Not trying to bring down the hype train or anything but Adams isn’t the sole reason why RB Leipzig are doing so well. He just so happens to join at a moment where they are inform. He’s a real special talent for sure.
Adams is the first American player I truly think would fit in well at Spain. Atletico Madrid would seem like a great fit.
My recolection is that it was a queit game for him as mostly sat deep and focused on defending until the last 20 to 30 mins. He had a really smooth play early on, but check out the last few plays of the video. He really started taking over late in the game. The kid is going to continue to grow at a rapid pace as he fully adapts to this level. I turned on his game yesterday but didnt get a chance watch more than the first 20 mins. He looked solid and very impressive how consistent/dependable he already is.
The things tha tstood out to me were his anticipation in getting to loose balls. It was almost as if the opposing players were standing still. It reminds me of that goal he scored last year when he beat Acosta to the ball. Along with that anticipation is almost a sixth sense in knowing when an opponent will make an error and where the ball will go. He also had some very nice combinations (I believe the ones you are referring to) where he played several one-twos through traffic with a teammate. teh spaces were tight but he made it look easy. He also had at least one or two nice dribbles in traffic to maintain control of the ball. Where I think he dad a bit more trouble was first touch and one touch passes (mainly balls coming in the air). Several of those passes and touches went astray. It was also important I think tha even on a day where his first touh might not have been as good as it usually is, his intelligence, workrate and other attributes are/were still enough to make him exvellent. I really like his game. I also think that with McKennie and Adams we have the makings of the type of pressing team that could really mess up Tata's attack and cause havoc.
I think Atletico wants to be the first Spanish team to get a piece of the American market. They supposedly tried to get in on Pulisic too (iirc) but were told it was too late, Chelsea already had it wrapped up. If they want to be part of a permanent “Big 3” controlling the La Liga portion of the American market would be a nice leg up.
Adams just has the combination of control and quick passing ability that a top Spanish team would require.
No, Adams is not the "sole" reason RB Leipzig is doing well ... it is a team sport after all. But the team is 5 wins and 3 draws with him playing. In the 10 games prior to him starting to play, the same squad went 3 wins, 2 draws and 5 losses. He didn't "just so happen" to join them when they were in form. They clearly weren't in form when he arrived. So it is only logically to think that he had a less than insubstantial hand in the team suddenly getting into form.
McKennie has a grip load of assists. Would not hurt to look at him at the top of the midfield triangle. I would not tie him to the back line as a 6. JMO. ------------------------------Jozy ------Puli-----------------McKennie----------Arriola -----------------Adams ------------------------------------Bedoya? Robinson -----------------Besler-------Brooks------------Yedlin
I think a number of those assists were of the header variety. Attacking wise, he seems best suited to making runs from deep positions. If he's in a double pivot he wouldn't necessarily be tied to the backline. A 442/343. PA/DN = Arriola or Nagbe.
Cool. In that 1st diagram, I mis-interpreted Wes as the stay at home guy. On his assists, i cancelled the package that gets the BL, so I don't watch Schalke matches. But, the assists I've seen (or, at least, remember) have all come from deep through balls on the counter. Granted, that's not optimal. But, it's better than anyone else who is being proposed for the top of the triangle. At this point, Wes is a better assist guy than Puli. I know, we all expect that Puli will grow into it. But, right now ...... And, Wes is good with his head. If he played the top of a triangle, maybe he could be an aerial presence in the box for us.
