started in a friendly for 1st team, only to injure himself at the 37th minute from a dual and was subbed out.
looks like there is no space for him as there are too many cbs at Union. Although some reports say that since he's a cb for the future, he has a good chance for a contract extension. His contract ends in 2019. there are 7 cbs at Union and including Maloney 5 have expired 2019 contracts. have to say he needs a loan in Winter.
I know it's pretty much why he hasn't played anything besides friendlies all season long. Majority of 2BL teams don't have a II, which is a negative. one CB left Union today so now there 5 cb competition for Maloney. The issue with him is that he's neither XI cb nor bench and if he stays at Union for the rest of the season he risks playing no competitive games all season.

kid should have went on loan to 3rd Liga in Winter, now expiring 2019 contract, he's like 6th or 7th choice cb in a team fighting for promotion. Unless you get mass injuries or Union miss out on promotion early enough to have 1-2 games left that are irrelevant, he's unlikely to play all season. can't imagine being a pro player playing 0 competitive games in a my post U19 era.
Played the 2nd half in a 4-1 win: Rot-Weiß Erfurt: Knoll; Adomah (Roschlaub 45), Becken (Lela 45), Lorenzoni (Zingu 45); Kelbel (Geurts 45), Gladrow (Moritz 64), Hasse (Wegmann 45), Rüdiger (Voigt 45), Pino Tellez (Spahija 73); Shala (Göllnitz 64), Rechberger (Meier 73) 1. FC Union Berlin: Busk; Ryerson, Parensen, Torrejon (Rankic 74), Lenz; Rapp; Mane (Maloney 45), Taz, Mees (Sander 74), Hartel (Dehl 45); Abdullahi (Eidtner 74)
He extends his contract: 👉 Good news in Köpenick! @maloneyL33 has signed a new two-year-deal with 1. FC Union Berlin. #fcunionhttps://t.co/hGwuVevooM— 1. FC Union Berlin (English) (@fcunion_en) April 4, 2019
2 years, enough to get a season loan next season if that's their route for him. "For me, as a young player, it is now important to get more experience and constantly improve,” said Maloney.
FCUB must have some hope of being in the Bundesliga next year. They are in the playoff spot now. Pretty good vote of confidence to extend the kid with that possibility. Wonder why Ramos hates him...
word was that he didn't impress for the USA U20. this renewal is not about being in 1BL in fact other reports not from official Union Berlin say that if they go to 1BL it's even more likely he goes on loan. He has no experience and spent most of this season studying and only played friendlies. And besides that Union have plenty of cbs and another on loan.
Of course, I wasn't implying that he would be playing for them in the Bund. Just that they want him on the books with aspirations of being in the Bund. I get it that he didn't impress in U20 camp. But it was one camp and the team is short at the position. Just seems strange, but Ramos has these head scratchers often, that UB like him at all and he can't be the 3rd or 4th CB on a U20 team with 2 CBs...
sure they like him but it's not a long term contract only extended for 2 years, seems more like a wait and see approach. he was the U19 captain last season as well but besides that Union Berlin has no reserve team which makes it harder for Academy players to get chances. Also think this is also about not wanting more failures in terms of 1st team promotions. So far they've failed to promote for real for years and in terms of Academy players in 1st team it's currently poor when looking at pre 98....there is no one. 98 1 guy (expiring Summer 2019 contract, no real chances), 99 3rd GK and Maloney. Clubs like these that don't promote much and lack of 1st team chances, should consider loaning players. Some Union executives in youth were not happy about the struggles for real promotions over the years and wanting better. They have some interesting U17-U19 players. Doesn't help when competing with Hertha Berlin for talents either.....
When I wrote that about Ramos I literally thought, Bshredder can't possibly be reading the Maloney Yanks Abroad thread... Maybe you have a bot that reports all Tab references? In all seriousness, thanks for the info that it was 2 camps. That is different than what I had thought was just one short camp. One camp and a kid can be sick, having problems with his girlfriend, jet lagged, not used to the Florida climate. But two is different. Either UB is crazy or maybe Maloney makes up for a lack of quickness by having a good rapport with his team mates at the club level. Time will tell. Never trying to knock Tab. He is one of the view genuine people at USSF and predicting the future with 18-19 year old athletes is not easy nor important for him with most of his roster.
