I saw her at UNC id camp two and three years ago.She ain't that good. My kid crushed her and brought that whole camp down into the ice (sorry, I love "The Thing"). Anson saw and Anson liked. If you asked Anson today, he'd remember her name. But there was much ballyhood surrounding the then 10 and 11 year old. To my chagrin, my kid chose a life of sorority and party. To my delight, I wasn't receiving any "I hate you" texts during the summer. To Anson's credit, they wanted her but figured she was a flight risque. Despite natural talent, you gotta go to the lengths of this 13 year old or ECNL stuff to show them the willingness to forego your college years. That actually is just as significant a recruiting factor as talent.

There’s a twitter vid floating around of her working out with the Thorns. Hard to see if she was keeping up but in the brief clip she got off a decent shot on Franch in a short sided game

here's more highlights from Olivia Moultrie, though this was when she was just 11 years old, but playing up since all 11v11/full fields

Capriati is an example of how great the pressure of success is on a prodigy leading to emotional struggles. Olivia's family has been jumping through hoops and spending serious money to promote her ascension. I worry with her home schooling, playing up so much, travel, and now moving to Portland that she has been isolated from bonding with a peer group in pre-adolescence. I hope that it's not too late for her family to spend similar time and energy in taking care of her developmental, social, and emotional needs as she passes through her early adolescence and later teen years. For me as a distant well wisher, this is far more important than soccer, even though in most cases team sports like soccer can be a vehicle for the necessary social and emotional work with peers. That she is working out with the senior Thorns team already may actually be a mixed bag focused again on her soccer training.

Here's a link to an article about the young lady and her relationship to the Thorns in The Oregonian, yesterday. I hope the link works.

soccer camps is one of the huge hidden costs of youth soccer that nobody wants to talk about. the state of North Carolina college system alone has a ton of them
North Carolina women's soccer ID camps - COLLEGE ID CAMPS
but just going with the most famous(UNC at Chapel Hill)
UNC Girls Soccer College Bound - Chapel Hill UNC Girls Soccer Camp
it's got 2 camps an year/both the same with a 4 day/3 nights for $650. That's probably average. But obvious extra $$$ if like Moultrie's parents fly with her all the way from CAL(where they live)

along with college camps, you got a lot drive by night camps that saturate my hometown in the sunner with names like Samba school of soccer, Stokes City Travelin Camp & even Yael Averbuch got her own that hits out town about one's an year Wish there was some info on how much the average parent pays an year for these camps?

yeah, it's the field of dreams and that goofy Terrance Mann speech. It's exciting to get those invites, booeeey! The economy of State College, Pa would collapse with the absence of Dambach's camps. They are so perfectly situated in snagging all that concentrated I-95 corridor cash. Every attorney, doctor, broker's kid from DC through Boston attend.

Then the corporate camps, like adidas, paying the D1 coaches to attend and snore under the canopy, just to get their logo on the website. The D3 coaches don't get paid, they are actually there hustling to find players, with the D1 bait.

There was some usefulness. Two guys whom I admired from the process were, first, the NC State guy, Satriano or something? At that time, he didn't do residential blowouts (unlike his North Carolina peer schools, as you point out). He just did these three hour pop in-pop out deals, maybe twice per year, 100 bucks. No cottage industry built on false dreams. The second was Todd Bramble. i forget what camp, it was an ensemble camp. This is through a couple of participants so it's grain of nacl, but he met with all the girls at the end and apparently laid it all out for them, college soccer sucks. they'll be wondering what they got themselves into...unless they were 100% committed to what it takes, the sacrifices, etc. He said 99.9% won't cut it, it has to be all in or don't try. He did a great service by that. I saw the attendees coming out kind of somber, crestfallen and I asked what happened and she told me what he had said.

Strike two was the observation that of all the current rostered players assisting at these camps, not one seemed....genuinely happy.

Bramble and the "counselors" cast the light on the doubt, then the lights went out completely when I took her to a UMCP id camp. We arrived early so, to my hesitation as I knew, I took her over to greek row. it was late afternoon. All the sorority girls were out on the porticos of their houses, packs of coeds heading down the street all dressed up heading for some social affair, etc. She asked me what the hell is this? I, in composite manner, explained greek life, what the greek letters stand for on the houses, etc. As we entered fraternity circle, she said, sans prompt, "I want this". game over. Ray, could I get a refund??

Your'e so right, nobody talks about that, if I could get that cash back... I'm estimating I spent 4k. I'm not making that mistake again but my other daughter stinks so I don't have to worry. The soccer world is good.

The camps were exciting at the time, though, even adidas, and I had a good time traveling with her. But the complaints grew louder and louder (you goof off while I have to do the camps!) then flat out boycotts and refusals. I also, naively, thought they'd balance a college social life. Hindsight, i want my money back.

This explains a lot of your posts. Sorry it wasn’t a great experience for you and your kid. Don’t take that as a slam. Truly sucks and happens to more than those that get through

taking it that your kid didn't play soccer in college? don't feel bad, though my kid only plays for a D2 team, it's feels like college soccer isn't all that it's cracked up to be/or at least for the parent.
They play most their games on Fridays, so I got to take off from work to make the 5 & half hours drive to the game. The crowd's usual smallish, with a mix of player's families & students(but this about the same from watching NCAA champs, Fla St. streamed games) Usually the hotter co-eds come for the men's game that follows. So after watching two games in a row,(as my kid's team got to watch the boys play as well) Hoping she'll want to spend some free time with me, but it's been, "dad, can I borrow some money to go eat?")as usually the girls now want to go out with the boys team). She says I', invited to come with, but I do get the picture that I;m really NOT, since I can also over hear from her friends that there's this or that party to attend after super. Next day, it's all ready check out time at the local motel, but my kid's just getting up from last night's adventures so can spent a few hours with her till it's time to make the long drive back home.
I can see the attraction of being on an college team, as they pretty much are a fraternity themselves(their spring breaking right now in Tampa). And even talking to an English girl on the team; she paid $1.700 for some pro firm to film highlights & recruit her to colleges over her. As well, I heard a lot of stories of foreigners from non English speaking countries getting scholarships, only to fail the elementary tests at the local US consulate. So US college ball seems to be quite popular around the world.

The one big con for me,; my girl at first really wanted to be RN. But quite a few(even a D1 coach) told her it be impossible to become a nurse while playing soccer. Finally the place she's going to now, said no problem. But after a few years when RN classes become more serious, she switched majors, as I do think she was pressured by the coaching. So giving up your preference, is a big problem

Congrats to your daughter and I completely understand the whole “other things to do” however I don’t necessarily agree with your generalization of it just being a sorority. Most of these kids are up at 5 am busting their ass in the gym followed by field training then a full course load. Average attendance at my kids school is 750-1000 but once a year they play in front of 10k plus. Definitely not easily doable for a nursing degree because of the time commitment

Regarding 5 am, I remember a couple of counselors telling 'rents that the new players have adjust to waking up when students are still up. i personally saw that as a positive, as most parents would want the structure to ensure academic success. But my kid said 18-22 happens only once and I couldn't argue. My gripe with all this is why? non-revs (particularly women's) don't have to be like this, why is all the coaches/player feedback at camps foreboding, warnings and (rightfully) scaring off good players? I remarked the rostered players seemed unhappy and stoic (I chalked that up to being forced to help out at camps, but the unanimity points to systemic woe) and nobody ever said anything of positive reinforcement for pursuing it. Why can't the NCAA regulate and allow a co-ed life. Let them take majors of their choice. They're not going to develop like male physiques because they don't have that genetic purpose. Otherwise, the coaches have to justify their existence so will treat it like a rev. Most of the rosters outside the what, top P5 elites, atrition, few seniors. They bag it. Self defeating cycle....coaches are compelled to treat the sports like the NFL...thus scaring talent out of the pool...not enough to go around....coaches are canned. Repeat. Women athletes are divided into haves and have nots based on DNA, No training changes that. That's why little parity in their sports. Not enough haves...not a sellers market.

It's starting to look to me as though Anson and the boys started hemming and hawing on that commitment. My goofball had her way with her, leaving her saying "aaah" and "uuuh" and "sh!t". No kid can beat the Grinch!..Jim Carrey, remember that? These Portland yucks are on the gravy train.

It reminds me of my rich brother. He tried forcing a music career for one of his. She stinks, I'm talking earplugs. He moved her to LA where the second-tier producer types, the studio guys, all say the right things, talking about maybe a "funky-blues mix" for this number, etc. Palms out, of course. In effect, Megan Trainor's dad beat my brother to the all about the bass, anti-bullying for profit angle. I'm not sure what happened but I'm guessing a Simon Cowell finally came along and in about 3 seconds, she was back to college.

don't think there's nothing wrong with uprooting & moving your family,as you see that in individual sports like ice skating & gymnastic(as the teacher/mentor doesn't move to you/you got to move to them) & co-incidentally, Portland is Nike's HQ(she's all ready appeared for a split second on their commercial featuring all female athletes),

Not sure how the $300K from Nike is going to last, but lets hope the Thorns don't take advantage of her current 15 min. of fame & don't play her until she's ready

They never said it was $300K that she was getting. The article mentions that a 4 year scholarship is on average worth $300.000 at a top D1 school. She is getting more than that from Nike, possibly a lot more.

Or a lot less. We don’t know. Whatever she is getting, I hope she will get that money when she turns 18

    Did you read the article?

The multiyear endorsement deal effectively launches Moultrie’s already flourishing young career in the sport. Although no details on the terms of her contract with Nike have been disclosed, a New York Times story revealed that her agent said it was worth more than a four-year scholarship at a top university, which is valued at an estimated $300,000.

You do realize these agents overvalue their clients correct?
I hope I don’t have to explain why.

You do realize that anyone with common sense can see she got more than her UNC scholarship, right? Some people also tell the truth, believe it or not.

For her sake, I sure hope so. Her dad is far from a person with common sense though.
