and the Brazilian/Argentine leagues, that's something & quite a bit more successful than being stuck in MLS. Marco Bueno is the one that finally managed to leave for Europe, but he's playing there in a league much weaker than the MX, the Finnish one, looking for a chance to climb I guess.
Because people like cheering for the USA kit regardless of who's wearing it. Is the role of the USSF just to represent the main national team or is it to grow the sport in the USA?
But see you're putting words in my mouth. I didn't say where they could instead use the money only that they should and likely do prioritize it and that tournament is likely not a high priority.
In other countries maybe. In the USA it's all about the money. Since taking part in the PanAm Games is going to cost the fed instead of producing any money, well, we're not going. And people are ok with it because it makes sense under the capitalist paradigm.
But it's not just FIFA events that we participate in I agree with you that cost probably played a role in The US not going, and I'm annoyed that they made that decision, but I imagine timing and player availability played a larger role. We send our youth teams to random international friendly tournaments all the time. To simply write this off as a money issue seems a bit unfair.
I imagine timing and player availability played THE role in why we're not attending this event. We can reshape that argument if it makes people feel better. The USSF chose not to invest the money required to send a "C" U23 team to the PanAm games. I think we should also wait to see what we do instead before we complain about not going to the PanAm games.............................
I think we'd all like to know what U.S. Soccer's plans for the U23 program between now and October are.
An explanation of why the male U23 isn't going would have been nice. I know in any other country in the region they give a reason when they qualify to some tournament but have to stay home at the last moment, which is the case with us here. But, then, in other countries in the region there are more people keeping an eye on their soccer NTs. Since we're just a little group of fans the fed doesn't even need to make money, they feel no need to explain anything.
While some European players might be available for U-23 Olympic qualifying, if Kreis had to assemble a purely domestic-based team, it would actually be pretty good. FAR FAR better than the two previous cycles. ----------Ferreira---Ebobisse--- ----------------Pomykal--------- -----------Yueil-------Mihailovic ------------------Durkin--------- ---Gutjahr--Trusty--Robinson--Cannon ------------Marcinkowski------- Bench (All those in the mix without cuts yet): Ferreira, Sands, Cerrillo, McKenzie, Glad, Aaronson, Araujo, Lindsey, Busio, Lewis, Saucedo, Lennon, Rennicks, Bello, Ochoa.
Let's not forget the team that lost to Honduras had CCV (now Swansea), Miazga (now Reading), Steffen (soon to be ManCity), Trapp (regular NT starter & captain), Morris (NT guy), Hyndman (somewhere in England), Polster (Rangers), Gil (not playing in MX), Horvath (current Brugge), Gboly (SPL), Kiesewetter (Stuttgart back then). Still, somehow, Herzog managed to lose to a Honduras whose only notable player was Choco Lozano.
Our player pool has much more pro experience now than that group did then. Starters against Honduras in 2015, with notes on their careers to that point: Horvath - had taken over as starter at Molde for the first time four months prior Okwuonu - played about a dozen USL games and ~100 MLS minutes Miazga - amid his breakout 2015 MLS season CCV - had never played a pro game Gil - most experienced player, was a rotational starter for RSL in 2015 Serna - in and out of Colorado's lineup, played less in 2015; he's still never played more minutes than he did in 2014 Kiesewetter - had made two Bundesliga appearances for Stuttgart, but was never very good Trapp - had become MLS regular in mid-2013. Had missed first half of 2015 with concussion issues Hyndman - 9 career games in the Championship, but hadn't played at all in 2015 for reasons I forget (injury/contract dispute) Polster - MLS rookie, starter Morris - college player
Snip: 23. Despite his tender age, Araujo is also a member of the U.S. U-23s. Word is that U-23 coach Jason Kreis, who later this year will attempt to qualify the Americans for their first Olympic football tournament since 2008, will pull heavily from these stacked U-20s. I’m told Kreis will be in Poland to personally scout Ramos’ team. https://sports.yahoo.com/24-thoughts-fc-dallas-jonathan-dos-santos-us-u-20-roster-001838042.html
Who knows...…………… BTW, that Honduras team did really well at the Olympics, and ended up playing in the Bronze medal match. So that team wasn't crap. They drew with Argentina. Beat South Korea and Algeria. Lost tight games to Portugal and Nigeria. And just so everybody is on the same page, after losing to Honduras we then played a loaded Colombia side in the playoff. We drew 1-1 and lost 2-1. Not the crime of the century. I remember the starting CB combination for Colombia in that series was Davinson Sanchez and Yerry Mina. Talent all over the field, and we stood toe-to-toe with them. [Of course, we didn't have our two best defenders. in qualifying: John Brooks and DeAndre Yedlin.]
Quick question, when does Olympic Qualifying start? And do we know the Central American/Caribbean teams yet? I can't find much on Wikipedia...
October, rumored to be in Costa Rica though they're making The Ticos qualify so they may be waiting for that before an official announcement. In The Caribbean there's 4 groups of 4 and the 4 group winners will advance to a playoff. The 2 winners of that will qualify for the final tournament. In Central America there's 6 teams vying for 3 spots (Belize isn't taking part). Costa Rica will play Guatemala, Honduras will play Nicaragua, and El Salvador will play Panama. Those are all 2 legged playoffs and the 3 winners will qualify for the final tournament. All that will happen in July
Makes sense because the cream is already skewing to the younger half of the cycle. Pulisic and McK are late 98s, Adams is a 99. Not one 97 has come close to matching them.
I am told by U.S. Soccer that this announcement, which came from the San Jose Earthquakes, jumped the gun. The roster isn’t actually set yet, and won’t be until Sunday. https://t.co/wKM1j7P8Zd— Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) June 7, 2019
What a surprise to see Akale and Koreniuk on the list. Although Koreniuk is having a great season with LA II along with Zubak. Another BIG surprise is to see Reyna. I think that the inclusion of Gio is excellent but also something strange. Something curious is that Benji Michel was in the preselection of Haiti for the Gold Cup and now he is with the U23 team.
Including Reyna would be excellent? Nah, too young and inexperienced for me. u23 is nearly a grown man's tournament. He isn't physically there yet. And no Miles Robinson? I guess he is getting major minutes at Atlanta and they would refuse to release him. But crazy that Sargent isn't going to this, if this turns out to be true. I am not understanding at all what is going on with him. Would Werder balk at him attending? Maybe so.
Interesting roster. - Is Lennon going to play right back? I don’t know who else will. - I thought Saucedo was a striker. Where does he fit in midfield? - There are definitely players from the last U23 camp that are being given a break. I think the ones that trained with the Senior team recently are a little ahead right now. The camp here will identify some backups. - It’s great to see Akale. I think he’s going to impress. - Yueill will miss his Open Cup game for this which is a little weird. - Good practice for Reyna I guess but there’s no way he makes this Olympic squad. I think this just keeps him practicing since he’s still “unattached”
