http://www.spox.com/at/sport/fussba...er-soll-nachfolger-von-marco-rose-werden.html Marco Rose to be assistant at RB Leizpig for Nagelsmann? or take over for Nagelsmann at Hoffenheim? Help with translation
why would Rose who's attracting interest among numerous clubs go to become an assistant? it's pretty much Nagelsmann to RB Leipzig with Salzburg current coach Rose being linked for a long time to succeed Nagelsmann at Hoff, which would leave the Salzburg position open and that's where Marsch is a in contention.
Officially taking over at RB Salzburg: OFFICIAL: Welcome to Salzburg, Jesse #Marsch! The 45-year-old American is to take charge of our club as head coach in summer 2019. https://t.co/KvbvRgjzPg #WelcomeJesse pic.twitter.com/NWTIYYzGkW— FC Red Bull Salzburg EN (@FCRBS_en) April 15, 2019
Can someone remind me what happened to Salzburg’s current coach? They had a pretty successful season, did they not?
This is at the worst the 3rd highest profile American head coaching job ever, right? I'd suppose the main competitors would be Bradley at Swansea and Wagner at Hudderfsfield, but with the noise that RB Salzburg has made in Europe the past couple years, you might make the case that that's a better gig than EPL relegation fodder.
I agree. But lets face facts. I will never question anyone's claim to be an American but Wagner WAS viewed as German throughout Europe and England. This eight appearances with the USMNT don't sway everyone's belief that he is an American coach like Bradley or Marsch. And Bradley took over a Swansea team that was poorly run and he only took over for a brief stint in the middle of a year after the first coach failed. Marsch is viewed as an American coach and is the hand-picked guy to lead a team that will be in the Champions League and is expected to win the Austrian Bundesliga. This is big
This is awesome! Will Marsch bring in any yanks to RBS?? I'm thinking there's gotta be at least 1 or 2.....
Interesting thought experiment. Salzburg almost exclusively signs young players. This season, they signed one guy over the age of 23 (Junuzovic), but he's Austrian and came on a free, so he's very much the exception. Over the past couple of seasons, it's about 50-50 as to whether a player was making a step up to Salzburg from a smaller club or making a step down from the fringes of a bigger club, so club of origin isn't exclusionary. They don't usually splash big money on signings. Over the past 5 seasons, they've paid transfer fees greater than $3 million four times, with the highest fee being $5.7 million for Erling Braut Haland. I have no idea what the foreign player rules are for the Austrian Bundesliga, but assume that it's easier for players with an EU passport, because it almost always is. And don't forget that Salzburg is good, so Marsch isn't going to sign an American just because. They'll need to actually be promising or an upgrade. So, with those parameters, the top-tier American prospects in Europe are out (at least for permanent transfers). That basically means Weah and Sargent for me; they're too expensive. So that leaves everyone else, let's go by general position. Salzburg already has a starting goalkeeper who's under contract until 2023, and they brought in a 21-year-old from Leipzig earlier this year, so sorry to Horvath and others, no dice. Their defense is good, but I can see some upheaval ahead. Stefan Lainer is probably too good for them at right back, so he could move soon. Their left back (Ulmer) is their captain, but is also 33 years old, so there's a space there soon. Centerback is pretty much set barring departures. Reggie Cannon could be an option here, maybe George Bello if he takes off a little bit (but emphatically not too much) this season. The midfield is stacked with young guns from top to bottom. Salzburg doesn't use wide midfielders/wingers, so they're all out. Here, then, you're looking more for promise than realized potential, so maybe someone like Chris Durkin or James Sands? Guys like Acosta, Parks, Roldan, Hyndman, etc. aren't good enough to play enough of a role to justify their cost, nor are their ceilings high enough for Salzburg to turn a significant profit. There's an opening at attacking midfield as Hannes Wolf leaves for Leipzig, but I don't think there's anyone good enough to be a potential replacement. Forwards! Again, lots of depth. They have 4 guys with 9+ goals, including Smail Prevljak who has 11 goals in 963 minutes. One of them, Munas Dabbur, is moving to Sevilla in the summer, with his 33 goals this season in tow. Our forward prospects beyond the top level aren't...awesome, but maybe they'd want to take a cheap flier on Novakovich. The tall and small pairing of Poulsen and Werner has worked really well for Leipzig of late, so you can imagine a scenario where Salzburg tries to replicate that. Those are my relatively quick thoughts: Cannon, Bello, Sands, Durkin, Novakovich, maybe some younger, less-heralded guys, particularly out of the New York academy.
wow...you know so much about Salzburg! I guess its kinda weird...the players who are good enough are probably too expensive/unavailable and the ones who are available are too inexperienced to be worth the trouble.... Would be cool if more yanks played in Austria....make it another league that yanks play in a la germany, denmark, etc... Also, I'm wondering how much Adams' success at RBL has helped Jesse secure this move?....I mean RBL are already looking at making a tidy profit on Tyler after only a few months....that success might be a catalyst for the Red Bull network to have Jesse spearhead a "poaching" of young US talent...would be amazing if it happened like that.....and they bring over a bunch of NYRB/US youth like Bayern is doing....
I pay casual attention to all of the Red Bull teams and try to watch them when I can. I think the global experiment is interesting, and their philosophy is basically mine from when I played Football Manager. Getting my Belgian feeder team into the Champions League was a big accomplishment; this all feels similar.
well having all of their clubs play the same system seems to fit to this model and has to be a big reason tyler adams could so seamlessly transition (almost unheard of in prior yanks abroad action)...might as well continue the experiment and see if it can be replicated with other NYRB players....gotta wonder if this is at all the thinking with Marsch to RBS....or if this is strictly about coaching only.
This was rumored to be the case for a long, long time. Long before Tyler Adams moved to Germany. This isn't really about some sort of American pipeline. This is about Jesse being the right guy for the job in Salzburg.
i thought the rumor was that marsch would be nagelsmanns assistant next year. i don't think this is necessarily about opening up an american pipeline but i just wonder if that could be something that happens in the future as result of the success of adams and hopefully marsch as well....I mean, if you are going to have your teams play the same system, might as well exchange players....i think up until recently there has been a doubt from germany/austria about bringing in RBNY players...but I think now we are primed for more of that to happen....of course, when it makes sense not forced. and selfishly, as a USMNT fan, i hope it happens a lot .....
Can Marsch speak German yet? I ask because, from what I understand, in the German Bundesliga a head coach must be able to speak the language. Just wondering if it's the same case in Austria.
Don’t know his level of fluency but yes, he spoke German in interviews when he first transferred to Leipzig
Nice breakdown. What about Pomykal for the attacking midfield spot? He is making waves. Does he have access to a Euro passport?
I wished he'd have gotten this opportunity straight away, but I guess the timing wasn't right with having to wait for the dominos to fall. Don't think he had anything to prove as an assistant w/ Leipzig to get a job of Salzburg's ilk w/in the RB system. He had RBNY punching above their weight, and this is the next step up. I think he'll do well given that fact, his intelligence, commitment, and charisma. Going to be interesting to see him manage in UCL, as long as it lasts at least. W/in the RB system, Aaron Long is a name that jumps out as a player they could seek to transfer in from the States. But I don't know if that's what he'd be looking for at his age. May want to move to a bigger league at this point. Maybe Sean Davis, who Red Bull would keep the entire transfer fee for, considering he's a HGP, and I don't know he'd have aspirations much above RB Salzburg. Maybe not a starter for a UCL club but rotational player. Kyle Duncan has the age and upside on his side. But MLS would take a portion of the transfer fee and he could still use some seasoning.
I suspect that part of the process was to familiarize himself with managing players in German. I doubt that he would have been able to confidently step into the Salzburg job before getting the experience interacting on a daily basis in a foreign language.
Marsch will be managing in Champions League in September. Tottenham secured a Champions League position with a top 4 spot in England instead of having to rely on a victory in the CL final, and that leaves 1 extra automatic qualification spot, which has trickled down to RB Salzburg. Salzburg have finally qualified for Champions League after 9 years of failed attempts to qualify. IT'S OFFICIAL!
