Mannnnnnnnnnn, over-over-over simplification (that's all my Pea-brain can handle) but ball enters box.....put the ball on frame while defense is in disarray. Simple right??? I'll take that over trying to pull a spectacular Micheal Jorden move taking 4 seconds that allows the defense 7,8,9 to form in box.
I don't know if Alexi has ever or will ever get over the U.S. Mens non-qualifying debacle last year. It rocked him straight to his core and right down to his soul. As a former player, he is allowed. Hopefully, he has sought out and is receiving counseling. However, those truly in the know realize that Russia 2018 was merely a placeholder to remind people that the tournament of significance will occur in France 2019.
Further, I would like to remind Mr. Lalas that the UNITED STATES WOMEN..... ....OUR WOMEN, have been ranked #1 in the frickin World for the last like 243 years except for that hour and a half back in 2005. For heavens sake, the USWNT was the primary reason that the original colonists fought for our independence from England. Even then, those brave individuals realized that their daughters, daughters, daughters, >,>,>,>,>,>,>, daughters, daughters, daughters would possess a celestial level of awesomeness on the pitch. Don't necessarily believe what you have read in textbooks about taxation without representation and the tyrannical reign of King George III cr*pola.
Now you know the truth.......I would never lead you astray.

I know everyone has thrashed this team pretty good, but I just wanted to add that the most infuriating aspect of their play to me is the defensive inability to play the ball out of their zone under even modest pressing. Back and forth across the field always going backwards until their only option is to pass back to the GK for a long blast and a turnover of possession. Maybe our mids should work harder to get open, but we don't appear to have a plan and that falls on the coach.

    I'm all for replacing Ellis.

What are you basing this on? You may be correct, I am admitting I don't know what's in the new contract, but in the past players can get a coach dropped but not the other way around.

    here
That is the natural result of the formation Jill has run, the last 2 games. The midfield is a pure Amid, a wingforward, and a dmid. The *only* one showing for the ball is Ertz. I've only seen the 1st half, but it looks like England did what I said our opponents would do after the Japan game: don't let the 1st ball out of the back be to Ertz. All they had to do was have someone stand with Ertz when the back line had the ball. Eazy peazy.

Then, our options are pass it to the full backs, who are both good attacking players, but since Ertz is going to have a pal hanging out with her, they have 2 forward options: 1) pass it to our slow wingers in our defensive 3rd+, or try to dribble the ball into the attack, leaving the slow winger to cover. Neither is a great option.

And, then you get Pugh playing basically as a dual 10. Pugh is a lot of good things, but creative, incisive passer is not one of them.

And, neither Pugh nor Lavell is going to offer much in defense. And, although Pino and Tobin are willing, they're not either. Julie is on an island at d-mid.

Like I said before, this is not about Horan being hurt. This didn't work with her in the line up either. It's probably worse. She doesn't offer anything in defense. Is just an ok passer and adds to our speed deficit (when you have Pino and Tobin both on the field, you're going to have a speed deficit. Add Horan, and ....... )

The team has done well in the past with the pure talent and skill they have. Not from any coaching strengths. But now we have three problems.

    1. The talent may not be as good as before.
    2. The rest of the world has narrowed the gap (this is probably the biggest issue).
    3. We still have the same coach who now needs to actually coach instead of sending out 11 of the best players in the world and telling them to do their thing.

Exactly as you would suspect. Which is why not giving any GKs besides Naeher, and Solo before her, any game time is a humongous mistake. If Naeher had not got hurt, would Franch be making that mistake in the World Cup? What was the plan?

Franch has to know not to pick that ball up. But it had to be weird that the CB let it roll right past them. Why let a back pass go so the GK has to play it with their feet when you can play it with your feet? Usually, you let it go to let the GK pick it up. And, of course, the pass was poorly made to nobody by a winger/forward playing in central midfield for whatever reason.

The problem is that Franch demonstrated that she doesn't even have the most fundamentals of positioning down. I am discounting the picking up the back pass. Give her a pass (see what I did there....lol) for lack of playing time, heat of the moment. But her positioning on the indirect kick was terrible. I said so out loud as we were watching....she's way to far to the right and given away the far post. Boom in it goes. And my wife says well you called it.

Then she didn't come out far enough to take the angle away on the second goal. That again isn't really a heat of the moment thing. She should absolutely know where she is on the pitch relative to the goal line and he lineup with the frame.

Frankly I was embarrassed at those two plays for a keeper at this level. If she is the second best we have going into this summer then we better all pray that Naeher stays healthy.

The shot kissed off the post. You can't cover everything. For all I know, Rapinoe was supposed to take that away. Rapinoe moves inside with her run and accomplishes nothing but probably block Franch's view.

She was a little rooted in concrete on the second. But Naeher has the same positioning on a shooter in the same spot on the Japan 2nd. That player squared it to an open team mate and the English player didn't. But it is interesting that neither came out. It is preseason for both.

At least she didn't try and defend from the back of her goal like Campbell...

Ellis needs to identify a #2 and get them significant minutes in the next 6 games. She has failed on this for years.

That's it! No broadcasters for anyone! You will listen to the games in silence except for the in-stadium sound!
Still waiting for this option from any cable, satellite, or streaming service. And for you oldsters out there, I watched the NFL's "Silent Game" in 1980. I liked the coverage.

I wish that was what we actually had happen. Except that I would like to hear the names of the people on the ball and those making the passes.

Color commentary is worthless for me and it is worse when those commenting do not really know the game.

The way commentary has been handled in the EPL is one reason it has been more popular with many neutral fans. They will let long periods go without any but the minimal comments. The US chatterboxes need to realize it is NOT radio and not every second has to be filled with inane chatter.

They’ve actually tried this in other sports. In LA, Fox did some NBA and NHL broadcasts without announcers and aired them at the same time as the ones with announcers. They were pretty much ignored by the fans. Everyone wants someone talking to them. You can’t really replicate the excitement of being at the stadium so people talking to you helps pass the time between exciting plays.

The reality is most fans don’t pay attention to what’s being said 90% of the time. That’s why the broadcasters in today’s world are basically all the same people. All networks care about is having pbp guys who speak clearly and don’t offend anyone and analysts who have a big name and some ability to speak about the game. As long as they speak clearly and (more importantly) don’t offend anyone, they can have a job.

I can’t tell you how many analysts I know of who basically show up and do games with no preparation whatsoever. It seems like soccer analysts are better, mostly because it seems like players are more involved with the game after they retire than they are in other sports. But I’ve seen basketball analysts show up 45 minutes before the game (they’re supposed to be there 3-4 hours before) and then not have any idea who any of the players are.

The reason guys like Tom Verducci and Tim Kurkjian started getting work as analysts and sideline reporters in baseball is because they talk to executives and players and can offer the stories about the things going on with teams is because guys like John Kruk and Harold Reynolds basically show up, eat dinner, and talk to their friends instead of actually trying to find content for the game.

Good analysts show up early, watch practice, talk to the players and coaches, and can relate that info and tell stories about it on air. That’s pretty difficult to do in soccer since a lot of the announcers in today’s game are sitting in a studio in Los Angeles.

Personally, I prefer the Spanish broadcasts to the PL style. I like announcers to get excited at exciting times and tell me what’s going on. I don’t want to just know who the player is, I want to know something about him/her. There are so many players to follow that it’s practically impossible to know about all of them and I enjoy the human aspects of the game.

so looking at England's new lineup vs Japan; their making an incredible 8 changes. Lets see if Ellis can be brave enough to equal that as she's facing a Brazil team that lost it's last 7 games in a row

I remember when I was little, dad watched the Laker games when they were more accessible with no announcers just the players making their usual grunting sounds when they went hard in the paint. He preferred it to the chatterboxes but I guess ultimately, that didn't last too long.
