just got my tix for the home leg. Just hoping to stay within range during leg 1. I don’t know much about Monterrey except for the fact many say they are the best team left in the field right now. Their home stadium looks spectacular.

If we aren't ready right at this moment, we will never be. We are looking absolutely fantastic. Given their defense, and especially their defense at home, I think hoping for a goal is the edge of reasonable expectation. but given their attack of late, I think we can leave with a good close result, maybe a tie and could just steal a win.
Also, while everyone is quick to dismiss our series with Toluca as having bested a very bad team, in Liga MX since we destroyed them in the series, they have two wins, a tie and one loss (and their next game will be the in-between for Monterrey).
With our injuries and age, I don't think we can expect 180 minutes between Thursday and Sunday. My vote (okay, I don't have one) is to sacrifice Cinci and go all out in CCL.

if we're within two goals after thursday and vermes doesn't play an entirely different lineup on sunday, there needs to be a revolt. and then if i hear one person from the organization say that "they were serious about this competition" and were "going for it," then that person should be fired on the spot. there could not be a better "skippable" game in between. away game against an eastern conference opponent who also happens to be an expansion team. just throw out the second team and say to hell with that game.

Other than it’s on national tv, not that PV will care, but I’m sure the league would ‘love’ us throwing out a second team on national tv...

Here is the analysis on who hosts the second leg of the Final, if SKC should advance past Monterrey.

I want to see SKC host the Final as a fan, regardless of whether one thinks hosting the 2nd leg is an advantage or not.

Today at least I can still dream (however remote) of seeing SKC raise CCL Cup at CMP after the Final, and please, no more PK's, I can't take another heart stopper....

CCL Tie breaker ranking to determine who hosts second leg of Final:
    (1) Most points awarded to date (3 pts Win, 1 pt Tie)
    (2) Goal Differential (GD)
    (3) Most Goals Scored (GS)
    (4) Most Away Goals Scored (GA)
    (5) Most Wins
    (6) Most Away Wins
    (7) Yellow/Red card point accumulation

Entering into the Semifinals, SKC are currently ranked Second.

    *Santos: 12 pts, +13 GD, 17 GS, 8 GA
*Sporting KC: 9 pts, +7 GD, 9 GS, 3 GA, 3 Wins, 1 Away Win
    *Tigres: 9 pts, +6 GD, 8 GS, 2 GA, 3 Wins, 1 Away Win

Obviously SKC must get past Monterrey to even think about hosting the Finals. Santos plays Tigres, and the most plausible scenarios require Tigres to advance from the other semifinal.

Tigres hosts 1st leg of semi final, root for a 2-0 Tigres win, then a 0-1 Tigres loss in the return leg.

Both SKC games are after the Tigres games, so the necessary results needed will be more clear by kickoff of both SKC semifinal games.

Here are the scenarios where SKC hosts 2nd leg of Finals:

    (A) SKC advances with W-W. 15 pts, will add at least +2 GD. Hosts if:
(A1) Tigres advances with W-W. 15 pts. and needs same or less GD than SKC won their games
    (A2) Tigres advances without winning both games (W-T, W-L, T-T), < 15 pts.
(A3) Santos advances with two ties. 14 pts
(A4) Santos advances with a W-L, 15 pts, and SKC makes up +7 GD (this is not going to happen against Monterrey)

    (B) SKC advances with W-T. 13 pts, will add at least +1 GD.
(B1) Tigres advances with a W-T. 13 pts and does not make up GD with SKC, or they match GD but still score less overall goals
    (B2) Tigres advances with a W-L. 12 pts
    (B3) Tigres advances with a T-T. 11 pts

    (C) SKC advances with W-L. 12 pts. Might not add any GD
(C1) Tigres advances with a W-L, 12 pts and does not make up GD with SKC, or they match GD but still score less overall goals
    (C2) Tigres advances with a T-T. 11 pts

    (D) SKC advances with T-T. 11 pts. no GD change
(D1) Tigres advances with a T-T. 11 pts, no GD change (SKC wins GD tiebreaker)

I think scenario C1 is our most plausible chance.

If SKC can somehow pull out a tie at Monterrey, and if Tigres wins at home on Wed, then Scenario B1, and B2 look plausible, especially B2 if Tigres destroys Santos in the first leg.

Go Sporting! As a fan I'm hoping somehow we get a tie at Monterrey and a win at CMP.

Our team is playing as well as I've ever seen them in 24 seasons, and Monterrey will be the toughest competitive match we have ever played (Vermes quote). I am eager to see how we stack up.

So we are rooting for a tigres W-L advance with a 2-1 total goals scored, or something close to this.

Do i remember it incorrectly, that the league re-arranged games to help TFC?
Also, what percentage of the national audience will have any idea who is usually in SKC's starting 11? Frankly, Busio grabbing a start would be a nice storyline. But Vermes could throw 11 of us BS posters on the field and most US viewers would think, yeah, that's about right.

Yes, that gives SKC some of the more plausible options to advance. A Tigres advancement by W-L with minimal GD.

A zero GD (two ties - doesn't matter the score as SKC owns GD over Tigres right now, or a W-L) Tigres advancement decided by PKs would be the absolute best.

But more plausibly, root for Tigres to win 2-0 tomorrow at home, and then camp out on defense and lose 0-1 at Santos.

The team has to request the games be moved, but with this game on national team, and the more condensed schedule, it’s hard to do

This ^. If I had more than one rep to give this I would.

Additionally, our second team could use some quality minutes in a meaningful match and would be going in looking to win - on a quality pitch, unlike that CAI stinker of a game. This is a "no-lose" scenario for SKC to use 100% second team (keep Melia out too - 0% chance of freak injury), even if they lose the game at Cinci.

Yes, lost points from this Cinci game might be the difference at season end between 1st place West/Supporters Shield and a 4th place road playoff spot. But that makes the game all the more meaningful for the second team playing it, and makes them feel truly like a contributing part. All the more reason to do it.

And if the second team actually wins in Cinci? Woah. Nothing but upside and lots of confidence up and down the roster - which will come in handy later in the season when we will need that bench strength.

Back to my rule: never exchange something rare for something common. CCL Semi-finals are super rare - this of course being our first ever in the 11 years of this competition (of which we only qualified 3 other times). We might not see this again for another 11 years, or ever. We get 34 MLS regular season games every year just for existing.

    Go all in for CCL.

Weather at kickoff in mid-low 70s Thursday. Thank goodness it’s a 9pm kick. High of 90 degrees in Monterrey Thursday. (Leg 2 could be much much cooler especially in second half. Hmmm......).

FMP: Monterrey is 3rd place team in Liga MX. Not playing their greatest as of late. D L L D in their last four, including a loss at that miserable Atlanta Utd.

I heard PV on mls podcast today. He said Monterrey can basically throw the mls equivalent of 10 DPs at you with a bunch of Garber bucks on their bench.

A great post but wanted to highlight this bit, as it is something I think it's easy to overlook. Having a talented bench is worthless if they aren't fully invested in the project, and if they don't feel trusted to perform they won't when their time comes. One of my favorite (and certainly most profitable) seasons ever was with the club of childhood team, Reading FC back in 2005-2006. the bench was deep, and the manager made a point of putting out a second 11 on a regular basis (not when it was Sat to Sat for games, but when it was sat to tuesday to sat to wed, the second 11 started the midweek matches). It ended up being the best single season in the history of English football, in large part because they never slowed down when the injuries arrived. It was a lockerroom in which everyone was pulling in the same direction (which is less common than we like to think).
Playing our second 11 may be a risk by one definition, but it's more of an investment.
I could not agree more, it's nothing but upsides.

Very true ... although it would be a great time to have the league pump some excitement into the CCL run for SKC if they are coming off a good result.

We really don't have much of a selection on here. I guess I could describe a doener to you, if you're into that sort of thing... Though, really, in KC, you want the BLT from the Peanut.

that was an abject first half. zusi, russell, gerso, and fontas were abysmal. absolutely abysmal. looks like we used up all of our quality last weekend.

that was fun for about six minutes.

I wish the audio from the stadium wasn't so muted... can't even hear the whistles on the broadcast.

Lots of bad passing in to lanes that didn't exist or closed quickly.

No added time and ending the half *while* the game was stopped for injury was a head scratcher.
