Erik McCue (@ErikMccue), Houston Dynamo Homegrown CB, has been called into Sweden U19 MNT. McCue, dual national, is interested in playing for US - and CBs are a need for US U20s - but I'm hearing he hasn’t received contact from USA despite strong preseason with Dynamo first team.— J.R. Eskilson (@JREskilson) February 17, 2019
Not every dual-nat is going to play for us. If he wasn’t good enough before getting called in by the Swedish U-19’s, why should he all of a sudden get a call in to the US U-20’s?
I will say that we've called up some pretty fringe players over the last couple of U20 camps. While I think we have some really good options for the World Cup (and even some depth with guys like Keita)......................its surprising we didn't call up McCue to a "casting a wide" net camp. I mean, we had a player from Holy Cross at the last camp. McCue is an MLS homegrown centerback.
McCue is an '01. For argument's sake, lets say he was better than the CB from Holy Cross. I don't think we should start calling up every player in a younger age group who is better than a deep-depth option who won't make the U-20 WC team. If that was the case, we'd have 20-25 01's, 02's, 03's who get called into the U-20's this cycle. I don't think that sets a good precedent. Do they have a good chance to help teams that will play in the important tournaments (qualifying, WC)? That should be the considerations for calling in a player to play up a year. Also, I don't think it sets a good precedent where the NT feels like they have to promote players beyond the level they think they should be playing at because that player is a dual-national. If McCue was the caliber of someone like Araujo, its a different discussion, but it seems like USSF thinks he's not. From what I've seen, I'd agree with that. Not every dual-national is going to play for the USA. I wouldn't disagree with calling him into his own age-group. He's a good enough player, but I don't think he should be handed a spot due to his dual-nationality that he hasn't otherwise earned.
Somewhat random, but it occurred to me that '99 Joshua Burnett who was at a US U18 camp in 2016 is the same guy who was the #8 for Trinidad in U17 World Cup qualifying in 2015. So he falls under the Balogun, Edwards, McMaster, Perry group of being in US camps despite being provisionally cap-tied to another country. Burnett and Edwards both played against the US in a competitive youth match before joining up at a US camp. I don't believe any of them have filed a one-time switch to the US yet. Burnett is all but out of the USYNT picture by now, but just an interesting piece of trivia.
When I saw the match between Georgia and PDA in 2015 I was surprised with Burnett's level, at that moment I thought I could be a decent prospect, but after that I have not heard more about him.
Watches with a snicker on his face....................(I know this makes me a bad person). CONCACAF'D!!! 1098427955452305409 is not a valid tweet id
Alejandro Alcala and Donovan Palomares called up for Mexico's U15s: http://www.femexfut.org.mx/#/Noticia/20677
Letayf continues to be part of Mexico's U17s. If he's selected for this U17 CONCACAF Championships before he's got his US citizenship, this one is..................ova. That would be a shame, because I do rate this kid. Letayf and Meza called up for national team duty https://t.co/jsk95qLOA0— 3rd Degree (@3rdDegreeNet) February 27, 2019
It was a matter of time. Very good player. Not much USSF can do as he's not that close to citizenship. If Mexico took notice (and he's definitely good enough to play for their YNT's), he was a goner.
Feyenoord's Jamie Dunning, who has been part of the US U17 pool, has been called up by Canada U17s. https://canadasoccer.com/?t=project&sid=1285

Still haven't seen anything else for the Canada Dunning callup. He may have received a callup but it's unclear if he actually accepted. His IG profile is still pro-US. Haven't seen anything else about the Sweden McCue callup either.
