No one is arguing he hasn't played. Of course he's played. He just hasn't played much at all. He has gotten two (2) starts since his arrival and played about 400 minutes. In contrast, Oliver Burke, another loanee striker who came in at the same time has gotten twelve (12) starts and played almost 1,000 minutes in that same time. That's a successful loan, loads of playing time. Weah getting a piddling 12 minutes here and 9 minutes there for 3 months isn't a "success." Yea, he was getting 0 PT at PSG.. but he could have gone on loan somewhere that needed him or that would have utilized him... Celtic wasn't the only option and it ended up being the wrong choice. I really hope he doesn't go back to Celtic. The level is relatively poor and the squad is too large for him to get a run.
Well entitled to your opinion. I respect it. I don't agree with it but hey that's how those things roll. At the end of the day, it's not what we, as fans, deem a success. It's what Weah, Celtic, and PSG think. They are the ones with the vested interest. Considering there haven't been rumblings publicly or any leaked displeasure, I'd venture to say all three parties are satisfied.
So to be clear, your basis of comparison is the guy who turns 22 on Sunday, a full Scottish international on loan from West Brom, who had 15 EPL appearances last year and 25 BL appearances the year before. The guy who pretty clearly is getting a look over for a potential transfer as opposed to being brought in to fill out the numbers? That's your direct comparison?
I miss the days when a YA started and scored and we talked about how fun that was and what a good day the kid had.
I mean, I think that's a pretty flawed basis, dunno what you expect to hear. These things aren't, as a rule, talked about publicly.
Yes, to be clear, I'm comparing Weah's loan stint with the other striker Celtic brought in in January. I appreciate the highlighted conjecture and spin though. Good argument that.
When you are at a club like Celtic......EVERYTHING is public. EVERYTHING gets leaked. Trust me. If there were rumblings it would be out there for some sort of public consumption.
I'm going to suggest that some folks might have an unrealistic expectation of what most professional soccer loans of unproven Youngers look like. Which doesn't mean that they never end up in a full slate of exceptional 90's, but most fall in the soft, boring, middle.
I don't think it's necessarily accurate though to assume that just because someone hasn't publicly complained about their situation they are happy with it.
don't forget in the unlikely instance where a loanee gets a lot of time, it because the club they're at stinks and therefore the player sucks too (see: Miazga)
I doubt he'd have scored as much, even as a regular starter, with Hibernian. Celtic is a respected club. Doing well there still may carry some weight, but with the overall quality of the other clubs lagging, scoring a lot doesn't seem to have the cachet of the old days. It's important how the players do against Rangers. Although they're still recovering from their time in Purgatory.
Kinda why I didn't see the point of joining Celtic. Now if he were to join them during the Fall when they had the CL group stage; that's one thing. He'd have fared better remaining in France or heading to Portugal. Unless he just absolutely wanted to spend some months in Scotland.
I'm not assuming Weah has publicly said that. Agents speak to clubs, clubs talk to each other, and players talk to all parties involved and the circus media that surrounds Celtic by and large always finds out. They make it public. That's all I'm saying. A player doesn't have to speak publicly for his displeasure (or happiness) to be known.
In soccer-mad countries, there are entire newspapers dedicated to locker room rumors. One could say about 30% of the entire culture revolves around soccer. In the USA, if football (gridiron) reaches the 10% mark, it's high.
Just to point out explicitly what I think you’re hinting at, Burke is getting the minutes less on merit and more on his fit as a potential full acquisition. Burke is an athletic player with clear technical limitations. Weah is about 2 -3 levels above him, at least.
What did you guys expect. Weah was always going to be a second choice player at Celtic. I hate Celtic with a passion but even I would admit that some promising 19 year old is not going to just strut in their and be a regular feature. I think this experience will put some hair on his chest.
he scored a couple times for frickin PSG this season before banishment by tuchel for some no-name scrub......... the point of the loan was to go to a team a level or 2 below psg and play. A LOT. celtic is a level or 2 below PSg............I think ESPECIALLY after Weah has shown that he can produce at celtic for him to get more time than he has.... brendan rogers leaving was the problem with this loan....bad luck. if he had stayed it woulda worked out better.....
Rodgers was in charge of Celtic for 11 games after Weah's arrival. In those 11 games, Weah appeared 9 times, totalling 224 minutes. That's 22.6% of the available minutes under Rodgers. Lennon has managed 6 games, of which Weah has appeared in 4, totalling 111 minutes. That's 20.6% of the available minutes under Lennon. 2% isn't a big enough difference for me to blame the managerial change.
