The Euro league does not want the FIFA League to take away from its newly formed cash cow, From what has been posted around here UEFA does not want a Nations League at all.
If the nations league turns out to be a good concept I think it should be implemented in all confederations before we jump into a world league phase. Right now UEFA hasn't even completed their first attempt at it and only CONCACAF has firm plans to start one of their own. It's still at thought stage in the other regions. To be honest I don't really see the need for a world league, I'm happy with the world cup. I could really only see a world league working if we dropped something from the calendar, and the only things that could be dropped to make enough room are the confederation championship tournaments, and I would hate to see that happen. In AFC its only for the recently completed tournament that we got nearly all the nations into the qualifying tournament so I think establishing a nations league may have to wait for the next cycle.
I am talking about a Top-of-the-world-league between the top 16, maybe Japan get in some day, but for now that is not a problem to AFC or mexico in concacaf. Which asian is against argentina germany croatia and sweden playing home and away in a fifadate?
How do you determine the top 16 unless there is some interconfederation play? If you want to have a UEFA/CONMEBOL league that's fine, I'm sure it will be a great tournament, but it wont be a world tournament unless there is a path for nations around the world to qualify. In any case, where do you propose to fit such a tournament into the calendar? It must replace something or you need to create more international dates. Something needs to go to fit it in.
We have a fifa world ranking and you can see the top 16 of the world today. Of course we can better up level up this the next year/edition but at least we can start it. Champions leagues and the world cup started inperfecly a long time ago, then grow.
You could take the last 16 from the last World Cup but I suspect that doesn't include the "right" teams for the people suggesting this. J
I don't want another tournament that's just meant to prove that the best teams are in UEFA and CONMEBOL.
Well you better not be one of those people who say that the World Cup is going to be boring and over-saturated with bad teams then. People cannot have it both ways. Either we see the best teams out there or we don't.
I might have missed the latest information circular, but isn't the proposed World NL basically just a collection of intra-confederation nations league pools, stacked at different levels/tiers? My understanding was that it didn't interfere with the UEFA NL format or anything, other than a couple of teams from League A would qualify for the final 8 tournament that replaces the Confederations Cup.
why even bother with the world cup then. How about just a home and away between Brazil and France ? Why have any inferior teams at all. In fact why not just award the #1 FIFA ranked team the championship and not waste any of our time.
That is the gist of it. The only sticking-point I can see is commercially because UEFA would have to transfer commercial rights to FIFA or the new company - of which FIFA would have a controlling interest if reports are to be believed - which would manage it and the new Club WC.

Interesting. For the non-German speakers, apparently the time slot for the 2021 CWC is June 17 until July 4. Eight groups of three. FIFA wants twelve European clubs but UEFA only wants to send eight. If this passes I am nearly certain that China will host the first expanded edition given Alibaba’s CWC involvement. I guess the 2019 CWC will be the last edition in the current format. Who will host? Morocco (interested) or Qatar as compensation for loss of Confederations Cup?
confederations cup was pointless competition on its own but it was always a good test for the next world cup host ... but you can't hold tournament in summer in qatar!
How about that? Even UEFA aren't shameless enough to go along with having half the field in a Club "World Cup".
It's FIFA that wants more European teams, to make it as lucrative as possible. When expanding the World Cup Infantino made clear that it isn't only about CONMEBOL and UEFA. He shouldn't change his tune now and also limit UEFA to 8 slots in the CWC. A CWC with 8 groups and 8 teams from UEFA probably means there will be 1 UEFA team in each group. Only the group winners advance. It could turn into an exclusively European affair quite quickly.
Eight European clubs means no UEFA vs. UEFA in the group stage, hence the number twelve. If the reports are true I wonder what made UEFA change their mind. The prospects of elevating the profile of the Europa League?
I think an expanded club world cup is absolutely pointless. I enjoyed the confederations cup, a good appetizer for the world cup. Not enough world international competition, yet we see club competitions every year. This is a horrible move, and hopefully it is voted down.
The CWC proposal was not designed to reduce inter-continental competition even though the Confed Cup would be lost because there was the proposed Nations League world finals to offer an arguably more meaningful global competition without encroaching on the WC's status. I welcome the revamped CWC but regret the decision not to introduce NL world finals.
