About time. The gold cup is a waste of time. An expanded Copa which isn’t held in the US every year will be far more beneficial to the program. The money grab was getting old.

Sounds like the beginning of a massive restructure to the international game for the US and probably all of the Americas. I guess that really started with League of Nations, but this change has much more significance in terms of our progress in the sport on the global stage. The build up to 2026 is going to bring a dramatic change to the game here.

Can you imagine if Wynalda were guiding the ship for this? Hope?

It was superfluous, especially with the inception of the Nations League. Even before I was ambivalent about Gold Cups. Definitely didn't need two.

You could say the same thing about worldwide tournaments. Didn't require an extra one, especially just a year before as a dress rehearsal, whatever that meant in this context.

Always was all for a combined Copa America halfway between WC's, provided it wasn't redundant too and the consolation competition like last cycle.

This was probably a reaction to all the money the US lost missing the Confederations' Cup however. Copa America would be guaranteed cash. The team doesn't actually have to be good this way.

I don't want to get rid of the Gold Cup. But I do not care for having 2 Gold Cups per cycle. I understood the reason for it - it gives smaller nations more competitive games and it makes money for the federation.

But with the CONCACAF Nations League being created, there will be plenty of competitive games for all nations in CONCACAF, making the second Gold Cup redundant from a competitive standpoint.

And from a financial standpoint, the Copa America Centenario proved we can make way more money with combined 16 team Copas than the qualification year Gold Cup ever made. And for the squads that do qualify, a regular combined Copa would be far better competitively.

So that's my hope - nix the 2nd Gold Cup, have a regular combined Copa. We get to keep our regional competition, while also having a really cool tournament every 4 years. We make more money, and everyone still gets plenty of competitive games. Really no downside. Probably the only thing holding it up is negotiating the money side of things with CONMEBOL.

You worry about your own fed. And rooting for Mexico....

What did Cordeiro say that is so embarrassing, and how is he incompetent?

he's stated numerous things that show that he's incompetent since he was elected.

as for now, so you think him saying Gold Cup could be done in 2021 only to be debunked the next day by concacaf isn't embarrassing for the President of a federation?

He said that it might not go on past 2021. Big deal. Hopefully he is correct as that would certainly be in the best interest of US Soccer, if not the best interest of CONCACAF. We need to be looking past CONCACAF at what possibilities there are with CONMEBOL. If you think that shows incompetence, I think we disagree on what is best for US Soccer.

it's not correct concacaf confirmed 2023 and beyond.....

CONCACAF has long stated that it needed to hold the Gold Cup every two years in order to fund other programs such as youth tournaments. On Tuesday, CONCACAF released a statement saying that it intends to continue with that approach.

"Following recent media reports, CONCACAF clarifies that it is fully committed to the CONCACAF Gold Cup and confirms that the 2019, 2021 and 2023 editions are part of the FIFA calendar," the statement read. "Additionally, once the new FIFA calendar is produced after 2023, CONCACAF will continue organizing the pinnacle event of our confederation."

doesn't sound like the best interest of the federation.

Playing a regular tournament with CONMEBOL would carry much more significance for US Soccer. The money can be worked out. Hopefully Cordeiro is right.

Copa America has nothing to do with Gold Cup. Most of the talk was that CONMEBOL is going to have the Copa align with UEFA Euro so 2020, 2024 etc. That's not the same year as the Gold Cup which are on odd years such as 2021, 2023, 2025 etc.

so time wise they don't affect each other anyways.

I don't have a strong opinion either way regarding the Gold Cup. Having an extra tournament a year before The World Cup can carry some value towards giving fringe players a chance to get looks and earn their way into the team. I understand that having 2 within the same cycle is a bit odd, but I think it's pretty easy to understand that one is more valuable than the other and I'm okay with that.

If The Copa America wants to move to the same year as The Euros and include CONCACAF teams, then that's cool with me

It is certainly embarrassing for your Federation President, who doesn't speak much, to say something that was completely wrong. If anyone should know that the tournament is on the FIFA calendar in 2023, it is him.

Maybe this is all some power play and he is threatening CONCACAF, but even that is embarrassing in that he did it so poorly.

I'd support eliminating the Gold Cup. Even hardcore US soccer fans don't care much that we're the defending champion, so why should anyone else pay the slightest attention to it?

The new Nations League top level looks like a better tournament in every way:

-Stronger competition in the group stages
    - Home and home format instead of the bush league (and unfair) system of having the US host everything.
    - A chance for other Concacaf countries to see their teams at home in competitive, non-WCQ matches - and as a result, presumably better atmosphere at games.
    -Promotion and relegation

If there was some way to use the Nations League as regional qualification for a combined CONCACAF/CONMEBOL tournament held every four years, that would be ideal.

Or an extra tournament the year after the WC to give managers' the opportunity to review their failure/success and get new, younger players started early in international game.

Honestly, I like the Gold Cup for the sake of introducing those fringe Euros... But if we could sacrifice that for the Americas tournament in that off even year from the World Cup.

    Group A
    USA
    Uruguay
    Ecuador
    Canada

    Group B
    Argentina
    Chile
    Bolivia
    Jamaica

    Group C
    Mexico
    Colombia
    Peru
    Honduras

    Group D
    Brazil
    Paraguay
    Venezuela
    Costa Rica

...that’s a pretty damn good tournament.

There has to be a Gold Cup. All continental confederation have one (or two, for Africa) regional tournaments per cycle.

Ideally they get rid of the second Gold Cup and replace it with a Copa America like the Centenario one, that made boatloads of money and had excellent soccer on display.

    The mouth waters.

This is my preferred outcome as well. One rotating Gold Cup (or at least only playing one group in the US if CONCACAF insists) + Nations League + Copa America+ World Cup Qualifying should give us a pretty full cup.

With the Confed Cup seemingly going away there really is minimal reason to have a second Gold Cup since both the reasoning that was always partially based on games for small nations at some level which is now gone along with the added "importance" of qualifying for the Confed. Let CAF continue to run 2 championships per cycle, but we should join the rest of the world and move to one.

"Stupid" Cordeiro has already won by getting people talking about it. There was zero cost to him to make the statement, so even if it's a longshot to actually happen he comes out ahead. Easy.

Honestly the double Gold Cup's always struck me as something only some half-<censored> corrupt confederation would come up with, hence we get multiple Cup of Nations tournaments and multiple Gold Cups, and every other Confederation has 1 per cycle. Maybe there are other reasons (there are a ton of minnow nations in both confederations after all), but it just always seemed a bit embarrassing and pointless. I'd be ecstatic if they dumped the whole thing and just merged, perhaps that doesn't happen for another five or six years, but it would do the powers in the region a lot of good to be able to measure ourselves against CONMEBOL, even if only Mexico and the US are really situated to be able to potentially compete consistently outside of golden generations (I am curious if Canada ever catches up, but that's probably a stretch even w/them potentially developing a potential star player in Davies).

The issue for me is that if we don't get rid of the Gold Cup, a second Copa America will always be a lesser tournament then the legit one that will take place this summer and again in 2023. I see mentions of the Copa America being moved to match the Euro Championship cycle, that would make it work, but how will CONMEBOL be able to handle qualification scheduling if they do that, in the past their qualification campaign has been a long and arduous multi-year campaign, what with 16 total games played by every single side.
