Reports in the French press today from a Q&A with the FFF president suggest FIFA offered France the tournament organisation for the U-17 tournament in 2020. That would be the third tournament organized in France in 4 years. I have seen no mention of bids for this tournament, I wonder if FIFA thought let's have France as a back-up for the tourney if no one else bothers ?
Well, since I spent a wonderful time in Brittany this summer for U-20 WWC, I wouldn't mind having another WWC within reach a pair years from now. I just hope this time they wouldn't accurately choose the corner of the France that is the farthest from Italy! What about Côte d'Azur?
If organized in France, they will do the same format as the U-20 tournament ie all the games in the same region with small grounds.
the lack of interest for anyone to host the U-17 & U-20 is a little glaring. As far as I know, India is the only country bidding for the 2020 U-20 WWC. Are they automatic to get it? Japan as the frontrunner for the 2023 WWC, does that make it automatic for them to host the 2022 U-20 WWC?
It won't be Brittany again... I was told recently Poland expressed interest, but I don't know if they put a bid.
I see no reason to have an U17 World Cup. It is too much --not worth the trouble. The teams can play a few smaller, four-team tourneys in Europe, Asia, and/or Latam and call it a year. A U17 WC is overkill.
We already know your point of view, @L'orange, but we don't mind: we're all U-17 WWC lovers here and we like to watch the tournament. Maybe, if you want, you could propose USA to retire their team from it. Not that they use to get very far in the tournament anyway...
FIFA were looking at merging the U-17 and U-20 tournament and make an annual U-19 event instead. It was rejected. I think it is a good tool to develop the players and learn to play against different nations.
Certainly, U17 teams can and should play other nations--I'm all for it--but you don't need a World Cup, with all that it entails, to do that. Invite three other national teams to America to play our U17; we got to South America or Asia to play three other teams. That's all you need. Nobody really cares about an U17 World Cup, and there is no real reason to care. It is FIFA overkill.
I know a lot of people who care : players, parents, staff, fans. Those U-17 are sometimes the only shot at a world cup for many girls.
How is the U17WC organized and played? Is there the traditional qualifying in different regions, over time? And then, what does the actual WC entail--a 2-week or longer tourney among TK (how many?) teams? I just think WC's generally are too big and time-consuming--and I can't imagine how teenagers who are in school have time for it all. Have the top youth soccer nations play in 2 or 3 week-long tourneys over the course of a year and you've given the kids all they need in terms of international competition, IMO.
It is the usual qualifying format with the five confederations organising the qualification as they wish. There are 16 teams for the current tournament and it will be played between the 13th of November and the 1st of December. From what I know, the France and England set-up have teachers when the U-17 to U-19 teams are on international duty at home and abroad. They have lessons and then training.
CONFIRMED: @IndianFootball will host the 2020 #U17WWC in #India 🇮🇳. pic.twitter.com/kvRMR80RMO— FIFA Women's World Cup (@FIFAWWC) March 15, 2019
I have to believe after France hosted the U-20 WWC in 2018 and now the 2019 WWC that they would have been given the U-17 2020 WWC if no one else bid for it.
Fifa are too busy fixing their VAR machine. Different reports say dates sometime between September and November 2020. The Times of India says venues in "Goa, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata and Mumbai have been shortlisted". The Indian U17 team will be somewhat 'improvised' with a short preparation time. The AIFF federation finally published its plan in late July – before that, The Hindu's excellent article summed up India's challenges: - https://sportstar.thehindu.com/maga...aiff-funding-maymol-rocky/article27139810.ece (Archived) Youth football in Kolhapur (photo: Shyam Vasudevan, The Hindu)

OK, this will be my last word on an U17 World Cup--for men or women.Yea! Of course if you dangle the idea of a "world cup" in front of any soccer player or family or staff, they will get excited. They will be the only "fans" in attendance. That's not the point. But where comes this funny idea that 16-year-olds deserve "a shot at a world cup." They're 16! It's over-reach--and clearly so. We don't have an Olympics for Under 17s so that they can have a shot at a gold medal. It's a silly idea (though clearly and sadly the Olympics in its desperate attempt to stay relevant as been moving steadily in this direction with all the ridiculous events (BMX bike racing, Frisbee golf, etc. it has added to attract young viewers.) By this logic Fifa might has well have an U14 or U12 WC as well--parents and staff and pee-wee players will get excited to have their shot at a World Cup! Or why don't we have an U17 Indianapolis 500, so that teenage go-cart drivers can "have their shot" at the most prestigious event in car racing. Silly. What's more, how many countries actually have strong, competitive U17 national teams? 10? It's the usual suspects. Beyond this, you see the problem when FIFA looks for host countries for the junior WCs: there is nobody other than the usual teams that are capable of hosting. FIFA tries to branch out and it ends up having an U20 WC in Papau New Guinea, which was an absurd location. This is the result of vainly trying to be all things to all people.
Only on-topic posts? It won't be the same. In an interview, India's tournament director Roma Khanna says they'll confirm venues soon, with a Fifa inspection at the end of November: https://www.newindianexpress.com/sp...-women-u-17-wwc-tourney-director-2052581.html
Good some people have some travel to organise. Never attended a U-17 World Cup yet while I have done many Seniors and U-20 as fan.
