Something that's been bothering me about this shooting is that this doesn't feel like your typical mass shooting. (God that feels disgusting to type that.) Everything about it feels like it wasn't done to further some agenda, but feels like an exercise in trolling. The manifesto, the writing of names on the weapons, the suggestion to people watching "remember, subscribe to PewDiePie" before exiting the vehicle to enter the mosque. All of this feels like it was some kind of exercise in trolling on a grand scale. "Mass murder to own the libs" kind of thing. He didn't just shoot up the mosque. After he left the mosque, he started randomly firing at people walking down the street, including small children. Then he went to the second mosque. While he will be portrayed as a crazed white supremacist (and this was definitely about white supremacy), I don't think he was crazy. Perhaps I'm not explaining it right, but I don't think he was killing these people just for white supremacy, but to troll.
I've had an inkling that his motive might have been to "win the thread" in some shithole corner of the internet. Is that what you mean?
That was well said.....Worth watching and listening to. “You’ll have to forgive me, these won’t be my best words...”On this heartbreaking day, Waleed reflects and calls for unity. #TheProjectTV pic.twitter.com/mIOI0eGamb— The Project (@theprojecttv) March 15, 2019
That's kinda how it feels. Like taking trolling it to its most extreme end. I can imagine a bunch of 19-year-old freaks on the internet going "Now that's how you troll."
I’m trying to remember the last mass shooting in a Western country done by a Muslim - was it Orlando? In terms of mass shootings, that seems many ago.
I don't disagree, but in some darker internet circles and white supremacist circles, he may treated as some kind of martyr. I remember reading a Twitter thread this morning where the comparisons were made between ISIS and white supremacy, and they line up almost exactly. I don't think we're going to see a trend, but if this guy starts being hailed a martyr to the white race, don't be surprised to see copycats looking for the same amount of attention.
I think it was Orlando, but San Bernadino was also done by a Muslim, I believe. In terms of mass shootings in the Western world, I think white people are winning something like 70-3 over Muslim mass shooters.
A little nugget from 2016 when Trump was on the campaign trail. During the South Carolina primary in 2016, Trump enthusiastically told a (fictional) story about the mass murder of 49 Muslims. pic.twitter.com/9xssH0MZVI— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) March 15, 2019 Later in the 2016 campaign, Trump repeated his praise of the imaginary bigoted massacre of Muslim "terrorists." He did it again in a slightly more veiled manner as president in 2017. pic.twitter.com/kLuShkGW4d— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) March 15, 2019 But he has no influence over what white supremacists do...
Lots of white folk in the "western" world, so statistically speaking you would expect 80-90% of all mass shooting to be done by white people or so. Not western world, but some USA stats. https://www.statista.com/statistics/476456/mass-shootings-in-the-us-by-shooter-s-race/ https://www.politifact.com/punditfa...ite-males-responsible-more-mass-shootings-an/
Yeah, we've been discussing it and all the other stuff about this attack over on the Terrorism thread. Since this wasn't a simple mass shooting, but a terrorist act. As mentioned over there, it's perfectly consistent with everything else he's said over the years, including his statements advocating a "final solution for Muslim immigration".
Muslims are the Washington Generals of mass shooters? I guess that would make White People the Harlem Globetrotters of mass shooters. Wait, that really is too soon. Sorry.
Not sure what the news was at the time you posted, but what I have been seeing consistently is that there is the shooter at the Al Noor Mosque, and two accomplices. No sure what role both accomplices played, but it seems at least one was not involved in the shooting, directly.
I didn't know much about Jacinda but her leadership today was impressive. NZ PM just now: "Our gun laws will change."— David Mack (@davidmackau) March 15, 2019 NZ PM Ardern, citing the fact that the shooter had a license for his weapons, says "that will give you an indication of why we need to change our gun laws."— David Mack (@davidmackau) March 15, 2019 NZ PM Ardern says Trump asked her during their phone call what the US can do to show support, and "my message was sympathy and love for all Muslim communities."— David Mack (@davidmackau) March 15, 2019 Asked if she agreed with Trump that white supremacy is not a problem on the rise, NZ PM Arden responds swiftly, "No."— David Mack (@davidmackau) March 15, 2019
