The reason River played more matches is because often times the Torneo Nacional was a knock out tournament, with River normally reaching the latter stages and boca being eliminated in the group stage. So... I don't really know why you're so proud of that fact.
Well, also River is a bit older which led to them playing 5-6 years in the Primera division before Boca got started. Not sure how many matches they played per season back then but that could account for 100 to 120 more games roughly speaking. OTOH, this was partly offset from River missing 38 Primera games due to being relegated recently.
Yeah, I guess Tigre are headed for Primera "B". Seven matches left, 10 points behind - could be more after tonight.
Late comeback for Defensa y Justicia last night means there is a tie at the top of the table. Here are the league positions of the top 2's remaining opponents. Racing with a easier schedule on paper as they play a lower ranked team every remaining week except this weekend. Although they do have to play Independiente: Racing: ........................10, 8 (CAI), 16, 18, 25, 19, DyJ Defensa y Justicia: .... 21, 3 (Boca), 9, 14, 23 ,11, Racing
Would be cool to see DyJ pull it off. Well, besides Boca somehow closing a 10 point gap of course, lol.
Yeah, 10 points might be possible if chasing one team. But chasing 2 teams is impossible! Priority for Boca has to be finishing top 4 since 5th place is only 1 point away.
It’s certainly not impossible, especially considering how Boca has a pending suspended game. They could cut the difference to 7 points by winning that game, and after that there are another 7 games left. Racing and Defensa still have to face each other too, so there will be some lost points there as well. The difference can now be potentially 5 points. After that Racing has to play the clasico vs Independiente, and also a few tough road games — more potential lost points. As for Defensa, they’ve been winning the last several games in the last minute, and you can’t rely on that luck forever. Plus, they still have to play Boca, another chance for the bosteros to cut the difference. Then on top of all this you have to consider how both Racing and DyJ will begin playing the Sudamericana this week, so then that might make them lose a few other points in the long run (especially in Defensa’s case, due to a more limited squad). I wouldn’t necessarily count on Boca to win the title, but it’d be far from a miracle if they did. Racing showed their weaknesses on Sunday and DyJ —while putting on a fantastic campaign— aren’t Barcelona. Points will be dropped in the long run, and as Boca showed us with their 2006 chokejob, a comfortable point cushion doesn’t always guarantee a title at the end of the season.
Good news,we get more football next season: https://www.tycsports.com/nota/superliga/2019/02/21/vuelven-los-torneos-cortos.html
More games sounds good to me, but I don’t know about the whole dividing the league into two groups thing
Next season there will be 24 teams in 1st division. Playing a season of 46 games or two short championships of 23 is just not possible (a year is 52 weeks long, the players need at least one month of vacation + all the international tournaments and continental club competitions). We need some transition format until we get to 22 teams, then it will be possible to play a full home and away round-robin league year (whole or split in two short tournaments, whatever).
In first part of season will be championships with 24 teams, with 23 games. In the second part of season (in first part of 2020.) will be play in two groups.
Could do something similar to the Scottish league - start with 23 games, then top 12 teams go to the championship group while bottom 12 go to a relegation group. Then everyone plays 11 more matches, one against each in your group. Your records from the first phase carry over.. So 34 games total. Everyone competing for the title will have played the same exact teams, so it's pretty fair. 4 teams in the other group get relegated. They would have to dispense with the 3-year averages for relegation. Either that or use the 3 year system but only the 12 teams in the relegation group are eligible to get relegated.
A few years back, under Vasco, they did the impossible. A lot of things will need to go accordingly for it to happen again. They'll need to continue to win and have SMSJ and Patronato to lose. Unfortunately, the last two matches are v Racing and River. Not to mention, they have Unión and Talleres coming up, who both have something to play for themselves.
I guess the hope is that Racing have at least a 7 point lead by the time Tigre play them. Then it might not be so difficult to get a win in round 24. River have 2 difficult Copa Libertadores matches before and after their match with Tigre. So that match could also be winnable.
Almiron has to be up there among the most overrated coaches in the modern game Granted he won a title with Lanus, that team was already built and oiled up well before he took over. His move to Atletico Nacional coincided with the Colombian sides' slow detriment (even though they couldn't stop winning before he took over), and in Independiente they booted him like a rat. Now he has filled up San Lorenzo with a thousand useless muertos that he requested in the last transfer window and has yet to win in 11 games played, on top of being dead last in the league. Obviously the guy can't perform miracles, but he is beyond average as a coach... yet somehow he is often considered one of the "top managers" by the media and was even one of Tapia's main candidates for the NT role before they decided to extend Scaloni's stay.
I'm hoping Racing maintains at the very most a 3 point lead over Defensa y Justicia (as they have now) until the last round of play. Guess what the final game of the season is? Yup....
Well so much for that... If Patronato had been defeated by D y J, Patronato, Tigre, Belgrano and SMSJ would’ve all been tied.
So Patronato lost today, ensuring the relegation battle will come down to the final weekend. In fact, 3 teams will get relegated next weekend.
Congrats to Blanquiceleste S.A. for their Primera championship win! Not going to lie -- it's not the most memorable team, but they had their peaks in Licha Lopez, Saravia, Marcelo Diaz, Zaracho. Cvitanich and Pol Fernandez proved to be useful acquisitions as well. So who wants to take bets over how long it's going to take Ra-sin Club to win another title? 10-15 years? Another 45? Just messing with you, @RacingGirl @Sandinista .... kind of
