they can't all be against top 5 teams. right? we probably won't see a serious threat until the WC quarterfinals.

What a trip - Matches, Legends, So Cal crazies....all you could hope for.
Hurricane Carli warnings are still in affect. Makes you think that in late game set piece situations, you would like to have her, JJ and Lindsey all out there. If you know anyone at the Vatican, please get word to the Pope to throw some prayers and good thoughts for the continued recovery and health of Kelley's legs.

If you allow me to get all philosophical on your asses - - when you were around to witness the invention of fire like me, you start reflecting. And when you realize that you are much closer to the end than the beginning - - you may have an experience or moment of such overwhelming magnitude that you may be convinced that it can't get any better than this.
For me, such a moment occur at 4:37 p.m. (PT) on Saturday April 6, 2019 at Banc of California Stadium...

because even at the age of xx years young - give her 3 weeks to train....."The Great" Joy Fawcett would hold her own against anyone........

You have to consider, those are not mere mortal years rather, those are "The Great" Joy Fawcett years. Conventional rules and laws of evolution, physics and medical science do not apply.

I had never seen a pic of you before, @jackdoggy, but you somehow look exactly as I was imagining you, ever-present smile included! :p You'll say that the smile was much wider than ever in that picture, and I can hear you: I was feeling the same the day I had a photo with my favorite Japanese player at Algarve Cup a pair years ago (I am a Nadeshiko Japan supporter) and I well know that feeling of walking on air after that and saying to oneself: "Ok, now I basically fullfilled all I wanted to reach in my life". Always happy when anyone is experimenting that feeling, no matter if we're rivals and we're supporting different teams. :giggle:

Awesome. I was playing in a mellow coed league a few years ago. Joy and her husband were on the opposing team one evening. It was super cool to play against her.
I asked her for an autograph after the game. She said “no. Sorry”

    Nice pic JD.

Hey, what's that chain around your neck for? It looks like it's linked to Joy's hip.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned here-- they really found the rhythm of killing off the game. In fact the combination that was on at about 75.00 was really awfully in tune and effective, I thought...

I also thought Davidson played so well on the outside that it may be better to pull Ertz back and play Tierna there and move Dunn up. Make Dahlkamper, Brunn and Ertz the cb rotation. I mean we should sorta know what we're doing by this stage, but you can't be unwilling to accept late breaking good ideas.

I thought Ali played very well, especially at the things Ellis wants that she was too tentative to get done in her previous incarnation.

It worked well in this game. Would it work well against a very strong opponent? It's too bad we don't have one more game against a top team.

    maybe.

but i’m not sure she’s going.

i’m not sure she can still handle the top teams. her value against thailand and chile can easily be duplicated by sonnett, dunn, or even that red stars defender who never plays - short.

Krieger was always known for her defensive prowess, however, she lacked the offense to stay on Jills new revamped roster of 18 forwards, 3 MFs and 3 DBs.

I think with the lapses in defense we've seen this past year, her presence in camps and friendlies is sorely needed to help the younger players, even if she doesn't make the final roster.

Well, unfortunately, if she doesn't make it, this may have been her last chance. The WWC roster will be announced before the next May 12 friendly although I guess she could also really shine in the camp leading up to that friendly if Ellis chooses to call all the bubble players into that camp.

Aren't there a few NWSL games before that last camp call up though? I think that's those are the last moments before she secures the World Cup roster for good. You never know either, even if she gets the roster finalized, there are two games left before the official WWC and unfortunately if injuries occur during the send offs, bubble players can still find themselves on the roster in June. All hope is not lost in other words if we want Krieger. Honestly, I think we really need her, I saw a slightly better operating US team with her playing.

And, sometimes, that accidentally added player can work to be one of the most important players in the tournament. If my memory serves in 2002 on the men's side, arguably the best the US men have ever done in a WC, Pablo Mastroeni was added due to an injury to Chris Armas in the final weeks leading up to the tournament. He proved to one of the most important players in that WC.

I "Think" that the roster can be altered right up to when it is officially submitted right before the start of the WWC.

But, because of the nature of this team and for other reasons including the coach, I doubt that any real impact player gets added late. In fact I doubt that any late additions will see the field much, if at all, at the WWC except to warm up.

Yeah I know that notably, during the last WWC the one player that was never ever used on the USWNT was Whitney Engen if my memory serves correctly. I guess there will be that one player that doesn't see time during the 2019 WWC but I always find that strange since I figure you'd want to utilize all of your players at some point. I'm not a coach though and maybe we were just real lucky that no major injuries occurred so that we were always able to play our starters and maybe Whitney Engen was just considered like a reserve player in an otherwise solid defensive lineup much like the 3rd goalkeeper. Plus now that I think about it, our defense wasn't the question mark last tournament.

I notice we never really use Casey Short that much so I'm wondering if she's acting as the reserve outside back this go around. I'm not liking the fact that O'Hara is injured but I guess it could be worse, we could have a player that ends up with a serious injury that takes them out of the tournament completely, we have been fortunate that hasn't really happened yet. O'hara is probably the only one so far and she might still be able to make the WWC.

When I first read this I felt that something seemed just wrong. Now, after rereading this thread, I know what it is:
I cannot, under any circumstances, picture Joy playing any soccer match "mellow." It just seems so out of character. She and the rest of the '99ers are just so competitive that "mellow" playing really appears to be the very antithesis of their on field personas.

My feeling is that she is a one position player (OK two if you count the two outside back spots as different) for the US and that we have been experimenting with players dynamically changing position and style. The staff already knows what to expect from Short so her game time spot has always been going to players that there are questions about what they can do when asked.

I fully expect her to be on the roster going forward and we will see her play in matches going forward as we gravitate toward the exact system and sub patterns we will see at the WWC. It "could" be as a starter but I expect it will be as a 60 min + sub at one of the outside back spots. We will be playing matches with pretty short breaks at the WWC and the outside backs will need rest and not just shifted to other spots on the field.

I may be misreading what has happened in the buildup so far but I do not think I have misread things that badly.

Did anyone else notice the faux pas committed by Glenn Davis? The camera showed some of the players in the stands who were not on the bench. Davis points out Rapinoe, but totally neglects to mention the other two members of the USWNT sitting with her. White bias? Or, does he not know the team well enough to recognize anyone other than the stars?
    Julie didn't correct him.

I try quite hard to ignore anything said or done by the commentators of any US match because they just go off on meaningless tangents, like this one, and often ignore the match that is actually being played.

To paraphrase the immortal Sgt. Schultz: "I hear nothing!"

Rapinoe was the big name sitting there. Had nothing to do with race.

I had no issue with it. Here she was out knocking a ball around with her husband and a bunch of other couples. She didn’t want to be a famous soccer player. She just wanted to be a “normal” person out there having fun. It’s actuslly a cooler story that she said “no. Sorry”, than it was for her to sign my jersey.

Once the final roster is submitted to FIFA (and I'm not sure if USSF will do that by the game on May 12 or whether they'll wait to submit to FIFA at the deadline; the final roster deadline is not in the regulations doc), only a "serious injury" can cause a rostered player to be bumped for one from the provisional list. "Serious injury" means it has to be sufficiently serious for the FIFA Medical Committee to say this player is not able to participate in the WWC.
