    Bradley doesnt do it well.

    Trapp doesnt play it solo.

Adams played well as a solo dmid in the bundliga within the last week.

    vaunted
    Dictionary result for vaunted
    adjective
    1. praised or boasted about, especially in an excessive way.
"they have utterly eclipsed their vaunted American rivals"
The word is appropriately used in the phrase "Bradley and Trapp's vaunted passing abilities", but no idea why all the praise and boasting. Their passing ability is not special at the international level. It is actually below average when pressured. Let's hope the GM and Head Coach hand selected selected by our great Fed understand this.

I'm half way through today's game and Adams looks great sitting in front of the back four in the Bundesliga. He does most of what Bradley and Trapp do and much better some cases. He also brings so many other aspects to his game. He is the type of player a coach creates roles for, not the two other stiffs.

First I want to say that I couldn't agree more with the bolded statement. I also think that is possibly what Berhalter was/is thinking w/respect to the hybrid rb role that has been given so much attention. (Assuming the rumors are true of course).

I seriously am confused by the reasoning that has Berhalter building around Bradley and or Trapp. I do believe that the role he had them playing is one that he hopes to implement into the style of play. He may or may not be planning to use one or both in the short term but I am betting that he will continue to search for a better alternative long term. I consider long term to be hex. (by that time, he should have major pieces in place...he can't afford to play a style betting that someone will come along and develop into that role by wc. In other words, he SHOULD have some players in mind now...either in Europe or young but not quite ready yet (or both) and if they do not pan out than he needs to change his thinking. (of course IF Trapp proves he can fill that role than great...I know I am not alone in doubting that probability).

I know the recent statement by Canouse has gotten a lot of attention and even before that, many wondered why he didn't get on the field (myself included). I don't have an answer but if I were to speculate I would say GB had 2 main priorities...evaluate talent and evaluate his system. He HAD to do both but it had to be done within the basic constraints (playing Panama B and CR B was never going to test our defense).

My impression of GB is that he is very meticulous and is the type that would study opponents to the point where he would know the opposing players in MLS as well as some of the opposing coaches. Given that, I believe he had a pretty good idea of the roles he envisioned for each of the players. The training sessions were primarily to confirm his expectations. I would expect that the players he would need to see the most were the youngest players because they would be the ones that are most likely to change the most in one year and the players he envisions in a specific role. He has seen them in opposing teams but not playing in his style. Canouse is young, but I don't believe he is as good a passer as either Trapp or Bradley and I don't know how well he grasped the system (I know Bradley was mentioned as picking it up quickly and Trapp obviously had an advantage). By having them in the team, it allowed Berhalter a chance to evaluate (to some degree given the competition) how the other attacking players could fit into their roles going forward. Bradley wasn't tested defensively and Canouse wouldn't have been either but having Bradley in allowed him to better evaluate the players in his system. I believe Canousse probably has a better chance of seeing time in the March friendlies.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Bradley or Trapp in Camp for the March Friendlies but I hope Bradley doesn't play. I wouldn't be surprised to see Trapp play also but i hope it is only part of one game.

Geez. So much hand wringing. In any event, it'll be interesting to see to how 3G builds his midfield. Surely, Adams and McKennie will be central midfield.

Adams's WS of 7.7 is 2nd among averages for starts at CM/DM. Small sample size and all but he's had a very encouraging start.

That one goal was a penalty.

I was wondering what was taking @ShaftBrewer so long. Nice game today! It is clear he is still settling in and figuring things out. I'd expect some significant improvement from this guy over the next couple of years. Props to @TheHoustonHoyaFan for seeing the potential in this kid a while back when people were debating whether he was a central midfielder or right back.

What role would you create for him? I believe Argentina has been wondering about that when it comes to Messi.

I see Tyler going to ManCity as an 8 for Guardiola for big bucks. I don't think he will be idling at the 6 for long.

The debate, imo, was over whether his ceiling was higher at right back/wingback or in central midfield. It could still be higher out wide, but he's too good in central midfield to be moved.

With the NT, he should be in a double pivot, which is what he has played in for most his career. If his passing game develops further, maybe make him an a-mid.

Yeah, that was the framework of the argument, but the devil was in the details. It wasn't as if that LARGE group of people thought he could be great at both, but thought his ceiling was just a bit higher at outside back. It was that the vast majority of that group who preferred him at outside back thought that he was only a slightly better than average central mid to begin with. Let me be clear … I had debates with people on bigsoccer as to who was the better central midfielder between he (Adams) and friggin' Sean Davis! Yes, there were people arguing that Sean Davis was more important to the Red Bulls central midfield than Adams. Although not everyone in the group went THAT far, that general type of thinking was symptomatic of the people who wanted to move Adams to right back.

People go ballistic if Adams is put at another position than the one he played at Rbulls but they quickly slot McKennie in at a spot he doesn't play for Schalke.

    I wonder why.

I wonder what people will say when Red bulls do better in CCL this year than they did last year. Of course, it will have nothing to do with Sean Davis.;)

p.s. edit: who is better, Sean Davis or Demme?

it's a bit of a paradox because McKennie makes Schalke better and he makes the USMNT worse. While it's a paradox, it isn't unusual. There are other examples of players who are good for club and bad for country and vice versa. Lletget couldn't do squat for Galaxy and was let go by West Ham but he has been lights out for the USMNT every time he has been called up. A lot of people can't handle that. Sometimes you just have to roll with the punches and cut your losses and run with your winnings without thinking too much about the "why".

With Danny Williams at the base of midfield, McKennie pitched in a dominant performance against Portugal.

Neither McKennie nor Adams have ever played for the USMNT with a competent coach. I think the jury is out on whether Pulisic has...

I do think on January 1, 2019, Berhalter planned to use Adams in the "Lima role". The only question is whether Adams has changed his mind with his play for Leipzig. It would be a sign of how flexible GB is if Adams is not played there or is played there. The easy thing would be to move him to the "Roldan Role". But he has McKennie there according to the latest statements. Then where, the "Djorde Role"? Seems a waste to have him as a forward on defense, that role seemed ticketed for Pulisic.

What is left? Leaving him at RB like he had planned or changing the player profile of the DM? Or does he play it safe and see if Adams can play like MB/WT?

I think what we did in January was the plan for the GC. But it is going to get sticky for GB if he plays arguably our best and most in form player out of position. If MB or WT or both are on the roster (possibly as the only MLS players called), we will have an answer really and Adams will be competing with Yedlin for RB or McKennie for the 8. Going to really be interesting to see the reaction if MB is playing and Adams or McKennie are sitting...

I think you got it right on the players/roles and think the key is going to be flexible Berhalter is going to be this year and even more so for the rest of the cycle.

I think the MB/WTF role will need to be tweaked slightly for TA. I also think that addition to WM and CP rotating out wide with the wings TA and WM and TA should rotate offensively.

I think things get even more interesting in a year or two when all this attacking talent starts to emerge. I'd be much more comfortable moving if guys like Mendez, Alvarez, etc show that can be a better attacking threat as an 8/10.

It's laughable you're even considering sitting MLS' leading goalscorer.

Watching Adams he always seems to make the right decisions. He's got plenty of physical tools, is technical enough to execute, but what stands out to me is how he attempts the correct play a very large percentage of the time. I don't think it is always easy to see this quality in young players, particularly because it is so difficult to know how that will translate to higher levels or how much decision making is affected by the players around them. But, he rarely seems to make the wrong decision out there at RB.

And all the debate over who should play the #6? Well, for my money, a guy who makes the right decisions back there certainly sounds like a solid choice for the player at the base of your midfield. He's both defensively very good at winning the ball and blocking space and safe on the ball with his passing. that sure sounds like a serious upgrade in the spot over what we've tried there so far. And, if we want to claim the #6 is such a key role in the US setup, then we need to be open to playing one of our best players there.

Think Pulisic would be playing wing-forward in 3G's system. Adams, McKennie, and Bradley/Trapp could then all start in central midfield. Not my preference, but I'm not picking the team.

For me, this was a bit more sloppy than usual for Adams. His touch and passes were often off...that being said, one of the things that stands out the most to me is his intelligence and anticipation. Those two things are what enable him to win more balls defensively and he seems to always put himself in the right place with movement (especially passing in traffic) to move through that traffic with little one-two combos.

He doesn’t fit the CM role for Pep. It would be more likely that he plays the 6 role as a fernandinho style is a closer fit. He’s still got a ways to go before he gets there tho.
