Why is Bethlehem Steel playing its home games at Chester this year?? I just finished watching the game on tv and it looked so sad. Last season I went to a game in Lehigh Valley and it looked like the perfect stadium for the team.
WOW that's crazy, I knew there were no lights at the stadium but all the games were played in the early afternoon, so it didn't really matter. Who's going to drive all the way to Chester to see BTS? Just a bunch of hardcore fans and that's basically it. Forget families and the occasional fans. WTF is Philly thinking? How to kill soccer in a community.
I think the USL said they had to play in a stadium with lights so they could play at night, which neither the Union nor Lehigh we're interested in paying for. All the day games probably weren't good for attendance anyway because of the conflicts with youth soccer. I also recall reading they couldn't sell beer because it was an on-campus stadium (not sure if that was an issue with Lehigh or the NCAA), which probably also hurt revenues and attendance.
Maybe so, but playing in Chester hurts attendance a lot more, if you have seen the match the other day, you probably have noticed it already. It was distressing.
I was wondering why their attendance was suddenly in the crapper this year. It didn't make sense for them to get attendance that low if they were still in Lehigh Valley. Why bother calling them Bethlehem Steel if they're playing in Philly?
I would imagine they intend to keep that brand consistent in hopes of moving back (potentially with a drop to USL League One, especially with Penn FC and Rochester returning.)
Maybe if they dropped to USL-1, they wouldn’t be obligated to get lights. They’d probably be one of the better-performing teams there.
The company line is they are still looking for a solution in the Lehigh Valley for 2020. If they are unable to find one (that the Union are willing to do) it's likely they will re-brand.
I thought Coca-Cola Park would be the most natural solution, but apparently the dimensions would be too narrow. (Not sure I buy that... rent and sod was probably too pricey for the Union's taste)
Actually I take that back (or maybe they took that back, could have sworn I read Tim McDermott say Coca Cola Park wasn't feasible)...but after a quick twitter search: In discussions w iron pigs for Coca Cola stadium and Lafayette. We are aggressively trying.— Tim McDermott (@TimMcDermott6) March 30, 2019 (although this is only in relation to 2 games for 2019, not a full season)
Does anyone know if tailgating with alcoholic beverages is allowed at McCarthy Field (La Salle University)?
This is an interesting article: USL fines Bethlehem Steel FC for facility conditions at La Salle https://www.prosoccerusa.com/usl/usl-fines-bethlehem-steel-facility-conditions-la-salle-union/ A league spokesperson told Pro Soccer USA that the USL issued an undisclosed fine to the Steel this week for the facility conditions at its current temporary home, McCarthy Stadium at La Salle University. The USL has demanded that the Steel improve those conditions.
Here's a picture of the visitor's "locker room" at half time. This is 2nd division professional soccer in the US? In all of Philadelphia, this is the best they could do?
BSFC is looking at an high school stadium with grass surface in Easton PA (which is 10 miles east of Bethlehem). The school district is considering $13 million in improvements that includes new bleachers, a press box, locker rooms, and more to be finished by Fall 2020. https://soccerstadiumdigest.com/201...c-could-move-to-renovated-cottingham-stadium/ architect's renderings: https://www.alloy5.com/portfolio/cottingham-stadium/
Renderings for the improved Easton PA stadium: with jumbotron on backside of the entry: Nice. But can they sell beer? Will there be foodtrucks?
