On @TheAthleticSCCR, I've got an eye-opening look @ a handful of kit concepts #DCU batted around before settling on their new, all-white kits. They include a "cat in the hat" homage, a "monument" look & this lovely cherry blossom number. I did not anticipate being so angry about the kit because i havent bought one in years (hate leidos sponsorship...but love the design of our 2018 black primaries) That article has me scratching my head and blood is beginning to boil. Before seeing those three mock-ups I genuinely thought DCU no longer had anyone capable of designing a great alternate (colorful with knods to local history or past iconic looks) I'm stunned The cherry blossom kit, in particular, makes so much sense i can't believe a DCU staffer was thoughtful enough to propose it. Hard to believe that they nixed all these unique ideas in favor of what we have now
Pablo's article is interesting. Essentially the FO picked the second worst of the four under consideration. The "Strength" uniform looked like the player had a skin rash on his arms, or else a bunch of color bled in the wash. The "Unity" and "Tradition" models probably would have made me part with my money. The current away uni I can get at Target 3 for $9.99.
They set the bar so low that I honestly wonder: will Loudoun United kits be better than DC's this year? That would be pretty sad
I generally get the secondary shirt as a long sleeve shirt. I was going to make do without the long sleeve since apparently MLS is nixing them, but I was still looking forward to the secondary. This will be the first time in a long time that I won't buy a shit and that's exclusively on the team.
So I am generally a consumer. I don't want to get into what I spent the last few years in the team store up until this past season when I was mostly on a boycott, but its a substantial number. There aren't too many jerseys the last few years I don't have, at least the home shirt. The previous away shirt was hideous, but my son has one with Birnbaum on the back. This current shirt, no one is going to buy. They'll be sent to some Central American team in lieu of LA Rams Super Bowl Champions Ts. Had they gone with the more pink forward designs, my wife prolly would have even bought one, which would be her first. I know the Tradition shirt was never going to be our 2nd, its too close to black and I don't think we'd wear it at home regularly. I could see it being a 3rd shirt worn 2-3 times a year, but thats it. Its a 3rd shirt at best.
I would have loved to wear the cherry blossom shirt and know I would have bought for several people before I even got to the pink and green in my family.
He's been training with Man Utd for a month or so before that. Hard to tell with him though. I know a lot of people don't like him, but I hope he can stay healthy. Hed be a quality addition to an MLS side. Even us.
I'd rather he played for Italy because he wanted to than played for the US because he felt like he had to. He must have known he was limiting his caps by doing so. I was ticked off at the time, but there's been too much water under this particular burnt bridge for me to care anymore.
Agreed. But he learned the game here. I'm foremost a USMNT fan above all else. I know that goes against the grain of most on this board. Reflects the age I grew up in perhaps (yes I am a q-tip now). To me Rossi (or his ilk) are US citizens but will never be US soccer players. My prejudice.
I know others see it as water under the bridge, but he chose to leave and for that reason alone, its a sore subject for me. I'd imagine its like this for most dual nationals who choose to leave their birth country. I know its like this right now for Declan Rice choosing England over Ireland. While I understand his choice, at the same time he'd have been one of the best US players ever and who knows if he'd have stayed healthy. A judas if you will. At the same time Steve Beitashour plays for Iran and it doesn't necessarily bother me because he'd have never been one of our best, so there's a bit of a double standard there and perhaps a pass because of that.
There was a twitter thread getting passed around where they talk about the lead time into these designs, and I'd known it was a long run in because of discussions I'd had with my rep. But if you go back 2 years from today, DCU was pretty much at its near peak dysfunction. It was pre or early season 2017, they were all focused on the ground breaking or early phases of construction at Buzzard Point and how they were going court the premium STMs. And even today, I'd wager that DCU has one of the smaller back office rganizations in MLS. Thats said, it was shameful that no one thought about how many shirts they'd sell. I am sure this white kit will number in dozens, certainly not hundreds or thousands. At least at full price. I don't think we'd have seen the Tradition kit, the blue is too close to the black that we'd be switching away from. It would be a 3rd for us. I can only think of Seattle a couple years ago having 3 kits (green/white/blue). I am sure there are others. My son and I would surely own it. The marbleized kit is ok. I'd probably just buy it for my son. The cherry blossom kits would have been must have for my son & daughter and if they'd done one of the pinks, even my wife would have gotten one. I might have too. Thats a couple of authentics for the wife and I and replicas for the kids. Thats not a trivial purchase from just one STM family.
Excellent post and points. My wife was a soccer/footy hater until last season when I convinced her to come to a match now that DCU had a shiny new stadium to watch from. It only took one match for her to fall in love with it. We can only afford season tix to one sports franchise per year. We stopped buying/going to the Nats and she wanted full season tix to DCU. She enjoyed watching that much. That said... she really liked the Cherry Blossom kits- and was disappointed upon learning they turned that down for the plain 'safe' white kit. I agree it really appears to be a missed opportunity by DCU... but it sounds like it did occur at the height of their disfunction, prior to construction of AF.

Hmmmmm. Only two teams have given up more goals in the Championship this season. Don’t know anything about this guy, but Bolton is a terrible team.
