What I’ve heard is that the Copa America tournament will be called the Continental Cup.

Not enough big name teams or even players. Mexico will draw where ever and the US would get a decent crowd. If you were really strategic with your locations you could probably get some decent crowds by placing teams in cities with large immigrant populations from there. (Iran and S. Korea in LA etc) but there still really isn't any real juice to this particularly if it isn't on the FIFA calendar.

    Nope.
Copa America is called Copa America, and will continue being called Copa America.

The thing you don't understand here, is that Copa America is only the name of a trophy, which is the one that is given to whom happens to win the South American Championship, where champions of each edition get to carve their names at the base of the trophy. Recent crowned champions take the trophy home for a few months, time after which must be returned to the Conmebol FA that has won the most amount of editions, since the begining of the South American championships (first took place in 1915), which in this case is Uruguay (15 times champions). Recent crowned champions, only get to keep for ever, a replica of the trophy. Only special editions of the South American championship, use trophy's diferent to the original Copa America, in which case whom wins them, keep the trophy for ever and don't have to share them with anyone.

Oh, and btw, it is Conmebol's Confederation tournament, reasons why during its cellebration, international clubs around the world must release the players when national teams require them.
Invited national teams from elsewhere, don't get the same benefit, as it is not their continental tournament, and international clubs can perfectly deny them their players if they don't want to release them.

Frankly I don't see why South America has to hand over its regional competition to people outside their region. And worse if it's true they're still waiting for some of the Centenario money. I mean, fool me once, shame on you....

According to Tom Marshall ESPN Brazil is reporting that the 2020 Copa America will include The US and Mexico as well as a team from Africa and Asia. Paraguay and Uruguay would co host

Now CONCACAF will say no team from the region can participate because of FIFA and what not. That's the dance that's been going on for a while now.

Whom gets to participate as invited teams to Copa America doesn't depend on FIFA, as the tournament doesn't belong to them.
Only Conmebol decides whom gets invited.

As for most of the times, Mexico gets to be the first choice, the US the second choice and Costa Rica as the third choice when it gets to that, due to relative proximity and also because their culture and playing level is very similar to our own. The reasons of this order, is mostly because Mexico most of the times, tries their best to make it to the tournament (even sending a downgraded team, if they can't send their best team), while the US very often sorts out all type of excuses to finally reject it, which at the end means, Conmebol must invite someone else from Concacaf, to replace them. Also the reason why Costa Rica has played even more editions of the tournament, than those played by the US.

Sometimes though, for Conmebol's exclusive convenience, invitations have been given to teams from other Confeds as well, where only Japan and now Qatar, have accepted to come.

Last time CONMEBOL invited three CONCACAF teams, among those Mexico and the USA, and CONCACAF rejected the invitation, at least according to the sources in English:

    http://www.espn.com/soccer/copa-ame...te-2019-copa-america-no-north-american-squads

"However, CONMEBOL vice president Ramon Jesurun told ESPN that CONCACAF declined CONMEBOL's invitation for the United States and Mexico to participate as the Copa will be overlapping the 2019 edition of the Gold Cup."

CONMEBOL invited Japan and Qatar only. Originally there was going to be three invited teams from Asia too, to have a 16-team tournament like the Centenario (once again, according to sources in English):

    http://www.espn.com/soccer/copa-ame...ve-16-teams-for-2019-edition-hosted-by-brazil

    https://www.starsandstripesfc.com/copa-america/2018/3/16/17130484/usa-usmnt-copa-america-2019-brazil

"The report also claims that the Copa field would consist of the 10 CONMEBOL teams, 3 teams from CONCACAF, and 3 from Asia. Mexico and the USMNT are reported to be definitely in, with a 3rd team from CONCACAF joining them. The teams from Asia that are rumored to be under consideration include Australia, China, Japan, Qatar, and South Korea, of which 3 would be selected."

Once again, the reports in English were completely at odds with the ones I read in Spanish, so someone was lying from the start.

Those reports (in english), came from the time when Conmebol, was considering a 16 team Copa America for 2019, which from the start considered that both Mexico and the US were going to play in it.

Talks with the Japan and Qatar FA's started the moment a 16 team Copa America was even considered as a possibility.
Once, both Concacaf teams rejected the invitation, arguing among other issues, that the main reason was that dates for the tournament would overlap those of the Gold Cup of 2019, so there was no chance of sending their best teams to the tournament (an issue, that never meant a big deal for Mexico in the past), the possibility of a 16 team tournament, simply fell on its own weight, as it was very likely that other Concacaf teams would also reject the invitation for the same reasons.
So with that in mind, Conmebol decided to stick to a 12 team Copa America (same as before), with only 2 invited teams, this time only from Asia.

Looks like Colombia and Argentina will co-host the 2020 Copa.

Reports are that Qatar and China will be the guest teams for The Copa AMerica, so it won't involve either The US or Mexico

So will there be a 2021 Confederations Cup or not? I saw an article that says the Gold Cup playoff and ticket to the Confederations Cup is no longer in play.
