Here’s the thing tho, the gulf in money won’t be that large. The US needs them more than they need US. Without them we don’t have a quality product or close to the same star power. They’ll continue to make large amounts of money with or without us. Might they make a few million more? Yea but they also don’t want to alienate their fan base because unlike here they actually can cause upheaval and a stir in the media. Yes TV rights with us involved will mean more for them. We will likely also host the first of the tournaments but I doubt we get a lock on it like the gold cup. We aren’t dealing with minnowa here.

I think the gulf is quite big.

    1. The attendance in 2016 (46,000/game) was almost double Chile's Copa attendance, and I think more than any Copa America. That's even with high ticket prices.

    2. Most of the money in soccer tournaments is wrapped up in sponsorship and TV rights. In both those areas, the US is going to get waaaaay more money than Chile/Uruguay/Peru and other smaller SA countries, and still more than Brazil/Argentina.

    3. I think if the CA still exists, it's not going to ruffle feathers much with the fans.

Wonder how easy/difficult it's going to be for the South American, Mexican, and Central American fans to get into the USA to root for their teams, in these times.

The elephant in the room is the FIFA calendar and the associated player release at the clubs. A solo effort by the USSF will never get on the calendar so you are left with an invitational similar to the US Cup played in the 90’s.

In the expanded Copa America takes the place of the old Copa America, then FIFA would have to include it in the calendar as South America's continental competition.

With no Confederations Cup, this is made possible, because even if a CONCACAF team were to win it, it wouldn't pose any representation problems.

Also, CONCACAF would keep his already established two Continental Competitions per cycle, one as a qualifier for the second. FIFA cannot object to the competition per se, it can only object to having it as a unified competition of two separate continental confederations.

Since the new Copa America would be in direct competition with the Euro, and from the Centenario we saw it can have a significant worldwide draw, the main obstacle would become the UEFA (which has the most clout in FIFA) trying to block it on the basis of keeping the confeds separate (in reality keeping the Golden Goose for themselves and themselves only).

Perhaps, but that’s not on the table. The Copa Cordeiro is.

Why does there HAVE TO BE a Gold Cup? Is that dictated by FIFA? There certainly does not have to be anything named "Gold Cup." Some other method in tournament form could very well replace the current format.

This Concacaf/Conmebol integration proposal seems fantastic from the US perspective, the overall regional perspective and the world perspective. Especially given the fact that there are only 10 countries in Conmebol. It would rival, possibly exceed, the Euros. I think the major point is that the tournament organization is suddenly in flux and anything has suddenly become possible. The idea that the Gold Cup, such as it has been, cannot be canceled and replaced going forward, seems ridiculous to me. Cordeiro's remarks were likely were warning shots over the bow of Concacaf. Maybe the Gold Cup could continuing to exist as a second level regional tournament with pro/rel with the proposed Concacaf/Conmebol model.

Maybe Canada should concentrate on reaching the Hex first...

And also not losing to Honduras by 8...

Call it whatever you want in whatever format you like, but there has to be a continental competition equivalent to the Gold Cup.

It could even be integrated in the Copa America, as a qualifier for it, as I noted before.

Talks about being "too good" for CONCACAF is dumb talk if your aren't Mexico

Against Chile right? Than no one leaves lol.

In all seriousness, changing confederation isn't happening and ours being weak as a lot to do with the way it was ran for most of its history until now.

League of Nations is a way to address that along with the creation of CONCACAF league and perhaps a pan-carribean club league so the best teams face each other more often instead of 1 team sleeping their way into their league Championship and getting thrashed in CCL.

If the rest of the region gets stronger, it's good for everyone, including top nations that will face tougher games more often.

Canada has the infrastructure to do better not just in soccer but in many other sports. The weather makes a difference: the facilities are abandoned for months at a time. No one wants to go out there and chase a ball when the wind is 12F. It's not so much fun playing soccer in a parka.

If you want to know why we didn't do good before, you can ask the question and I'll tell you.

However, it has nothing to do with what you're saying. there are numerous indoor soccer facilities from coast to coast...same for Russia and Scandinavia or Iceland. That's not a factor

It is still a factor, since there are also numerous outdoors facilities. Effectively, the weather halves the number of them, by leaving only the indoors ones available. And we're talking about kids here, who often prefer to be outside, not going from indoors to indoors.

Scandinavia should be doing better in sports too, considering the facilities and physicality of their people. Of course, there's always the Winter Olympics.

No, I'm telling you it's not a factor. As you know, hockey is our national sport but the sport with the highest registration is soccer, not hockey. There's more Canadians playing soccer than hockey.

There are other factors and facilities isn't one of them

Been hoping for this since the copa centenario. My perfect calendar would be Gold Cup the summer after the world cup, which also acts as a qualifier for the Copa America the next summer. All semifinalists get in with the losing quarterfinalists playing off for the last two spots.

I'm not entirely sure UEFA would be that bothered. The matches would be on at different times and I'm sure they can work it out like they did in 2016 where the knockout stages don't conflict. If anything it might benefit the Euros by creating a world cup like feeling around the world. Or maybe I am just being optimistic.

Negotiations begin. They weren't going to take the first offer. A few more bags of cash ought to do it.

If CONMEBOL really doesn't want the money than...

"If the offer to Conmebol is not revived, U.S. Soccer is expected to press ahead with plans for a scaled-down tournament featuring national teams from other continents, potentially including Africa and Asia."

I doubt AFC and CAF turn it down. 6 CONCACAF + 5 from the others would be cool. Might look something like (I based this on Elo ratings and seeded it mostly accordingly):

    A:
    Mexico
    Qatar
    Nigeria
    Panama

    B:
    Iran
    Costa Rica
    Tunisia
    Jamiaca

    C:
    Senegal
    Japan
    Honduras
    Ghana

    D:
    USA
    Morocco
    S.Korea
    Australia

Would be fun and worth doing. Doesn't quite have the star power and pretty sure wouldn't be sanctioned by FIFA though.

Could also scale it down and make it a pure invitation based on what makes the most money. 4 CONCACAF (probably USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Canada), then add Japan, S.Korea, Iran, Nigeria?

I think Sid's point is that someone is lying.

    - CONMEBOL invited CONCACAF teams for the 2019 Copa America. CONCACAF refused and no team from the region could attend;

    - CONMEBOL had proposed to organize a joint Copa America but under their aegis, in one of the S. American countries, and CONCACAF had rejected the proposal citing FIFA not approving it;

    - Now CONCACAF wants to organize the same tournament CONMEBOL had tried to organize before, and the South Americans are taking the chance to pay things back: "sorry but we can't, FIFA wouldn't approve";

    - Cordeiro said the USA was ready to invest a lot of money to make the unified Copa America happen in the USA, including juicy prizes for the teams taking part; CONMEBOL says they're still waiting for the money from the Centenario.

In short, there is pettiness from both sides, since each wants to be the main organizer and within their territory, and someone is lying because CONMEBOL says they have seen no money offers from CONCACAF, further they're still waiting to close the accounts from the 2016 tournament.

Looks to me like the USSF took the initiative ahead of CONCACAF that issued a reactive statement.

FIFA was unlikely to back a USSF tournament initiative with CONMEBOL without CONCACAF being at the heart of it...running concurrently with the Euro.

With no FIFA sanctioning, the USSF could organize whatever tournament they want, clubs won't release their top players.

FIFA has already approved Copa America 2020, and will be included in the official calendar at the same dates as of the Eurocup 2020.
For the next Copa's America and after, will always be staged every 4 years in even years (same years, same dates as of the Eurocup ).

Copa America 2019, staged in Brazil, will be the last tournament staged in odd years after the WC.

    https://en.onefootball.com/copa-america-to-take-place-in-2020-as-part-of-conmebol-switch/

In summary, while Copa America 2020 in the same dates as of the Eurocup 2020 is a reality, the intercontinental tournament to take place in 2020 proposed by the USSF, with no dates set yet, is only a dream project of a tournament (no FIFA approval yet).

Till now, it seems that Conmebol officials are not willing to have Copa America 2020 staged in any country diferent to the one of a Conmebol member. Till now, most likely will take place in Argentina. As up to now, there is still no certainty if it will be played with 12 or 16 teams in it.
