Real bummed to not see the likes of macmath, Rickey, and marcinkowski starting , was hoping our pool would have expanded this year

Jesse Gonzalez had a fantastic save against Efra Alvarez yesterday.

Jesse is kinda Bill Hamid-like. Capable of making the truly spectacular save...…………….but the other parts of the game can let him down. He's been notably more vocal in the back so far this season.

Luchi may force Gonzalez to work on his weaknesses. He wants even his keepers to help in possession and had them work in rondo drills early in preseason with everyone else. He is also being more vocal. Maybe he’s just growing up as leper’s usually get better later than others.

Cincinnati's keeper, younger guy who was in development with the whitecaps for awhile. He had the talent from what I remember, he was loaned out to Cincy in USL the last two years too

It'll be great to see Steffen vs Horvath in training. I wonder who gets the no.3 spot. I'd wager Johnson as it might be awkward with Hamid's recent comments. I don't figure Atlanta lets Guzan get called up.

Johnson got the no.3 spot as predicted. I do wonder if Hamid might have gotten it were it not for his comments.

Im not sure he did anything last night. His two saves werent worth making the highlights as they blew our RSL.

True that, but I just meant in relation to his cleansheets. Those plus great saves (performances) can get him that move back to DK.

Jesse Gonzalez is back with the national team. We'll likely get to see a lot of Horvath in the upcoming friendlies.

We'll see. I still havent seen him clean up the issues with his game that kept him from winning a spot in the first trip.

footwork. With many teams now wanting GKs to play out of the back. I love Bill (his return to DC United has me jumping for joy) and he is a great shot stopper but way too often he plays the ball back immediately to the other team, even when it is a relatively simple pass. My understanding is that Horvath will need to work on the same weaknesses. GB and many other coaches definitely value that, and if neither Bill nor Horvath improve in that regard, I could see Sean Johnson moving forward (possibly even starting in March).

"Personally I think it’s wide open," Horvath said of the competition for the starting USMNT goalkeeper job. "Brad (Guzan) is not here right now and right now it’s me, Sean (Johnson) and Jesse (Gonzalez). Zack is obviously in the picture and Brad’s obviously in the picture. I think it’s wide open. All we can do is come into training, and whoever plays the game, just show Gregg and the coaching staff that we are ready."

Helpful, but I think equally important is the quality of defense overall. that is GAA means very little in my opinion if the keeper is picking daisies 90% of the match. (I know the stats arent reflecting GAA, but the point remains the same.)

Cincy has a good thing going on, and its good to see Spencer holding the fort down. Its early days, he keeps this up he could have a 2020 camp cupcake appearance.

Spencer has been good enough to start in MLS for awhile now, and I reckon there are at least 3-4 others that are good enough to be starting right now too. Its kinda shocking at this point Edwards is still on the bench with DC, especially as the number three option (god what a nightmare of a trade that was.......nothing good came out of that for anyone)

Also looks like Marcinkowski is back in the oven for awhile. Vega is firmly number one for San Jose, and Tarrible is back as the number two.

Horvath gets guidance from a legend to take the next step
For Horvath, his time with Club Brugge has seen him experience the full range of the team's depth chart. He began last season as the starter and then fell out of favor due to poor form for six months, only to come back again. Even this season, he has been riding the fine edge between backup and starter. Horvath was consigned to backup duty for the first three months of the campaign before becoming the starter at the end of October. Since then, he has shown his quality, delivering a spectacular performance for the U.S. in a 1-0 loss to Italy in November.

Horvath has made his mark at the highest level as well, recording three consecutive shutouts in the UEFA Champions League against Monaco, Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid. Against Dortmund, Horvath prevented international teammate Christian Pulisic from scoring a potential winner.

"I didn't even know it was him until he told me after the game," Horvath told reporters last week. "I thought it was their striker. After the game, he came to me and said, 'Why'd you have to save that?' It happened so fast, I didn't even know it was him. It was a real special night."

Ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Chile, Horvath revealed that a conversation way back in preseason with Bayern Munich keeper Manuel Neuer helped set the stage for his bounce-back campaign. Both Club Brugge and Bayern Munich spent part of preseason in Qatar, and Horvath sought out the Bayern legend.

"That [talk] was a little bit about everything," Horvath told ESPN FC. "It wasn't just about soccer. We talked about everyday life. It was stuff to help me and what he's gone through as well to see if it would [apply] to myself."

The connection between the two keepers has continued in the months since, with Horvath sending a video to Neuer to get his feedback on things such as his positioning and how he uses his body in situations. Yet the mental aspect of the game is where Horvath thinks he made considerable progress, especially in terms of shaking off mistakes.

"I'm only 23, and I'm still at such a young age for a goalkeeper, but it's difficult," he said of navigating the occasional error. "As I've gotten older and played more [higher-level] games, if something does happen, you've just got to forget about it and move on because maybe you still have to make a save in the game, or maybe something still has to be done in the game to help your team out."

Manager Gregg Berhalter said during his news conference that Horvath would start in Tuesday's friendly against Chile. That was news to Horvath, as passed through the mixed zone on Monday, but he's ready for any eventuality.

"If I am [starting], it's a good feeling," he said. "I don't know 100 percent, but if not, I'll support the team 100 percent. It's a great opportunity."

A solid performance against Chile could see Horvath make a big impression on Berhalter, too.

"I think it's wide-open," Horvath said last week of the competition among U.S. goalkeepers. "All we can do is come into training, and whoever plays the game, just show Gregg and the coaching staff that we're ready."

Horvath did not look comfortable last night. HIs positioning was fine but he was much too tentative to come out and get the ball and did not direct the mess of a defense very well, especially Ream. It was painful sitting in the stands last night.
