The "right back" that Adams played for the USMNT is not the "RB" of your prototypically-typical 4-4-2 formation discussion. Whether that's good or bad, whether it's best for him/us or not, it's not very instructive to think of how Adams played RB as analogous to how, say, DY or Frankie Heydude plays RB. Fabio's inverted RB runs under Klinsi are close, but still not the same as Fabio was still wing-back-ish in mentality. Adams was more a "false RB/Holding midfielder" - playing it similarly, ironically, to how JOB played LB for Ajax - a "QB" LB - although Adams got forward more. So it's not really helpful imho opinion to simply call it a USMNT-style RB.
I think it’s most helpful to call it what it is: A stupid ploy to provide cover so some SUM-cover boy can play the #6.
It also means Trapp is on the field instead of Yedlin. Yedlin has his defects but he brings much more to the team in a relative sense than Trapp.
Sure, if one wants to feel good about being pissed off, perhaps. But if one wants to actually analyze whether or not Adams contributed well, whether the line-up is effective, whether the tactics makes sense, whether the role is best for TA, it's probably more useful to accurately identify the role. In my humble opinion, anyway. I'm not a big fan of the machinations a team has to go through to morph from a 4-4-2 to a 3-2-3-2? 3-1-4-2? the way that system seem to want to do - I think it takes a lot more "groove" than a national team tends to get. But I do think that explains why Adams got so many touches and does explain why one could think that kind of set up would use him in an... "interesting" way. It's not like it's never been done before. The Lil' General used Reyna in a somewhat similar way a few times "back in the day." And it caused a great outcry of "Reyna plays RB!!" but, of course, he didn't, and rarely did for Gers. It was a specific line-up and strategy for a specific purpose. Doesn't mean it's good or smart or the best use of Adams, either.
This is the best game Leipzig has had without Adams, since Adams has arrived at the club. Up 2-0 on Wolfsburg coming out of halftime.
Werner scores right out of halftime and it is called back for offside ... not so sure it wasnt the ARM that was offside, meaning that the goal maybe should have stood. But still 2-0.
I am not a big fan of either bit I believe Yedlin limits the team more tactically and technically. Maybe US winds up with him at RB or WB, but that can be done anytime without much work to integrate.
With remaining games against Monchengladbach next, Bayern on the 2nd to last game, and finishing with pesky Bremen on the road, they will need a healthy Adams. They are also still in the DFB Pokal, so 6, possibly 7 games loom before season's end.
Moments after I write that last post, JAB turns the ball over, then gets beat by the first pass after his turnover in behind ... and goal. Of course, the goalscorer was offside, so he is spared his blushes. He is getting TORCHED. Moments after that, a player goes 1 v 1 with JAB, gets a great shot and hits the post. If this were a boxing match, JAB would have been stopped by TKO. Adams definitely in the CL next season. Great result for Leipzig.
Is there a thread on Yanks Abroad about Marsch? And even with him leaving there will still probably be an American on Leipzig's staff next season. https://www.transfermarkt.us/pellegrino-matarazzo/profil/trainer/10906
They played a 3-5-2 with Kampl as the deep playmaker and sabitzer, Forsburg in front of him. 15th clean sheet of the season. They have 22 goals against. Bayern the 2nd best defense has 29.
This is part of the master plan. Leave NY RB Join RB Leip as an assistant Lead RB Salz 2-3 years, prove his worth Lead RB Leip 2-3 years, win some games Lead an EPL mid table club for 2-3 years Return to the US to lead UMSNT to WC glory
